“PERIPHERAL INTERFACING IN

APC”

Overview

• To develop a palm computer which consumes less power • Does not emit any radiations above

the specified threshold.• This provides higher order security

This deals with the interfacing of the peripherals in APC.

The peripherals interfaced are• Bluetooth• Wi-Fi• Global Positioning System (GPS)• Liquid Crystal Display (LCD)• Keypad

Introduction

Atom Palm Computer (APC) is a portable computer that has features of a hand held computer like laptops.

Problem statement

• Need to geographically locate a soldier in military areas.• In earlier technologies, mobile

phones were used to obtain information about location.

REQUIREMENTS

HARDWARE

APC uses• Atom Processor• System Controller Hub (SCH)• DDR2 technology (1600x2 MbPS)• Embedded Controller

REQUIREMENTS

SOFTWARE• Windows XP or above for the host

computer• Windows 7 for the device APC• Visual Studio v2010

DESIGN METHODOLOGY

INTERFACES

The interfaces mentioned in the above Block Diagram are listed below

1. Front Side Bus (FSB) 2. Universal Serial Bus (USB) 3. Low Voltage Differential Signalling (LVDS) 4. Parallel ATA (PATA) 5. Serial Digital Input Output (SDIO) 6. Low Pin Count (LPC) 7. General Purpose Input Output (GPIO) 8. Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) 9. General Purpose Input Output (GPIO) 10. Inter- Integrated Circuit (I2 C)

• ATOM Processor – Intel Z520• System Controller Hub (SCH) – Intel US15W• Embedded Controller – Renasas H8S/2117R

Embedded Controller

• RW (Read and Write everything) utility software• Ports 62 and 66 are used

Building of an Application

The creation of the button is done as shown below

MERITS

• Enhanced computing speed.• Supports all windows based

applications. • Operates well in high altitude and

damp heat(+50°C) conditions.

DEMERITS

• It is bulky to handle.• Small screen size. • Small resolution of 640x480 .

APPLICATIONS

• Geographical location tracing. • Sending of reports for data to

communication centres.

CONCLUSION

• Atom Palm Computer (APC) is becoming a standard in military applications.

This device has used Atom processor with System controller hub and embedded controller on VC++ platform for LCD brightness control and enabling/disabling of peripherals (Bluetooth, GPS and keypad)

FUTURE ENHANCEMENT

To provide more advantageous features, the Atom Processor Z520 can be replaced by Z530 and DDR3 technology can replace DDR2 technology.
