Appendix C : Geographic Area Codes
This list of is based on the USMARC Code List for Geographic Areas. Washington: Library of
Congress, 1994.
Codes are made up of seven characters each of which is either a lower-case letter or a
hyphen. The codes have been adapted to cover the counties of England, Scotland, and
Wales. These countries are treated as regions receiving one initial letter, not two, i.e. e-
uke- (not e-uk-en), e-uks- (not e-uk-st) and, e-ukw- (not e-uk-wl). This enables the
addition of two-letter codes to specify the counties within each of these countries. No such
distinction is made for Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland. The adapted codes are
listed separately below but are also interfiled in the main sequence.
