Definition•Apoptosis, also termed type I cell death, is defined as characteristic changes in the nuclear morphology, including chromatin condensation and fragmentation, overall cell shrinkage, blebbing of the plasma membrane and formation of apoptotic bodies that contain nuclear or cytoplasmic material.
