UDL- A UNIVERSAL DESIGN FOR LEARNING
WHY UDL?
3 PRINCIPLES & INSTRUCTIONAL EXAMPLES
TECHNOLOGY & UDL
WHAT UDL COULD DO FOR OUR STUDENTS
Brain Research & UDL’s support
Tools and Resources

“The UDL Guidelines are based on research from several very different fields, and from many different researchers at many different universities and research organizations. That research has been reviewed, compiled and organized by educators and researchers at CAST. The process spanned a 10 year period and involved several different stages.”

Our students are not all achieving at the level they could be
Some of our current practices are out of date and are not best for all students
Our students are different, diversity needs to be planned for from the ground up not adjusted for on the fly.
It works with PBIS!
UDL will allow our children to use their strengths and have choices in how they display their learning.
Why UDL? Why now? Why us?

THREE PRINCIPLES OF UDL
MULTIPLES !
•Multiple means of representation
•Multiple means of action & expression
•Multiple means of engagement
![Page 6: App3 beckettj](https://reader037.vdocument.in/reader037/viewer/2022110114/5472aeeeb4af9fc30a8b4fa8/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Multiples means of representation
In the Classroom
Text Language Translation
Headphones with audiotapes or video clips
Reading Aloud
Highlight the BIG ideas
Mnemonics and other memory tools
Online Glossary
Multimedia Applications
![Page 7: App3 beckettj](https://reader037.vdocument.in/reader037/viewer/2022110114/5472aeeeb4af9fc30a8b4fa8/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Multiple means of action & expression
In the classroom
Manipulatives
Kinesthetic activities
Spell Checker
Webs, flow charts, concept map
Audio recordings
Checklists and Prompts
![Page 8: App3 beckettj](https://reader037.vdocument.in/reader037/viewer/2022110114/5472aeeeb4af9fc30a8b4fa8/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Multiples means of Engagement
In the Classroom
Student Choice of format
Journals & Portfolios
Interactive Notebook
Multiple tools for information
Different Groupings
Modeling
Peer Tutoring
![Page 9: App3 beckettj](https://reader037.vdocument.in/reader037/viewer/2022110114/5472aeeeb4af9fc30a8b4fa8/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
TECHNOLOGY AND UDL- IT MULTIPLIES!Showing educators how the student’s brain feels, explains and interprets the topic
Technology beats with UDL
Customized displays
Text assistance
Multiple Medias
Online Simulations
Virtual Field Trips
Greater Communication & Collaboration
Response Methods
Quick Reflection & Assessment
…

What it can do for Our KidsChange how they are assessed
Increase engagement and motivation to learn
Provide them new chances to be successful
Allow their strengths to be used to help them learn
This could help us build curriculum from the ground up since that is a major complaint in our building.

“Individuals bring a huge variety of skills, needs, and interests to learning. Neuroscience reveals that these differences are as varied and unique as our DNA or fingerprints.” (Salend 2009)
What many of us have heard before and what brain research states as fact…
Look around. We don’t all take in information the same way. So why would we only allow one or two ways for the students to learn it?

UDL Supports DiversityDiversity comes in many forms; linguistic, cultural, ethnic, academic
By practicing UDL’s principles and including technology obstacles are lessened and in some cases avoided.
