• Immediatelybringstudentsandemployeesindoors.Ifyouhaveevacuatedbecauseofafireorotherevent,enteringthebuildingmayputyouathigherrisk.Youneedtoassesseachsituationanduseyourbestjudgmentforeachincident.

• Getyour“GoKit”.• Provideforthesafetyofvisitorsinyourbuildingandaskthemtostay–notleave.Donot

driveorwalkoutdoors.• Haveatleastonetelephoneineachroom.Thereshouldbeawaytocommunicateamongall

roomswherepeoplearesheltering-in-place.• Selectaninteriorroomwiththefewestwindowsorvents.Selectseveralroomsifnecessary.

Classroomsmaybeusediftherearenowindowsorthewindowsaresealedandcannotbeopened.Largestorageclosets,utilityrooms,meetingrooms,andevenagymnasiumwithoutexteriorwindowsalsomaybeappropriate.

• Turnoffallthelights,closeandlockallwindowsanddoors.Ifyoucannotlockthedoor,trytoblockthedoorwithdesksandchairs.

• Ifyoucandososafely,getalloccupantsontothefloorandoutofthelineoffire.

• Ifyoucandososafely,movetothecoreareaofthebuildingandremainthereuntilthepolicetellyouitissafetoleave.Donotrespondtocommandsuntilyouarecertaintheyareissuedbyapoliceofficer.

Iftheshooterisinsideyourbuilding:

• Ifitispossibletoescapetheareasafelyandavoiddanger,dosobythenearestexitorwindow.Donottakeanythingwithyou.


• Asyouexitthebuilding,keepyourhandsaboveyourheadandlistenforinstructionsthatmaybegivenbypoliceofficers.Ifanofficerpointsafirearmatyou,makenomovementthatmaycausetheofficertomistakeyouractionsforathreat.Trytostaycalm.

• Ifyougetoutofthebuildinganddonotseeapoliceofficer,attempttocallthepolicebydialing911.Tellthedispatcheryournameandlocationandfollowtheirinstructions.

• Ifyouareunabletoescapethebuilding,moveoutofthehallwayandintoanofficeorclassroomandtrytolockthedoor.Ifthedoorwillnotlock,trybarricadingthedoorwithdesksandchairs.Lieontheflooror,ifpossibleunderadeskandremainsilent.Waitforthepolicetocomeandfindyou.

• Iftheshooterentersyourofficeorclassroom:

o Thereisnosetprocedureinthissituation.Ifpossible,call911andtalkwithapolicedispatcher.Ifyoucannotspeak,leavethephonelineopensothepolicecanhearwhatisgoingon.

o Usecommonsense.Ifyouarehidingandflightisimpossible,playingdeadmayalsobeaconsideration.

o Attemptingtoovercomethesuspectwithforceispotentiallyveryriskyandshouldonlybeconsideredinthemostextremecircumstances.Onlyyoucandecideifthisissomethingyoushoulddo.Ifyouoptforthisaction,youroddsarebestifyouactasagrouptoconfronttheattacker,butremembertheremaybemorethanoneshooter.
