AIBP Site Chronology

Page 2: APPENDIX C Available Aerial Photographs Of AIBP For 1959 ... fileSSFL Area I Burn Pit site chronology, based on aerial photo analysis 1959 photo (fair resolution) Key observations:

SSFL Area I Burn Pit site chronology, based on aerial photo analysis

1959 photo (fair resolution) Key observations:

Most of site is graded. Earth Ponds 1 and 2 area is undeveloped. Two burn pits are evident on NE and NW side of what would later be Concrete Pond 2. Four disturbed/materials-storage areas identified W of burn pits and N of burn pits. One disturbed/materials-storage area identified NNE of the burn pits. Possible debris/storage area SSE of easternmost burn pit.

1960 photo (good resolution) Key observations:

Graded areas similar to 1959. Burn pits slightly larger. Additional pits are evident: one on east side of the two present in 1959, pit(s) WNW of

the two pits seen in 1959, one in control center area (disturbed/materials-storage area in 1959), and one on N side of Perimeter Pond.

Numerous additional disturbed/materials-storage areas around and N of Burn Pit 2 area. These are possibly burn pits with constructed berms.

Perimeter Pond now present. Possible debris/storage area SSE of easternmost burn pit (same as 1959 observation).

1963 photo (poor resolution) Key observations:

Graded areas similar to 1959 and 1960, although more graded/disturbed areas appear around Area I Road to the N and NW (near what would later be referred to as hummocky area west). Three burn pits at Concrete Pads 2 and 3 area still present, as well as N side of Perimeter Pond. Pit in Control Center Area not identified in 1963. Disturbed/materials-storage areas around and N of Burn Pit 2 generally appear absent.

New pit identified at Concrete Pad 2 area, and at Burn Pits 1 and 2 (approx location of later Burn Pits 1 and 2).

Large new pit identified at W side of Earth Pond 3. New disturbed/materials-storage areas at Former Fire Dept. Demonstration Area, W

and N of Concrete Pad 1 Area, N and S of Control Center Area, and in Hummocky Area (East).

Road south of site now appears. New road (operational area?) appears N of Area I Road, north of east hummocky area.

1964 photo (fair resolution) Key observations :

Graded areas similar to earlier years, but slightly more extensive. Earth Ponds 1 and 2 area now graded. Possible discoloration of surface north of this area.

Pits at Burn Pits 1 and 2 are larger. Three pits at Concrete Ponds 2 and 3 Area are gone and/or replaced by three smaller pits/ponds at locations of Concrete Pads 2 and 3.

Page 3: APPENDIX C Available Aerial Photographs Of AIBP For 1959 ... fileSSFL Area I Burn Pit site chronology, based on aerial photo analysis 1959 photo (fair resolution) Key observations:

New pit in Hummocky Area (East), north of Perimeter Pond, and east side of pit identified in the area (1963, but not identified in 1964). Large pit(s) identified at Former Excavation #4 and south of Concrete Pad 2 berm.

Pit identified at NW side of Earth Pond 3 (1963), expanded to include Earth Pond 3. Numerous disturbed/materials-storage areas identified that differ from 1963. Possible discolored surface adjacent to NE side of unit boundary (vegetation?)

1965 photo (poor resolution) Key observations:

Graded areas similar to, but slightly less extensive than in 1964. Pits match well with configuration of Burn Pits 1 and 2 and Concrete Ponds 2 and 3.

Large pit at Former Excavation #4 is same as 1964. Pit at Earth Pond 3 matches Earth Pond 3 boundaries. New pit at Concrete Pond 1. 1963 pit in Hummocky Area (East), but not identified in 1964, returns in 1965.

Fewer disturbed/materials-storage areas than in 1964 (poor photo quality). 1967 photo (fair resolution) Key observations:

Graded areas less extensive than in 1965 (although less vegetation seen within unit boundary compared to 1965), particularly N and NW of Perimeter Pond and in Hummocky Area (West).

Pits match well with configuration of Burn Pits 1 and 2, Concrete Pond 1, Concrete Ponds 2 and 3, and Earth Pond 3.

Earth Ponds 1 and 2 are identifiable (therefore constructed between 1965 and 1967). 1965 pits (at Former Excavation #4 and in Hummocky Area (East)) are not evident. Concrete Ponds 2 and 3 appear to be located just west of later locations – possible

photo distortion. Disturbed/materials-storage areas are similar to 1965, but poor quality of 1965 photo

make this difficult for comparison. 1972 photo (fair resolution) Key observations:

Graded areas very similar to 1967. Pits match well with configuration of Burn Pits 1 and 2 and Concrete Ponds 2 and 3.

Large pit and objects at Former Excavations #2 and #4 of 1965 and 1967. Pits match well with configuration of Burn Pits 1 and 2, Concrete Pond 1, Concrete

Ponds 2 and 3, and Earth Pond 3. Possible pit located west of Earth Ponds 1 and 2. Disturbed/materials-storage areas are similar to 1967.

1975 photo (poor resolution) Key observations:

Graded areas very similar to 1972. Pits match well with configuration of Burn Pits 1 and 2, Concrete Pond 1, Concrete

Ponds 2 and 3, and Earth Pond 3.

Page 4: APPENDIX C Available Aerial Photographs Of AIBP For 1959 ... fileSSFL Area I Burn Pit site chronology, based on aerial photo analysis 1959 photo (fair resolution) Key observations:

1965 pits (at Former Excavation #4, in Hummocky Area (East)) are not evident. More disturbed/materials-storage areas are apparent in this photo Notable new ones

include berm of Concrete Pad 2, at Explosive Sheds 1 and 2, at (and N of) Former Excavation #4.

1977 photo (fair resolution) Key observations:

Graded area is similar to 1975, except additional grading in Hummocky Area (East) and west of Earth Ponds 1 and 2.

Pits are same as 1975. Additional pit identified at geophysical anomaly W side of Concrete Pond 2.

Disturbed/materials-storage areas are generally similar to 1975. 1978 photo (fair to poor resolution) Key observations:

Graded area is similar to 1977, except not graded as extensively in Hummocky Area (East) and west of Burn Pits 1 and 2. Area around Earth Ponds 1 and 2 is not graded. Berm of Concrete Pad 2 not graded

Pit at geophysical anomaly on W side of Concrete Pond 2 is not identifiable as it was in 1977.

Much fewer disturbed/materials-storage areas identified than in 1977. 1979 photo (poor resolution) Key observations:

Graded areas very similar to those in 1978. Slightly more extensive in Hummocky Area (East).

Disturbed/materials-storage areas identified N of Former Dept. Demonstration Area, along SWMU boundary. Former excavation #4 area and berm of Concrete Pad 2 are evident and as vegetated. Disturbed/materials-storage areas, or structures, identified in Hummocky Area (East).

1980 photo (good resolution) Key observations:

Graded areas very similar to those in 1979. Former excavation #4 area and berm of Concrete Pad 2 are evident and as vegetated. Disturbed/materials-storage areas, or structures, identified along SWMU entry road

from Area I Road, N of Control Center area. Features at Hummocky Area (East) are similar to those in 1979.

1981 photo (fair resolution) Key observations:

Graded areas less extensive around Concrete Pad 2 area. Disturbed/materials-storage area identified W of Burn Pits 1 and 2, N of former

excavation #4.

Page 5: APPENDIX C Available Aerial Photographs Of AIBP For 1959 ... fileSSFL Area I Burn Pit site chronology, based on aerial photo analysis 1959 photo (fair resolution) Key observations:

Possible linear features (channel or pipelines?) trending south to from Control Center to Concrete Ponds 2 and 3.

1987 photo (fair resolution) Key observations:

Graded areas generally more extensive than in 1981, particularly around former excavations #1-#4. No grading in Hummocky Area (East).

Disturbed/materials-storage areas, or structures, identified on NW side of Burn Pits 1 and 2. Berm of Concrete Pad 2 is not vegetated. Structure identified in Hummocky Area (East) with well defined road leading west to unit boundary.

1989 photo (fair resolution) Key observations:

Grading more extensive than in 1987. Nearly all of western SMWU is graded. Most of eastern SWMU is graded. Limited grading east of Concrete Ponds 2 and 3 and at Hummocky Area (East).

Additional disturbed/materials-storage area identified in Hummocky Area (East). At least two structures present in the area.
