Continuing our policy of bringing our

    customers the ultimate effectiveness in

    fire detection that current technology

allows, Series 65 has been developed

from the highly successful Series 60

    range of conventional detectors.

Series 65 incorporates well-proven sensing technologies, together with advances in materials and electronics technology, including an IC based on that used in XP95 analogueaddressable detectors.

Having a wide operating voltage of 9-33V, the Series 65detectors can be integrated into security systems, when usedwith a relay base.

The Series 65 wide voltage range consists of ionisation, integrating ionisation and optical smoke detectors, 4 gradesof heat detector and a range of bases. The detectors areidentical in appearance to Series 60.

Each type of detector is available in three versions:

    a standard version

a version with an LED which flashescontinuously in quiescent mode

and one with both a flashing LED and amagnet-operated test switch (reed relay).

Series 65 has been tested andapproved to the following standards:

    EN54-7:2000 optical and ionisationsmoke detectors

    EN54-5:2000 heat detectors

  • Series 65 Ionisation Smoke Detector

The sensing part of the detector consists of twochambers - an open, outer chamber and a semi-sealed reference chamber within. Mounted inthe reference chamber is a low activityradioactive foil of Americium 241 whichenables current to flow between the inner andouter chambers when the detector is poweredup. As smoke enters the detector, it causes areduction of the current flow in the outer chamberand hence an increase in voltage measured at thejunction between the two chambers. The voltageincrease is monitored by the electronic circuitrywhich triggers the detector into the alarm state ata preset threshold. An externally visible red LEDlights up when the detector changes to alarmstate.

An integrating ionisation detector, suitable foruse in areas where transient levels of smokemay be expected, is also available.

    Series 65 Optical Smoke Detector

Optical smoke detectors incorporate a pulsingLED located in a chamber within the housing ofthe detector. The chamber is designed toexclude light from any external source. At an angle to the LED is a photo-diode whichnormally does not register the column of lightemitted by the LED. In the event of smokefrom a fire entering the chamber, the lightpulse from the LED will be scattered andhence registered by the photo-diode. If thephoto-diode sees smoke on the two followingpulses, the detector changes into the alarmstate and the indicator LED lights up. Thedetector housing is identical to that of theionisation detector but has an indicator LEDwhich is clear in quiescent state but producesred light in alarm.

    Series 65 Heat Detector

The A1R, BR and CR (rate-of-rise) heat detectorsoperate by using a matched pair of thermistorsto sense heat. One thermistor is exposed to theambient temperature, the other is sealed. Innormal conditions the two thermistors registersimilar temperatures, but, on the development of afire, the temperature recorded by the exposedthermistor will increase rapidly, resulting in animbalance, causing the detector to change intothe alarm state. Rate-of-rise detectors aredesigned to detect a fire as the temperatureincreases, but they also have a fixed upper limitat which the detector will go into alarm if therate of temperature increase has been too slowto trigger the detector earlier.

The CS (static response) heat detector has onlyone thermistor and changes to the alarm stateat a preset temperature. Externally, the heatdetectors are distinguishable from the smokedetectors by having wide openings to thesurrounding atmosphere to allow good movementof air around the external thermistor.

    Series 65 Bases

The bases have been designed to enable detectorsto be plugged in without any need for force -particularly useful when fitting to suspendedceilings. All Series 65 bases are lockable.

The standard base is identical to the Series 60base, so uses the same part number, 45681-200.It contains no electronic parts which could bedamaged during installation.

    Relay Bases

    Application

Series 65 relay bases are primarily intended foruse with control units using 4-wire detector supplyand alarm initiating circuits. Where local codesallow, they may also be used in 2- and 4-wirecircuits to provide volt-free control signals to anauxiliary system such as an automatic doorcloser. They are not suitable for use in systemswhere it is specified or required that operationof the auxiliary system shall be fail-safe and mustnot be used with any other type of detector.

The standard Series 65 relay base, 45681-245,provides one set of volt-free, changeover (form C)contacts that change state when the detectorsignals an alarm.

Auxiliary relay base, 45681-246, provides twosets of volt-free changeover contacts to facilitatethe switching of a remote LED or other auxiliarydevice.

EOL (end-of-line) relay bases are intended foruse with 4-wire circuits and feature two sets ofchangeover contacts and a power supervisionrelay. Part numbers: 45681-247, for circuits havinga supply voltage between 9 and 18 volts DC and45681-248 for circuits having a supply voltagebetween 16 and 33 volts DC.

12V relay base, 45681-508, is designed for use inboth fire and security systems. For fire systems ajumper on the PCB is fitted to a latching position. For security systems the jumper is moved toanother position so that the base is non-latching.
