Matthew Bruder Matthew Bruder...or Matt, as he is more commonly known, exemplifies many positive virtues as an Applause Award nominee. This Grade 6 student at Immaculate Conception School generously shares his time and talents with all students and staff. Whenever anyone, adults and children alike, needs assistance, Matt quickly and eagerly volunteers to lend a helping hand. His bubbly personality is readily evident as he always offers a cheerful “hello” to everyone he meets. Matt is a dedicated member of this year’s Spirit in Motion, enthusiastically organizing activities for students at recess. He reliably helps a JK student who is having difficulty adapting to a new school and morning routine. In the classroom, Matt is a polite individual who regularly shares his positive attitude, responsible work ethic and sense of humour. He easily gets along with all of his classmates and teachers, giving his best effort in all activities. ICS is blessed to have Matt Bruder as a member of our school community.

Sage Martin Sage Martin is a key student in our family at Immaculate Conception School in Formosa. Since beginning at our school this September, Sage has demonstrated many character virtues through his words and actions. Sage is often found helping students and stepping up to be a nurturing grade 4 student to those younger than himself. He is polite and always asks how he can help; and when he says he can help you can always rely on him to be there. He helps kindergarten students daily, he is a dedicated bus buddy and is happy to help throughout the school. His responsibility and reliability are great strengths for Sage.

There isn’t a day that passes that he doesn’t walk into the school with a smile. He even greets students with excitement on the bus, who have a hard time leaving their parents at the bus stop. He has a genuine concern for others and a heart that extends to all staff and students at our school. Sage is a selfless giver.

No matter what the day brings, Sage comes to school ready to learn and is fully engaged in class. He perseveres through his own work and then works to help others. Sage is truly a model student at ICS. He never asks for credit, but credit is what he deserves.

Holy Family School Hanover

Sheldon Maifrini Sheldon Maifrini is a Grade 8 student who has put forth a consistent effort by getting involved with his school and church community this year. You will often find Sheldon helping with the Holy Family Breakfast Club in the morning by setting up and taking down tables. He arrives early at about 8:00 am and helps to get things organized for the many students who come to Breakfast Club. He is always the first one to be asked to help with the technological equipment when it is needed for assemblies and presentations. Sheldon is very proud of his abilities to work with technology and is more than willing to share what he knows or to teach others about the technology.

Sheldon has worked consistently at school this year by putting more effort into his assignments and completing his projects with greater confidence. He took on a major role in our school play, Have Ark Will Travel. He displayed his role with great confidence and shared his sense of humour while he rode his scooter around the gym in the role of the dove. Without being asked, Sheldon offered his assistance to help with the take down of the sets for the play which demonstrated great commitment to the play and a willingness to get involved.

Sheldon is an active member of our Church Youth group. He regularly shares his talent of playing his guitar at Masses and youth retreats. He also participates regularly during a quiet prayer time that is offered early in the morning at the church, before he heads to Breakfast Club, requiring him to get an early start on his day.

Sheldon you are very deserving of this award. The staff and students at Holy Family School appreciate all that you do to make our school community a better place. Congratulations!

Christ has no body now but yours… no hands, no feet on earth but yours...

Autumn Colwell This award goes to students who demonstrate leadership - quiet leadership - the type that can sometimes go unnoticed, but is always present, consistent and appreciated. I have had the pleasure of Autumn’s company for two consecutive years, first in Grade Five and now again in Grade Six. During this time, I have marvelled at how Autumn positively impacts those around her by just being herself. Although I am her teacher, I am always amazed how much I learn from her at any given moment, on any given day.

I learn Patience from Autumn. It’s no secret that Autumn watches over her little brother Ryan, making sure he gets on the right bus at the end of the day, checking in on him during recesses and making sure he’s OK while here at school. She also shows patience with herself in her own learning, never giving up and always putting her best effort into any task given. This has lead to great success for Autumn in her own school work and learning.

I learn genuine Encouragement from Autumn. She demonstrates leadership in how she encourages others to persevere and stick with a task. Autumn is very artistic - it would be easy for her to boast of her talents in this area. Instead, she uses her own talent to encourage others about how to improve their work or try new techniques. Anyone who sits near Autumn has the benefit of her encouragement, regardless of the subject.

From Autumn, I learn how to be Compassionate and Caring. These two virtues come so naturally to Autumn that I really don’t think she recognizes this as significant or as part of being a leader - someone who leads so easily by example. When a classmate is struggling, hurt or feeling down - Autumn responds to them with genuine caring and compassion. Anyone on the receiving end of her care will undoubtedly be touched in a positive way. She does this consistently and with anyone in need - no boundaries. For these reasons, Autumn has been chosen for this award. My life has been blessed because of her company these past two years - and I am grateful. Anyone who has had the pleasure of Autumn’s company knows that this award is well deserved!
