API SC10 Cooperative Test Program 2014-15:Dyckerhoff Class G Sample Preparation and Distribution

Main aim:Provision of a most homogeneous Class G sample material toall participating well cement laboratories

Production facility:Dyckerhoff plantLengerich, Germany



Working steps:

1. Selection of a sufficientlarge sample

– two 1.5 Mton big bags fromrunning production

– pre-check of API and DY internal requirements



2. Preparation of sample units• disposal of top layer of cement in the big bag• quick filling of small quantities (4 kgs) of sample cement

into double polyethylene (PE) bags• bag label between PE bags (bag content label)



– numbering / marking PE bags– a hard copy of Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is placed

into every bucket– numbering & marking of the sample buckets

– Packaging: 2 PE bags per sample in one plastic bucket– Sample size: 8 kgs

3. Consistency check

– take 13 random samples evenly distributedover the entirety of samples

– complete check of API parametersof randomly taken samples

– poperly store remaining, not shipped sample cement– release of all other samples for shipment

4. Distribution of samples– Base is the participants list provided by API – Each sample is packed into a numbered PE bucket (20 liter)– The sample and bucket numbers for each participant were

recorded

– Generally: Single packagesi.e. one sample per participant

– Exceptions: Collective packages,from 5 till 100 samples in one shipment,further distribution bythe recipient tomultiple other consignees/participants(usually other subsidiaries)

5. Organisation of sample shipment

– select and instruct forwarding company– decide on method of shipment

– Single samples: by courier service

– Multiple package to one destination: by air freight

– issuing of the complete shipping and customs documents foreach shipment (participant)

– shipping documents must include a pro-forma invoice– for facilitation of customs procedures a low value of the

material was declared (24 € per sample)– Certificate of origin, issued by the chamber of commerce is to

be added for certain countries



6. After shipment activities

– follow up of delivery status via courier service internet tracking– modification of shipment documents upon request (7 times)– dispatch of additional documents when requested– provide new set of samples

- late coming participants (6 times)– answer technical inquiries, resolve technical

problems (1 case)



7. Sample shipment status per May 31th, 2014 Total number of dispatched samples: 321 (i.e. 2.568 metric tons)

Delivered samples to destination: 310 Not delivered samples: 11

(3 x Indonesia, 3 x Brazil, 2 x Saudi Arabia, 2 x Mexico, 1 x Kuwait)

Reasons for non delivery: mainly new customs regulationsdifferent interpretation of existing customs regulations

Consignees of not delivered samples were contacted forclarification and preparation of second sample dispatch



8. Problems and Proposed measures

Aging of test samples Ship test quantity in several small(in participant's lab) portions, separately packed in double PE bags

Damaged buckets using buckets of strong material, add hint on bucket "Fragile"

Sample undeliverable Phone no. and e-mail of contact person is of vital importance (must be part of the application form and shipping documents)

Subsequent shipments Keep a sufficient quantity of sample cement on stock (suggestion: 10 % of the total, shippedquantity)

High shipping costs Single samples: Courtesy of DyckerhoffMultiple samples: Consignees will be contacted



Packaging (buckets etc.): 6.037,43 EUR 8.300,00 USD

Shipping costs: 11.124,48 EUR 15.200,00 USD

Total: 17.161,91 EUR 23.500,00 USD
