1. Why is Knowledge power(ful)? 2. Do you believe in ghosts? Explain to your group.

Use the “ontological study” from last night…1. What ways do we gather information?2. How do we “know” or “understand” something?3. How can you prove that something exists or that a relationship between things is real?4. “If you can’t measure it, it does not exist.” Agree/disagree, explain?5. If you were at a Starbucks and you heard two experts discussing the existence of ghosts, would you be

able to engage in a conversation with them? That is your task for this year…

• Join the conversation… (or, ideally, add something to it)…like Friends• Today/Tonight – ACTIVE read & complete… “Choosing your research project/topic”

Mindsets Falling Love

• p. 149 Aaron Beck, noted marriage authority, says that one of the most destructive beliefs for a relationship is “If we need to work at it, there’s something seriously wrong with our relationship.”

• p. 152 A no-effort relationship is a doomed relationship, not a great relationship. It takes work to communicate accurately and it takes work to expose and resolve conflicting hopes and beliefs. It doesn’t mean there is no “they lived happily ever after,” but it’s more like “they worked happily ever after.”

• The Partner as Enemy• p. 158 I remember when we were kids and did something dumb, like drop our ice-cream cone on our foot, we’d turn to our friend and say

“Look what you made me do.” Blame may make you feel less foolish, buy you still have a shoe full of ice cream-and a friend who’s on the defensive. In a relationship, the growth mindset lets you rise above blame, understand the problem, and try to fix it-together.

Competition: Who’s the Greatest?• p. 158 In the fixed mindset, where you’ve got to keep proving your competence, it’s easy to get into a competition with your partner. Who’s

the smarter, more talented, more likeable one?Developing in Relationships• p.159 When people embark on a relationship, they encounter a partner who is different from them, and they haven’t learned how to deal

with the differences. In a good relationship, people develop these skills and, as they do, both partners grow and the relationship deepens. But for this to happen, people need to feel they’re on the same side.

• p. 160 …the whole point of [partnerships/relationships] is to encourage your partner’s development and have them encourage yours.”Friendship• p. 160 Friendships, like partnerships, are places where we have a change to enhance each other’s development, and to validate each other.

Both are important. Friends can give each other the wisdom and courage to make growth-enhancing decisions, and friends can reassure each other of their fine qualities. Despite the dangers of praising traits, there are times when we need reassurance about ourselves: “Tell me I’m not a bad person for breaking up with my boyfriend.” “Tell me I’m not stupid even though I bombed on the exam.”

• p. 162 Conventional wisdom says that you know who your friends are in your times of need. And of course this view had merit. Who will stay by you day after day when you’re in trouble? However, sometimes an even tougher question is: Who can you turn to when good things happen? When you find a wonderful partner. When you get a great job offer or promotion. When your child does well. Who would be glad to hear it?

Page 29: AP CAPSTONE - RESEARCH. 8/31 – RESEARCH – “Knowledge is _____” OBJECTIVE: SWBAT begin working on developing their research topic Today: (review) 1.Why

• Chapter 6. Relationships: Mindsets in Love (or Not)

• Think of an especially painful rejection. Do you get stuck in a rejection—do you feel branded by it, do you ruminate about it and harbor feelings of revenge? “Revenge is sweet” – have you ever thought about that? What could you take from it that is useful and constructive for your current or future relationships?

• Have you closed yourself off to certain relationships because you expect perfection—total alignment in every way? This is a dream, and a bad one at that. Who would be wonderful additions to your life in spite of their imperfections?

• Imagine a scene between partners, one with a growth mindset and one with a fixed mindset. The growth mindset partner has a complaint. What does s/he say? What does the mate hear? How can this be resolved? Can you take criticism from others? Or do you make all kinds of excuses for why it’s not your fault? What do you think criticism means about you? How could you handle it better in the future?

• p. 149 Aaron Beck, noted marriage authority, says that one of the most destructive beliefs for a relationship is “If we need to work at it, there’s something seriously wrong with our relationship.”

• Can your partner read your mind? Are there times you’ve gotten annoyed with your partner because s/he doesn’t understand what you need or want? How could you explain more fully so that you’re both on the same page? What assumptions have you made about your partner—about roles, responsibilities, expectations–but never discussed them with him or her? Could this be causing friction between you?

• Do you know couples who seemed perfectly matched but then, to your surprise, broke up? Can you analyze it from a mindset perspective: Did they have trouble communicating about problems, growing from disagreements, or interpreting each other accurately? How would a “growth” mindset help these issues?

OBJECTIVE: SWBAT share their potential “studies” – where does the GAP exist?

• The college side of the committee are not very interested in RAVEN or CRAAP. However they are interested in information that comes from reliable, credible and authoritative sources around a topic and question. So, you do not need to include “The reliability of the source is ____, their ability to see is____ there was no validity present etc...” It needs to be more authentic than that. There is no formula that I could tell you to use. The expectation is that they have done enough research to identify and talk about the most important voices in the debate.

• So how many times is up to you (should be part of the PREP). Since there was not a requirement for an annotated bib in the pilot we have never had to have them submit one or more than one. The annotated bib will be really helpful to their lit review and I assume that some of our students will just do the annotated bib (as part of their PREP). When we encounter this, I would assume that we will suggest they think about both the quality and quantity of their research and whether or not they feel as if more research would be beneficial. Then, we will confer later (maybe even more than one time around this issue).

• The number of sources has more to do with the question they are trying to answer than setting an artificial number of sources. Generally speaking I have seen students be successful with anywhere from 10 sources to 60 sources. 20 seems like a good number but I don't really think that there is an exact number of sources required for success. Since the lit review is a part of the paper, I would say that their analysis of the major works around their question is more important than analysis of "x" sources. I don't think there is an "x" but you have to be able to articulate what is important in the field and their analysis of why

Today: •Ok, WOW, we have some strides to make…

• Based on my conversations with my colleagues at Rogers, Ferris and LC, we are still very much in the “race”

• However, we are not in first place – what does that mean?• I think we are behind in # of sources and depth of discovery• So, here are the remedies…better PREP binders

1. Annotated Bib – you need to create/keep/organize your sources2. Additional Lit Reviews – you have two more by Nov. 303. Inquiry Proposals – These need to be considered/developed4. Nov. 30 is a KEY DATE

11/5 – OBJECTIVE: SWBAT START their Literature Review.

Page 37: AP CAPSTONE - RESEARCH. 8/31 – RESEARCH – “Knowledge is _____” OBJECTIVE: SWBAT begin working on developing their research topic Today: (review) 1.Why

Today: •Annotated bib due today•We want to see your sources today PREP check in

11/9 – OBJECTIVE: SWBAT continue their Literature Review.

Today: •Talk with Mrs. Farnsworth about Naviance•Dr. Robinson is here for survey help/guidance•Turn-in Annotated bib today• INQUIRY PROPOSALS DUE FRIDAY – I would show them to Dr. Robinson and see if she understands

You have two “consultants” in the room today – utilize the time and go deep with your questions

11/10 – OBJECTIVE: SWBAT start their survey questions, turn-in their ANNOTATED BIBS, and continue their INQUIRY PROPOSALS.

Today: • Thank you notes…• Thing-pair-share…address the changes you think you will make in

your research process• INQUIRY PROPOSALS DUE MONDAY – new versions to me on

Monday• You need a LARGE body of evidence when surveying a case (study)• Freeway metaphor…you don’t know where you’re going but you

do have “signs” to read. At some point you’ll be at a destination and you can draw a conclusion based on the signs you’ve read

12/4 – OBJECTIVE: SWBAT revise & re-state their research questions, and re-write their INQUIRY PROPOSALS.

Page 41: AP CAPSTONE - RESEARCH. 8/31 – RESEARCH – “Knowledge is _____” OBJECTIVE: SWBAT begin working on developing their research topic Today: (review) 1.Why

Today: • Continue to work on your INQUIRY PROPOSALS - DUE TOMORROW

If you have a revised copy ready for today, I’d love to have it• We will “discuss” your proposals tomorrow (PREP check-in)• What I learned Friday afternoon…(yes, Friday afternoon )

• Consultants – MANDATORY – but YOU need to find them... “LC model”• Lit Reviews – we’re ahead??? Based on others, it looks like writing any sort of

preliminary draft was a good thing. However, we need to REVISIT our annotated Bibs• Research – means INVESTIGATING, SYNTHESIZING, GATHERING – you HAVE TO READ• Results – BASED on research…surveys/correlations are helpful

12/7 – Pearl Harbor Day – a day that will live in INFAMYOBJECTIVE: SWBAT revise & re-state their research questions, and re-write their inquiry proposals. CONTINUE TO RESEARCH.

Page 42: AP CAPSTONE - RESEARCH. 8/31 – RESEARCH – “Knowledge is _____” OBJECTIVE: SWBAT begin working on developing their research topic Today: (review) 1.Why

Today: • Finish INQUIRY PROPOSALS – PREP check-ins• Consultants – MANDATORY – YOU need to find them by

Groovy Shoes Jan. 19• Lit Reviews – Next draft January 15

• Research – means INVESTIGATING, SYNTHESIZING, GATHERING – you HAVE TO READ

Potential email to a local professor…Good morning,My name is ____________ and I’m a senior at Shadle Park High School here in town. I’m currently enrolled in the AP Capstone program at Shadle and we are in the process of developing an extensive research paper. This is the second course in a two-year program and it allows us to deeply explore an academic topic or issue over the course of the school year. I have been working with my teacher, Mr. Harmon, to develop a research question. At this point, I need help that Mr. Harmon cannot provide. Because of your position and extensive work in ______________, I’d like to ask if you would consider helping me develop the methodology section of my paper. If you are not able to help, could you please provide the name of another professor or graduate student in your department who may be able to assist. You may contact me at the information listed below. Thank you very much for your consideration and potential help in guiding me in this process of scholarly work. Mr. Scott HarmonShadle Park [email protected]

• # of questions• Who?• How do you get participants?• What are they being asked? • Administration of survey: how will you scale it?

• WHAT are you trying to discover? NOT determine, prove, show – it is a method of research

• So what?????? What happens AFTER the survey?
