Q What’s the latest on one of my favorites, musician Steve Miller?—Alan Goodwin, St. Louis, Mo.

The singer-songwriter-guitarist, 66, is jazzed about Bingo!, his first CD in 17 years. The songs echo Milwaukee-born Miller’s days as an apprentice on the Chicago blues scene between 1964 and 1966. “It’s a really inspi-rational and serious project,” says Miller, famed for the pop-rock hits “The Joker,” “Take the Money and Run,” “Rock’n Me,” “Fly Like an Eagle” and “Abracadabra.” The godson of electric guitar pioneer Les Paul con-tinues to tour with his Steve Miller Band and will appear this summer with Kenny Chesney on a new TV episode of CMT Crossroads.

Q Please share some background on Jeremy Wade of River Monsters on Animal Planet.—K.L. Jenkins, Middletown, Md.

Biologist and “extreme angler” Wade was born in the United Kingdom, and he has a zoology degree and a post-grad teach-ing certificate in biological sciences. He’s been traveling to the world’s most remote rivers for more than 25 years, and he’s the co-author of the fish-ing classic Somewhere Down the Crazy River. He has worked as a motorcycle dispatch rider, art tutor, language translator, public relations consultant, dishwasher and advertis-ing copywriter. “I don’t see myself as a particularly expert angler,” he says. “But what I am able to do is get into the kinds of places where outsid-ers don’t normally go, with enough energy left to put a line in the water.”

Q I saw the last episode of Ugly Betty and want to know why the show ended.—Kimberly Winorne, Murfreesboro, N.C.

Like a lot of television shows, the Emmy-winning ABC-TV series fell victim to declining viewership as the “new” wore off its shine. Fewer people watching means fewer advertisers paying for the exposure, and the network pulled the plug after four seasons. While fans mourn the show’s demise, they can rejoice that the series did launch into stardom actress America Ferrera, who appeared in all 85 episodes as the “ugly duckling” title character.

Cat Tale

Story by Marti Attoun, contributing editor

As part of our ongoing anniversary celebration, we’re updating some of our most memorable stories. In 2004, American Profile introduced you to Dewey Readmore Books, a library cat whose fame continues to grow.

THE STORY of Dewey Readmore Books, the orphaned cat who for 19 years charmed his way into the hearts and laps of patrons at the Spen-cer (Iowa) Public Library, may have more than nine lives.

Since Dewey’s heartwarming tale appeared in American Profile in 2004, the late library cat has gained international fame in two best-selling books, and his story is destined for a Hollywood movie.

“It’s been a wild ride, thanks to Dewey,” says Vicki Myron, 62, the former head librarian who found the whimpering, nearly frozen kit-ten in the library’s book drop in January 1988.

While Dewey died in Myron’s arms in 2006, the story lives on of how the beloved cat brought hope and joy to the economically depressed farming community and Myron as she battled personal and medical problems.

Dewey inspired the 2008 No. 1 New York Times’ best-seller Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World, and the 2009 chil-dren’s picture book Dewey: There’s a Cat in the Library! catapulted to No. 2 on The New York Times’ best-seller list.

Dewey the Library Cat: A True Story was published in May, and two other Dewey-themed books are scheduled for October release. Film rights to Dewey’s story were sold to New Line Cinema, with Meryl Streep cast as Myron.

“I get tons and tons of fan mail from around the world, some addressed to ‘Vicki Myron, Dewey’s Mom, Iowa USA,’” Myron says. “I not only hear from cat fans, but from single mothers, cancer survivors and people who’d given up on life.”

Hundreds of fans today make pilgrimages to the Spencer Public Library to admire a bronze statue of Dewey and to walk in his paw prints.

“They want to see the book drop and where he ate and slept,” Myron says. “It’s incredible. Dewey touched so many lives.” ★

Vicki Myron developed the touching story of a beloved library cat in Spencer, Iowa, into a couple of best-selling books and a forthcoming Hollywood movie.

ENCOURAGING your child to read can open up new and exciting worlds and lay the foundation for a lifetime of learning. You can start at any age. Here’s how:

• Talk with your children. “Talking provides the foundation for learning to and loving to read,” says Cindy Hoising-ton, an early childhood educator with the nonprofit Education Development Center in Newton, Mass. Talking about everything and anything that you see and do helps children build vocabulary and language skills.

• Be a reading role model. Make reading material accessible, and let kids see you enjoy reading. “You can’t sit in front of a TV and tell your kid to read,” Hoisington says.

• Read to your child for 10 to 15 minutes a day.

• Let them choose what they want to read. “In school, kids get assigned reading, so let them choose their own reading material at home,” says Francie Alexander, chief academic officer at Scholastic Education in New York City.

• Start a family book club. “Suggest books you loved when you were young-er, and your children can choose books about things they love when it is their turn to choose,” Alexander says.

• Hook them on a series. A book series can keep children engaged and engrossed. They are available for every age group.

• Reward your child with reading time. Some kids will do anything to stay up a few minutes longer at night.

• Try technology. “Kids are attracted to technology, so use technology to get them to read more,” Alexander says. Many books, authors and publishers offer online activities such as games involving the main characters or ways to connect with other fans. ★

Cookies: 1/2 cup sugar 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 32 wonton wrappers 4 tablespoons butter, meltedSundaes: 1 ripe fresh pineapple 5 cups water 1/2 cup honey 4 rose hips tea bags or 3 tablespoons dried rose hips 1 cup vanilla frozen yogurt 1. Preheat oven to 400F. 2. To prepare cookies, combine sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl. 3. Separate wonton wrappers and place on baking sheets, about 1/2 inch apart. Using a pastry brush, brush lightly with melted butter. Sprinkle evenly with cinnamon-sugar. Bake 5 to 7 minutes, until crisp and golden. Be careful not to overbake. Cool on a wire rack. Keep tightly covered in an airtight container. 4. To prepare sundaes, remove skin from pineapple, making sure to remove all the “eyes” (the little dark brown spots). Cut pineapple, crosswise, into eight thick rounds. Remove core with a small knife. 5. Place pineapple in a large skillet. Add water and honey. Bring to a boil. “My father was the greatest person I’ve ever known,” says Dale Jr., 35, whose dad was killed in a last-lap crash in the 2001 Daytona 500—a race in which Dale Jr. finished second.

“He wasn’t just a great race car driver, he was a great man. I learned a lot from him, and I miss him,” he says. “There’s not a day goes by that I don’t think about him.”

The senior Earnhardt was a seven-time NASCAR champion, termed by fellow Hall of Famer Junior John-son as “the greatest stock car driver I ever saw.”

History comes backAs this year’s Father’s Day approached, Dale Jr.

unveiled his plans for a unique tribute to his dad: He’ll drive a car emblazoned with Dale Sr.’s iconic No. 3 in a Nationwide Series race at Daytona Beach, Fla., in July. The car also will feature the Wrangler paint scheme made famous during three of the senior Earnhardt’s national championship seasons.

“I love the retro and the nostalgia,” Dale Jr. says. “I like going back in time or bringing the past forward. I’m not too much into the emotional part of it. I just enjoy seeing history come back and compete, albeit it in a different form.”

Dale Jr.’s sister, Kelley, is vice president/general manager of JR Motorsports, the NASCAR team he co-owns with racing veteran Rick Hendrick. She says Dale Jr. driving with their dad’s number, which required a number of cross-promotional alliances to pull off, is “a great way to honor our father.”

Special moments with dadDale Jr. and Kelley, who have a half-brother, Kerry, and a half-

sister, Taylor Nicole, have many fond memories of their dad. “Winning with him at the track was always fun,” Dale Jr.

DALE EARNHARDT JR., voted NASCAR’s most popular driver for seven consecutive seasons, enjoyed a special relationship with his racinglegend father and took away lessons that extended far beyond the racetrack.

says. “Having him show up at my Victory Lane celebrations was the best feeling, particularly after winning the All-Star race in 2000.”

Kelley says some of the best times were simple ones.

“When we were growing up, my dad was always traveling and we didn’t have a ‘normal’ family rou-tine where he’d come home every evening and we’d all sit down for dinner and talk about how our day went,” she says.

“Sometimes we’d take trips together to the farm, not talking about anything in particular. Those times were few, however, and I suppose that’s what makes them so special. Little private moments that most families take for granted were special for us because we didn’t get to enjoy many of them.”

Because their father was busy and always on the go didn’t mean he didn’t take an interest in his growing brood.

“He spent as much time with us as he could,” Kelley says. “We always knew he cared about us and was there for us when we needed him.”

“He had a piece of land that he spent all his free time on,” Dale Jr. recalls. “Going out there with him and listening to him discuss his future plans was always interesting. He had tremen-dous common sense, and his plans were always well thought out, really clever.”

Dale Jr. says his father “gave me pretty much the stuff you would expect” in terms of paren-tal advice: “School was important. Who you hung out with was important. Stay away from bad influences. Don’t drink or do drugs.”

‘It gives me chills’A lifelong bachelor, Dale Jr. says the spirit of

his father is with him at all times, and he means it literally. In July 2004, he was involved in a hard crash while practicing for an American LeMans Series race in Sonoma, Calif. The car

exploded into flames and a dazed Dale Jr. was trapped inside for 14 horrendous seconds before pulling himself out.

Later, in a 60 Minutes interview, he said his father “had a lot to do with me getting out of that car. I don’t know how else to put it. I swear somebody had me underneath my arms carrying me out of the car. It gives me chills.”

Having lost his father so suddenly makes Dale Jr. appreciate the fragile nature of life and relationships.

“I try to make people aware of the importance of being around your family as much as possible,” he says. “It’s so easy to take for granted. I know I did, and it’s a big regret of mine. I try to help my friends understand to take the time they have and use it wisely. I feel lucky for the time I had with my dad.”

Dale Jr., like his father, remains true to his roots, living in the same Kannapolis, N.C., area in which he was born and raised.

“My father was very down to earth,” he says. “He liked to hunt and fish and work on his farm. He was a big-time celebrity but he never forgot

where he came from. I think that was a big part of his appeal and I try to follow his example.”

Dale Jr. and Kelley agree that the rough, tough racer known as “The Intimidator” had another side.

“He was compassionate and he genuinely cared about people,” Kelley says. “He did a lot of things for people that the public never knew about. He taught us to always do right by people. He was a neat person to look up to.”

“He was a good man and a good father,” Dale Jr. adds. “As I was growing up, I was always aware of what a special person he was and how he was admired by so many fans. I was so proud of him, proud to be his son and proud to carry his name. I despair that the sport will never see another man like he was.” ★

FOUR GENERATIONS of Americans have painted their houses, picked apples and retrieved wayward badminton birdies from rooftops with a boost from Michigan Ladder Co. in Ypsilanti (pop. 22,362).

“We still make wooden ladders one at a time, in the same building” as a century ago, says owner Tom Harrison, 44, about America’s oldest ladder manufacturer, founded in 1901.

To help get the company off the ground, Ypsilanti officials agreed to provide land if owners Melvin Lewis, A.G. Huston and Edgar Geer invested $3,000 of their own money and employed at least 10 men, thus creating local jobs.

From the beginning, Michigan Ladder Co. proved to be a step ahead of its competition. In 1903, The Ypsilantian reported that the company had 13 employees and a “rushing business, having orders for ladders several weeks ahead.” A year later, Lewis patented an automatic safety lock for extension ladders, and by 1907 the company employed 35 men in the factory, and six salesmen who took orders across the Midwest and eastern United States.

Through the years, Michigan Ladder has built a variety of ladders for homeowners, fruit farmers and industrial workers, including tapered orchard ladders for maneuvering between limbs and heavy-duty ladders for the automobile, aircraft and construction industries. In a 1909 photo, 18 employees with a combined weight of 2,810 pounds perch on one of the company’s industrial stepladders to demonstrate its strength.

“Ladders are about as old economy as you can get, but they’re still needed for manufacturing and industry,” says Harrison, whose wife, Gina, 42, and mother, Marcia, 72, volunteer in the office, and daughter Claire, 20, works part time for the company.

Today, 16 employees produce 50,000 wooden ladders each year in the company’s original factory, which has been enlarged 25 times. Electric-ity long ago replaced a steam engine that powered the company’s early machines, and stacks of hemlock and Southern yellow pine arrive today via truck, instead of by horse-drawn wagon or railroad, but little about the lad-der’s design or manufacturing process has changed.

Each ladder is individually built, beginning with employee Scott Bruneau, 54, who inspects each piece of wood for defects, a job that he’s performed for 33 years. “Where else can you go to work and feel that you’re making a difference in a product?” Bruneau asks. “Our wooden ladders last.”

Nearby, other workers cut and shape rungs, bore holes in the upright side rails and assemble the pieces into wooden stepladders, straight ladders and extension ladders.

Melvin Carter, 59, who has worked for Michi-gan Ladder for 37 years, can put together a ladder in four minutes and has assembled up to 150 in a day. “Once you get the technique down, you can do it pretty fast,” Carter says.

Ownership of Michigan Ladder has changed four times. Harrison bought the company in 2004 from Bob Nissly, 72, whose father Arthur acquired the business in 1933 from Lewis, one of the original owners.

In addition to its wooden ladders, Michigan Ladder annually sells and distributes 100,000 aluminum and fiberglass models made in Canada, China and Mexico. “Wood is still popular, primarily because it doesn’t conduct electricity,” Nissly says.

The company’s wooden ladders have proved their worth on Dean Johnson’s 500-acre fruit farm in Traverse City, Mich. (pop. 14,532). In his barn are dozens of ladders, including some Michigan-made models more than 50 years old and handed down through four generations.

“I remember many winters, my dad would have me paint them,” recalls Johnson, 59. “Every farmer had a different color, so we wouldn’t get mixed up. Now we pick cherries by machine, but we still use the ladders for picking apples.”

Built for 109 years by Michigan Ladder Co., wooden ladders are humble, yet essential equipment around the home, orchard and construction site. “There’s not much to a ladder, but a man’s got to climb,” Nissly says. “The first man probably built a ladder to his cave.” ★Visit www.michiganladder.com for more information.

Near perfect Scratch-N-Dent Armored Safes that sell new for up to $872 are now being given away free to the first 2,080 readers who call to beat the order deadline to get the safes valuable contents

Surplus armored safes set for massive free public giveaway

RED-TAGGED FOR FREE RELEASE: Before any safe leaves the massive vaults of the World Reserve they

are rigorously inspected. Safes that don’t make the cut because of minor dings or scrapes are RED-TAGGED.

Now, for the first time ever, RED-TAGGED safes are being given away for free. So if you think you couldn’t

afford a safe before, then now is the time to get in on this before they’re gone. Because only the first 2,080

readers who call the Special Surplus Freight Hotline at 1-888-752-7124 to beat the order deadline to claim the

safes contents of valuable U.S. Gov’t issued coins and currency will actually get these heavy-duty Armored

Safes absolutely free.

UMS --- Today, for the first time ever Scratch-N-Dent Armored Safes, loaded with U.S. coins and currency are actually being given away free to the general public.

The only thing today’s readers need to do to get their free safe is to beat the order deadline to get the hoard of 221 brilliant, never-circulated U.S. Gov’t coins and currency loaded inside the free safes.

It all begins at precisely 8:00am today. But only the first 2,080 readers who beat the 2 day order deadline will instantly be awarded the Armored Safes for free.

“This is all happening because thousands of near perfect Scratch-N-Dent Armored Safes have been RED-TAGGED. That’s why we are able to just give them away,” said Jefferson Marshall, Director, of the private World Reserve Monetary Exchange.

“Home safe sales have smashed 60 year sales records. People everywhere have been demand-ing heavy-duty Armored Safes, but right now we only have 2,080 left, no more, no less,” Marshall said.

“Call them whatever you want, nearly new, refurbished, recondi-tioned, but chances are you will be hard pressed to find any flaws. These are the World Reserve’s newest Armored Safe models, they simply have minor dings or blemishes. Once they get RED-TAGGED as Scratch-N-Dent, we can give them away for free,” Marshall said.

“Having an Armored Safe at home is one of the best ways to

prepare everyone for what could be lurking down the road. So if you thought you could nev-er afford your very own per-sonal Armored Safe, there’s no excuse now. You can actually get one for free when you beat the deadline to buy up your very own hoard of U.S. Coins and cur-

rency,” Marshall said.“Having valuable U.S. Gov’t

coins and currency serves as an economic life raft during tough times,” said Thomas C. Harris, Retired Deputy Director of a U.S. Treasury branch and advisor to the World Reserve.

“Remember, the hoard of U.S.

coins and currency contained in the free safes will never, never, never lose their face value. You will always have something worth a lot of money,” Harris said.

But, here’s the best part. Among the U.S. Gov’t issued coins and currency contained in each safe is the highly sought af-

ter American Eagle 1-ounce sil-ver bullion coin made from solid .999 fine silver, 80 of the first-issued new State Quarters, a Half-Dollar never released for circulation, a sealed roll of 25 first-issued Jefferson Nickels, 2 sealed rolls of the newly designed first-issued Pennies, a stack of historic $2 Bills and a vault tube of the Presidential Golden Dollars.

Here’s why all this is so impor-tant. Just think if you would have saved never-circulated Eisen-hower Dollar coins from 1974. Remarkably, they would now be worth 500% more in collector value.

No matter what, all the coins and currency in each safe will never lose their U.S. cash value.

“These safes are also one of the absolute best places to keep valuables and important papers. Everyone will now have a safe place to store their wills, jewelry, antiques, keys and even guns,” Marshall said.

“When the general public gets their hands on the huge hoard of U.S. Gov’t Coins and Currency and their free safes, they’ll real-ly feel like they just won the lot-tery,” he said.

How to get the free Armored Safes

FAMILY HEIRLOOM: Everyone is relieved when they learn that family valuables have been protected by a Safe. The only problem it can create is when it’s time to read your will. You’ll need to make sure everyone knows who gets what. Giving you peace of mind that everyone is taken care of.
