Wtf is “NPP”? • Let’s start from scratch, even if you did the homework/looked up NPP on your own.

• Plants! • They capture energy from the sun, turn it into sugars to feed themselves and consumers
• They are the “primary” source of energy in any ecosystem (can see this from an energy pyramid)
Energy Pyramid/ Rule of 10 This is why plants are the most important trophic level!

Primary Production • Primary Production: General term for mount of energy converted from the sun by primary producers (plants) in an ecosystem.
• RATE of primary production: Amount of solar energy converted over a specific period of TIME.

What about the word “net”?

What stays in the “net” is what you actually get to keep
Net Primary Production • Definition: Amount of energy leftover after autotrophs have met their metabolic needs (needs for survival).
• Similar to idea of “profit” from Algebra 2 (what’s left after costs are taken out)
• Energy “profit” can be used to create MORE biomass (ex: plants can grow extra seeds and leaves)
Gross Primary Production • TOTAL amount of energy fixed by autotrophs.
• Equivalent to “revenue” in nature • Costs not taken out yet
• Revenue = Profit + cost
Energy Equation
• GPP = R + NPP • Respiration= • Gross Primary Production (total energy)= Respiration (energy cost) + Net Primary Production (energy profit)
How is NPP changed? • Relies on two factors: 1. Quality and quantity of water 2. Availability of sunlight
• Why? Because NPP relies on PHOTOSYNTHESIS, and photosynthesis requires water and sunlight.
Check for Understanding • If deserts have so much sunlight, why do they have such low NPP?
• If tropical rainforests are so dark with all the shade from the trees, why do they have such high NPP?
