IntroductionOhio Brass offers a full line of polymer arresters fordistribution voltages. The PVR targets cable applica-tions where low discharge voltages promote longercable life. The PDV-100 is a heavy duty arrester madefor overhead distribution equipment protection. ThePDV-65 offers cost effective lightning performance withonly slightly lower capabilities. These arresters combine the advantages of a polymerhousing and metal-oxide varistor valve blocks. On thefollowing pages are descriptions of the benefits, designtest reports and arrester accessories.PDV/PVR arresters join an impressive list of advancesthat Ohio Brass has brought to arrester technologysince it began making arresters in 1950. Improvementsin design have increased protective margins anddurability. More important in terms of dollars andservice reliability, Ohio Brass arresters have enabledequipment manufacturers to lower insulation levels andsaved millions of dollars for power companies.

The polymer-housed arrester can be used with all standardmounting arms and brackets. They come with all the neces-sary fasteners, isolators and terminal attachments. A spe-cially designed glass-filled polyester insulating arm extendsfrom the arrester to the NEMA crossarm bracket, eliminatingthe need for installation of a metal clamping band around thearrester. The insulating arm not only eliminates the rust andcorrosion sometimes encountered with a metal clampingband, but also has been treated with an inhibitor to resistultraviolet damage.BenefitsThe PDV/PVR housing material excels in tolerance toweather extremes from desert heat to arctic cold, and resistsdamage from ultraviolet rays and ozone. Samples of thepolymer have survived the equivalent of over 50 years ofaccelerated ultraviolet testing. If the PDV/PVR arresters are dropped or otherwise mis-handled, there is little risk of damage, in contrast to thebrittleness of porcelain. Internal parts cannot move. The riskof vandalism is reduced. A bullet can penetrate the housing, causing arrester failure. But polymer does not shatter as doesporcelain, which scatters sharp fragments.A PDV/PVR arrester weighs less than its porcelain counter-part, again making it easier to handle and less costly to ship. The PDV/PVR arresters are suitable for a number of differentapplications, such as transformer mounting, enclosed inswitchgear or underhung in line protection applications. As non-ceramic arresters, the PDV/PVR offer an imposing listof benefits. The capability of failing with less danger toequipment and personnel, durability and ease of handlinglead the list. The PDV/PVR arrester is a worthy developmentin the long list of Ohio Brass surge arrester innovationsinnovations that have regularly improved protective levels, lowered costs of protection and enabled utilities to operateequipment with lower basic insulation levels, with savings ofmillions of dollars.

Note: The PDV/PVR arresters comply with ANSI and IECstandards for distribution arresters.

PDV-100 and PDV-65 DistributionSurge ArrestersThe PDV-100 arrester was introduced in 1986 as the firstU.S. non-ceramic arrester for heavy duty applications. TheOhio Brass Company then expanded its line of polymer-housed distribution arresters with a normal duty PDV-65 andPVR arrester. The polymer housing on these arresters offers many benefitsnever before available. For example, the arrester virtuallyeliminates the opportunity for damage from mishandling inpacking, shipping and installation. Because the PDV does nothave an internal atmosphere, failure from breathing orpumping moisture through minute cracks or other imperfec-tions is also eliminated. The application of system overvoltage, above arrester designlimits, may result in failure as with all arresters. The housingsplits or tears in contrast to the potentially violent failuremode of porcelain into many sharp fragments. The potentialdanger to nearby equipment and personnel is reduceddrastically. The PDV/PVR arresters have the same high-quality metal-oxide varistor material used in other Ohio Brass DynaVarstation, intermediate and distribution arresters which haveoperated successfully for over 15 years. PDV/PVR have allthe gapless MOV advantages such as high temporaryovervoltage capability, contamination resistance, improvedsurge-duty capability and excellent protective characteristics.Alloy ESP HousingThe PDV/PVR arrester housing is made from the same ESPrubber material used in high voltage insulators. The ESPhousing resists tracking from surface leakage currents.Leakage distance is exceptional. In addition to the performance record as an insulator material,ESPs excellent properties have been confirmed in a series ofperformance tests that include tracking resistance, contami-nation, aging and seal design. As with polymer insulators, polymer arresters have high cantilever and tensile strengths.Basic ConstructionThe polymer housing fits like a tight elastic glove around theinternal components in contrast to porcelain housings whichare separated from the varistors. Even though vacuumpumps can remove most moisture from the space inside theporcelain housing, a source of potential trouble can develop ifsmall cracks let additional moisture enter the housing. In the PDV/PVR arresters, the varistors are locked in placewith tightly wound layers of fiberglass filament impregnatedwith epoxy resin. The polymer housing design excludes airand moisture. The inside diameter of the housing is slightlysmaller than the outside diameter of the cylindrical elementproviding a snug fit.The basic PDV/PVR housing is only six inches long for a 10kV unit 50 to 60 percent shorter than the porcelainequivalent.A great advantage of the PDV/PVR construction is that faultwithstand capability can be maintained throughout thevoltage range. The fault current capability of porcelain isreduced as the housing lengthens.

Tests Verify PDV & PVR Arrester DesignOhio Brass introduced the Multirester II distribution arrestertwenty years ago. This design had an automatic pressurerelief system at the lower end and greatly reduced theprobability of porcelain fragmentation following failure whileenergized in service. However, the desirability of pressurerelief was not widely recognized and few utilities consideredthe benefits worth the added cost and manufacture wasdiscontinued after a few years.A decade later, the desirability of pressure relief in distributionarresters became more widely recognized. A design testprocedure was incorporated into ANSI Standard C62.1 andseveral designs with end venting systems, sometimesenhanced with arc transfer systems and/or use of internalliners, have been available in recent years. All of thesedesigns continued the use of porcelain housings. Therefore, ifrated fault current magnitude, or duration, is exceeded, therisk of porcelain fragmentation remains. The ESP polymer-housed PDV/PVR arresters with epoxy/fiberglass-wrapped MOV disc modules eliminates the majorhazard of an arrester failure by not having a porcelainhousing to explode if a power arc is established within thearrester.

Full Scale Fault Current TestsA series of full voltage tests was conducted in accordancewith Section 8.10 of ANSI/IEEE C62.11-1993 to determinethe failure modes of the PDV/PVR arresters. The 8.4 kVMCOV specimens were assembled with fine fuse wireshunting the blocks before assembly within the module. Asdescribed by the standard, this technique simulates the resultof arrester failure by internal dielectric breakdown.Fault currents of 500 to 20,000 amperes RMS symmetrical fordurations of 10 to 120 cycles were used in these studies onthe PDV-100/PVR arrester. Fault currents of 500 to 10,000amperes RMS symmetrical for durations of 10 to 120 cycleswere used in the PDV-65 studies. Successful performancewas demonstrated when the epoxy/fiberglass-wrappedmodules either ruptured or burned through to relieve internalpressure. The polymer housings then split open to relievepressure. At high fault currents the housing may becomedetached from the MOV module. Since higher voltagearresters were assembled by modular construction, the testresults are valid for all arrester voltage ratings. The test sequence was recorded by ultra high-speed moviesand camera photographs of the before and after condition ofthe arresters.

    Arrester Lead Length

The first step in reducing voltage stress to extend the life ofinsulated equipment is to use metal-oxide varistor (MOV)arresters which have lower discharge voltage levels thanequivalent silicon-carbide (SiC) designs. The next step in reducing voltage stress is the use ofoptimum connection methods for the arrester lead wires. The highest current surge voltage stress occurs whenlightning strokes to the overhead line have fast rates-of-rise.An arrester discharge current which reaches its crest in 1sec will produce 10% more voltage across an MOV arrester, and 30% more voltage across an SIC arrester, than will thestandard 8 sec test waves used to establish the comparativeIR discharge voltage data shown in arrester catalogs. Addingto the surge voltage across the arrester is the L di/dt inductivedrop in the lead wire carrying the surge current. It is now known that fast-rising arrester discharge currents aremuch more common than previously believed. In the late1970s, more accurate measurements of arrester surgecurrents were taken which showed rates-or-rise at 13 kA/sec in half of the discharges, with a maximum value of 60kA/sec. Consistent with this relatively new data, a realisticestimate for the lead wire voltage drop in arrester installationsexposed to lightning is 6 kV/foot - this value is now used forcalculating the protective margins under fast-front surgeconditions.

Many pole mounted transformer installations use arrestersmounted on the crossarm. Such installations tend to havevery long arrester leads which greatly increase surge voltagestress on transformer windings. Arrester lead is the combinedlength of line and ground lead wire in series with the arresterAND in parallel with the protected device (transformer in thiscase). An arrester with lead length of 10 feet can typically add 60 kVto the arrester discharge voltage during fast-front lightningsurges. Typical arresters used in this type (13.2 kV system,95 kV BIL) of installation would discharge such a surge atabout 36.5 kV, making the total voltage surge on the trans-former 96.5 kV. This leaves a protective margin to the 110 kVchopped-wave withstand of only 11% well below the 20%minimum recommended. However, the protective margin could be greatly improved bymoving the ground connection of the transformers up the poleto just under the crossarm, to where the arrester groundleads meet the pole ground. This connection method wouldreduce arrester lead from ten to five feet. Lead wire inductivedrop would then be reduced from 60 to 30 kV. Total voltagestress on the transformers would be reduced to 71 kV andthe protective margin would be increased to a comfortable55%.

For more information on lead length, please requestpublication EU1202-H.

NORMALLY RECOMMENDED DYNAVAR PDV/PVRMCOV FOR VARIOUS SYSTEM VOLTAGES

Selection of arrester size is based upon the maximumcontinuous operating voltage (MCOV) that is applied acrossthe arrester in service (line-to-ground). For arresters oneffectively grounded systems, this is normally the maximumline-to-ground voltage -- e.g., 7.65 kV on a 12.47 kV multi-grounded system. For ungrounded or impedance-groundedsystems, the MCOV should be at least 90 percent of maxi-mum phase-to-phase voltage. Smaller arresters than shownmay be used, contact your Ohio Brass representative fordetails. For convenience, the catalog data shown on page 12includes the traditional duty-cycle voltage rating associatedwith the MCOV of each arrester.

Time Duration - SecondsDynaVar PDV/PVR arresters are gapless and all the system line-to-ground voltage appearson the metal-oxide valve elements. The blocks can withstand significant overvoltage for alimited time, depending on the magnitude of any immediately preceding surge duty. Theycan withstand 1.1 percent of MCOV for periods of 2000 hours, up to five percent of the life ofthe arrester.

PVR arresters can withstand about 3.4 KJ/KV of MCOV within one minute. DynaVar PDV-100 arresters can absorb up to 2.2 kJ per kV of MCOV within one minute. DynaVar PDV-65arresters can absorb up to 1.4 kJ per kV of MCOV within one minute. This maximum energyrating may be repeated many times provided there is a sufficient cooling time to keeparrester temperature at reasonable levels.

Amps for the PDV-100/PVR heavy duty arrester and faultcurrent capability up to 10,000 Amps for the PDV-65normal duty arrester.

Optional Attachments for PDV &PVR Surge ArrestersThe installed cost of distribution arresters can be held to aminimum by ordering only the attachments specificallyrequired for the application. Ohio Brass simplifies thisprocedure by offering a variety of interchangeable accesso-ries which can be obtained by combining a coded suffixnumber with the basic arrester catalog number. The samesuffix numbers apply to accessories for the PDV/PVR.The coded suffix number is determined by replacing the 0s inthe 7000 code with the appropriate number digit to specifythe required accessories. The first digit after the 7 describesthe line terminal hardware; the second digit describes themounting hardware; and the third digit describes the groundterminal hardware. An 0 in any of the three positionsindicates that no attachment for that position is beingordered. The tabulation at the bottom of this page can be used toobtain the suffix code for all common attachments offered byOhio Brass. The illustrations (on pages 10 and 11) providethe suffix code for some of the more popular combinations.Ohio Brass district managers have information on additionaloptional attachments not listed in this catalog. Recommenda-tions will be made upon request. How to Specify a 7000 Suffix(Example) To obtain the 7000 code suffix number for a 10 kVduty cycle rated PDV-65 arrester equipped with a lineterminal, wire clamp, insulating base bracket, NEMAcrossarm hanger for a 4 x 5 crossarm and a ground leadisolator with terminal nut, follow this procedure:

METAL-OXIDE ARRESTER INSULATION COORDINATION34.5 kV System

Insulation CoordinationThese electrical characteristics are used to determineprotective margins for insulation levels in use. These two figures illustrate a 34.5 kV effectivelygrounded system, 150 kV BIL, protected with 22 kVMCOV Type PDV arresters.Figure 1 shows equipment protected with a PDV-100arrester Catalog Number 213622 and Figure 2 shows thesame equipment protected with a PDV-65 arresterCatalog Number 217272.The protective margins are calculated using the followingformula:

    Insulation LevelArrester Discharge Voltage( - 1 x 100 = % Margin)

The insulation levels are obtained from the manufacturerof the equipment being protected. The arrester dischargevoltages are obtained from the table on page 12.For example, the protective margin for the BIL isdetermined by first finding the arrester discharge voltageat the impulse current level selected. In this example, the10 kA discharge current is used as representative oftypical lightning stroke currents discharged through thearrester. The 10 kA 8/20 discharge voltage of catalognumber 213622 is 86.5 kV. The percent protectivemargin using the formula is:

( 150 kV86.5 kV - 1 x 100 =73 percent.)The protective margins for other impulse currents arefound in a similar fashion. In the case of the PDV-65arrester, the 10 kA 8/20 discharge voltage of the arresteris 99 kV. This results in a protective margin of 52percent.These examples include many simplifying assumptions. Not included are the effects of faster rates of current riseon the discharge voltage, reduced insulation levels dueto various factors, and line and ground leads. For example, if the effect of lead length was included inthe calculations and 1.6 kV per foot of lead length addedto the discharge voltage of the arrester. With two feet ofline lead and two feet of ground lead, 6.4 kV is added tothe published discharge voltage of the arrester. There-fore, the discharge voltage of the PDV-100 is effectively92.9 kV, resulting in a reduction of protective margin to61 percent at 10 kA. In the case of the PDV-65 arrester, the 99 kV discharge voltage of the arrester is added tothe 6.4 kV from the leads resulting in equipment seeing105.4 kV reducing the protective margin to 42 percent. The chopped wave strength of the insulation beingprotected is typically coordinated with the .5 secdischarge voltage of the surge arrester. The heavy dutyPDV-100 uses a 10 kA current while the PDV-65 catalogvalue is for a 5 kA peak current. The switching surge insulation level of the equipment is

coordinated with the 500 ampere switching discharge voltage ofthe surge arrester. The effects of faster rates of rise and of reduced insulationstrength due to aging effects would result in further reducedprotective margins.Industry standards recommend minimum margins of 20 percentfor the chopped wave and BIL levels and 15 percent for switchingsurge protection.
