Apple iPod touch (Gen 4) First-Look Review By Jen Edwards , Brighthand.com Contributor | 9/13/2010 The fourth-generation iPod touch is the latest version of Apple's handheld computer with added features, such as the speedy A4 processor, front and rear cameras, FaceTime video chat, iOS 4.1, and a high resolution Retina display. It is currently available starting at $230 for a version with 8 GB of storage, $300 for the 32 GB version, and $400 for the 64 GB one. I've only had this device a few days, not time enough to for me to fully test it out. I'll follow this preliminary review up with a full review in the coming days. BUILD & DESIGN The new iPod touch is beautifully designed, as all Apple products are, with sleek lines and modern details. Unlike the iPhone 4, it isn't at all boxy. It is remarkably thin and light, with strongly tapered edges. If you use the device "naked" you may not even remember it's in your pocket -- it really is that small. With smartphones, they sometimes seem quite light... and then you notice that the battery is still in the box, so you are immediately disappointed with a light phone that almost instantly becomes a heavy "brick" in your pocket.. That isn't the case here; the iPod touch is sealed so it comes fully assembled with the battery inside and it weighs just a few ounces.

Apple iPod touch (Gen 4) First-Look ReviewBy Jen Edwards, Brighthand.com Contributor | 9/13/2010 The fourth-generation iPod touch isthe latestversion of Apple's handheld computer with added features, such as the speedy A4 processor, front and rear cameras, FaceTime video chat, iOS 4.1, and a high resolution Retina display. It is currently available starting at $230 for a version with 8 GB of storage, $300 for the 32 GB version, and $400 for the 64 GB one.I've only had this device a few days, not time enough to for me to fully test it out. I'll follow this preliminary review up with a full review in the coming days.

BUILD & DESIGNThe new iPod touch is beautifully designed, as all Apple products are, with sleek lines and modern details. The build quality is excellent, as you would expect from Apple. There is no creaking, bending, or flexing of any kind.DisplayThe new Retina display on the iPod touchis absolutely gorgeous. I haven't had the opportunity to see it side-by-side with a new iPhone 4 yet, so it's hard to make direct comparisons. I can say that it is vastly superior to my old iPod touch. It is extremely sharp and clear, and much more readable outside in bright sunlight. My photos look better than ever before, and video does too -- amazingly sharp and clear. If you have an older iPod touch, you'll see a huge difference in the display -- the new Retina technology represents a great improvement. This improvement isn't really all that surprising, considering the screen resolution has gone from 320x480 to 640x960, but the displaysize hasn't changed-- it's still 3.5 inches.KeyboardThe iPod touch doesn't have a physical keyboard, instead relying on a virtual keyboard for text entry. It works well, but of course I have long experience with the old iPod touch so there's nothing new for me here. I can say that typing is easier with the newmodel because it is fast enough to make the built-in word completion utility a pleasure to use instead of a pain.Other Buttons & ControlsThe front of the device seems to be all screen, because it is all black. This differs from my original first-generationmodel, which has a display that appears lighter when it is off, like a calculator. The Home button is centered below the screen.A low-res camerafor use with the FaceTime video-conferencing appis centered over the top of the display, while the main image/video camera is on the top left corner of the the back of the device. The power button is on the top right, the volume controls are on the upper left side of the device, and the headphone jack and charge/sync port are on the bottom edge. The external speaker is just to the left of the charge/sync port. It works fairly well, with nice volume, but of course the sound isn't nearly as good as what you get listening with headphones. For games and sharing a new tune with your friends it's plenty good enough, but you won't want to use it all the time.Since there aren't yet any cases available for the new iPod touch, I am using an old Proporta dual skin silicone case to protect my new device. It workstolerably well, but it is just a bit too big. That makes it easy to see that the new touch is just a little smaller in all dimensions, most notably width and thickness.Apple iPod touch (Gen 4) First-look Review: Part II

PERFORMANCEThe new AppleiPod touch is blazingly fast -- everything just works, and works quickly, as soon as you launch an app. This is a noticeable improvement over theearliest models in this series, which can be very slow, depending on the app. This is also my first experience with the latest version of Apple operating system, and it's nice that iOS 4.1 is preloaded on the device so that there is no need to download and install it myself. As you can imagine for a hardware and software reviewer, I have a lot of apps. Folders are a great addition, and have really helped me organize the home screen of my device. Multitasking works well too, allowing me to jump from app to app with just a couple of taps.WirelessWi-Fi wireless networking works great, with excellent signal strength and none of the annoying "incorrect password" issues that show up almost daily on my previous iPod touch. My old touch often gives me errors when using it with my home network, requiring me to type in the password almost every day. Nothing like that occurs with the new model, and I'm quite pleased with its performance. When it comes to Bluetooth, things went just as well. I had no trouble pairing it with my Apple Wireless Keyboard. It's ironic, considering that I used a Landware GoType and then a Stowaway Bluetooth folding keyboard with many of my Palm OS Handheld over the years, but being able to use a wireless keyboard with the iPod touch turns it into a real (pocketable) productivity tool.Productivity and EntertainmentWhether it'sgetting things done or having some fun, it's all about the apps. The new iPod touch comes with Calendar, Contacts, and Notes built in, and you can sync with Outlook, an Exchange Server, or Google's online servicesif you like. You'll also find Calculator, Clock, and Voice Memo apps, along with Weather and Maps. Photos, Videos, Camera, YouTube, and FaceTime round out the applications included with the device. And if you want to add more music, video, and apps, of course you'll find the iTunes Store and the App Store. There are no games preloaded on the iPod touch, but there are plenty to download from the App Store, both free and paid. The new Game Center makes gaming a much more social experience, with the ability to add friends, earn achievements, and play online with others. This will be tested extensively for the full review.CameraI've only had the new iPod touch for a couple of days now, and since I'm on the road I haven't been able to try it out fully as of yet. I havetaken a couple of rather hasty shots in my hotel room. Viewed on the screen of the iPod touch, they look OK -- good enough to capture something quickly that you might otherwise have missed, but certainly not good enough to replace a standalone digital camera.I will be testing the camera and its video capture abilities much more extensively in the final review.Battery LifeIt's too soon for me for me to render a judgment on this model, but I've never had any problems with battery life on Apple products, and I believe the same will likely be true with the new iPod touch. However, I have some slight concerns, because the battery almost completely drained overnight the first day I had it. I have been using it quite a bit since then (the last three days) and the battery meter has barely budged -- I haven't even unpacked my charger yet.At this point I suspect that was a fluke or an aberration; when I first connected the new touch to my laptop late Friday afternoon, iTunes reported that it was almost fully charged. I of course spent the next little while adding apps and a substantial portion of my music library to the device, and unplugged it shortly thereafter. When I woke up Saturday morning, the battery was almost dead, but I haven't had to charge it since.Title of Page

PRELIMINARY CONCLUSIONObviously I can'tdraw any final conclusions onthe newAppleiPod touch after just a few days with the device, but at this point my impressions are almost overwhelmingly positive. The new display is stunning, and while the external speaker is a little underpowered, it's great to have one and makes playing games without headphones a lot more fun. Being able to use it with the Apple Wireless Keyboard means that the touch can be much more than a simple entertainment device if you want it to be.My only concern isthe battery issue mentioned above. The fourth-generation iPod touch undeniably represents a significant upgrade from my first-generation model. Whether or not the new features like the camera with video capture and the new Retina display make it a worthy upgrade from asecond- or third-generation device is a more difficult question to answer at this point, and depends a great deal on your budget. If you don't already have an iPodtouch and can't stand the thought of signing a contract with AT&T in order to get the iPhone, the new model is a great all-around entertainment and productivity device.Stay tuned for the full review here on Brighthand.

Overall Hardware Impression

I am not going to spend much time on the dimensions of this bad boy as everyone and their dog knows what the iconoclastic iPod touch looks like. Though for the sake of accuracy this is a 4.4" x 2.3" x 0.28" which weighs in at a mere 3.56 oz. The back of the iPod touch 4 is classic apple chrome though now it is much like new iPhone as it is flat and not curved; the bottom has the classic iPod 30-pin port and your headphone jack. On one side edge there is a dedicated up and down volume buttons with a "power" button on the top (though the power button as been relocated from the top right to the top left corner). There is also a small microphone and speaker integrated into the body of the gen 4. The actual front of the iPod touch 4 is obviously dedicated to the razor sharp capacitive touch screen and has a small "home" button towards the bottom. This bad boy is slightly shorter than the gen 3; it is also noticeably lighter than the previous iteration. Hell is even slightly narrower than the previous svelte model and is now a PERFECT fit for your hands. The iPod touch 4 really is small and lightweight enough that it is not fatiguing to use all day long; YET it still has a visceral feel to it which belies its light weight and feels extremely robust. I am not sure how they did it but this lightweight iPod touch 4 feels a heck of a lot more sturdy than my Apple iPod classic does... even though the classic is a veritable BRICK in comparison. Hell even though it weighs less and is smaller the 4G feels better and sturdier than my generation 3 iPod touch! Bloody amazing. That is the overall dimensions and look and feel and if Apple had left the hardware basically the same it would have been a nice, if a bit small, REvision of the iPod touch gen. 3 design. It is not however a mere revision as while the iPod touch 4 may have a similar if smaller look and feel to the third generation and it may share the same NAME as the older version it is a totally new beast. Everything from the software to the hardware to the screen is new and improved in BIG ways.

iPod touch 4 (left) is slightly wider but thinner than the previous generation.

iPod touch 4 (right) with a whopping 640x960 pixels now has twice the resolution of the previous model. I've already mentioning its new svelte size so the next biggest thing, and heck you could argue THE biggest new feature, is the screen. Apple calls this screen a Retina Display screen and god is it ever a great gift for your eyes. Let's face it, this is a Personal MEDIA Player and not just a mere "iPod" so you are going to be spending a LOT of time looking at the screen. This 3.5" screen is gorgeous as it not only has a twice the resolution of the previous model at a whopping 640x960 but also has TWICE the DPI at 326. It is a bloody awesome screen which needs to SEEN and USED to truly be appreciated. With that being said it is NOT the same screen as the one on the new iPhone so its viewing angles while good are not quiet as good as the iPhone's. At a even more basic level, it still is a frickin' GLOSSY screen which means it not only is still a finger print magnet but ALSO reflects a lot of light in bright conditions (like when you are outside) so there is that minor caveat. These are par for the course with Apple and you either learn to work around the glossy aspect of the screen... or you don't buy an Apple iPod. The next big new feature is the DUAL built in cameras. On the back, you have one which is capable of shooting 4:3 format 960 x 720 pictures and 720p video also with a resolution of 960 x 720. On the FRONT you have another LOWER resolution camera which can only shoot VGA quality video (640x480) and 640x480 quality still images. These cameras are not exactly high megapixel cameras and in testing I did notice that even though they have a F2.4 lens they out and out SUCK at indoor shots; though this is pretty much par for the course with these mini cameras. In other words, don't expect to get great (or even decent) shots from either under all lighting conditions, but they ARE better than nothing the generation 3 touch offered and for video calls they are more than good enough. To be fair, when you have good lighting conditions the end result is a very decent "camera phone" quality picture. Hopefully, the next revision will come with TWO cameras which are at least capable of a measly 1-megapixel resolution and maybe even that "new" invention called a "FLASH"! With that being said these cameras combined with the built in speaker, the built in microphone and the built in WIFI coupled with a simple little Skype app means you can EASILY convert your iPod touch 4 into a "poor man's iPhone"... sans contract. When looked at from this point of view the cameras are a nice feature. To be blunt these ARE a nice feature, just one that feels a little rushed and needs more time to be perfected. Hopefully, beefier cameras will lead the list of reasons why we should all rush and get the NEXT iPod touch, like the screen and other features make this a "must buy" for Apple fans... and many other consumer groups too! In addition to all those wonderful tweaks, Apple also took the time to upgrade the WiFi from 802.11g to 802.11n. This is a HUGE performance boost that should make downloading from YouTube the Internet and even your home network much, much faster! Also unlike the iPod Touch 3G, the new 4G also has Bluetooth AD2P support, so if you have a wireless STEREO headset for your new iPhone, it will work on your new touch 4! I am not a fond lover of Bluetooth but this newer standard is certainly a great upgrade and can actually see it making Bluetooth a viable alternative to other short range wireless standards. In other words, it's another nice tweak in a growing list of amazing new features this new 4G Touch boasts! The other nice little tweak will put a smile on your gaming face and that is the new 3 axis gyro. This should make gaming even more precise and much more fun!

iPod touch 4 now has 2.4Ghz 802.11n radio to improve video streaming and web surfing performance. If all the above wasn't enough to make you go "WOW" the next improvement should. Apple didn't just call it a day at upgrading the screen when it comes to hardware updates, they ALSO upgraded the processor to their new "A4" chip. This is the same chip as they one which powers the iPhone and the iPad, though the amount of RAM the iPod touch 4 has is only half the iPhone has (256MB vs. 512MB) though it is the same amount as the iPad. It is a Apple custom chip fabbed by Samsung (45nm) which basically is a customized ARM processor (how much Apple customizes it is unknown). In other words is pretty darn fast, yet uses very LITTLE power while doing it. The end result is even though this bad boy has a better screen and a more powerful processor it actually gets better battery life. According to Apple, these power savings net the new touch a battery life of 40 hours for music and 7 while watching video. This is certainly better than the previous generations 30 and 6! In testing these official numbers are a little on the high side as I was "only" able to get about 38 hours of music and about 6 and half of video before the battery needed recharging. This certainly isn't bad as with the same music and video I was only able to get a little over 26.4 hours for music and 5.3 hours for video from my generation 3! Though to be fair and impartial, all the increased battery life is not solely due to power savings of the new components. Even though the body is smaller and the overall weight is lower, Apple somehow managed to cram in a bigger 930 mAh (3.44 watt hours) battery compared to the previous generations 789 mAh (2.92 watt hours). Honestly, the "why" once again doesn't matter as the end result is the same: LONGER play time! User Interface and Software

The user interface is of course classic Apple iPod touch, though it is now iOS version 4.1 (in a very nice move older gen touch's also can get iOS 4). To say this is a refined and smooth running, albeit extremely limited, "operating system" is an understatement. Everything works smoothly and works will and a lot this silky smooth user experience is do to the fact it now can multitask. This doesn't sound like such a big deal on what is Personal Media Player, but it really does add a nice layer of polish to everything. At this point in time, very few people don't know how the TOUCH works as it is extremely simple: you touch the screen to input commands. Of course it is multi-touch capable but what was interesting was I did notice that the newer iPod touch 4 is slightly more responsive and less "stupid" than its predecessor. This biggest noticeable difference (besides in gaming) is in the virtual keyboard. While the layout has not changed it was a whole heck of a lot more accurate than the older version AND now has not only spell checker but auto replace. You still have to be very ZEN about it and not over think it but for "typing" in URLS in the built in Safari web browser it did go much smoother. Also the notepad feature now does result in legible notes to myself instead of the gibberish I usually got with the touch 3G! Simply marvelous. The actual new app features of iOS 4 on the iPod touch can be best summed up in two phrased: FaceTime and Social Networking. FaceTime basically turns your fourth generation iPod touch into a video enabled internet phone. Yes, you can really talk to others and have them see you much as if you were using Skype and a Web Camera... just without the computer. Social Networking can be broken into two new sections: Game Center and Ping. Ping is a new social networking feature added to iTunes. It allows you to tell your friends what you are listening to and what you have recently purchase, and see what THEY have listened to and purchased. The jury is still out on how useful this feature is going to be; personally I think its going to be as "useful" as DRM'ed music. In other words it's a boondoggle waiting to happen as it is a privacy black hole in the making. Game Center is a bit more difficult to explain as it is not really a clearing house or folder for you're your games (as games still load their own icons on to your touch's desktop); rather it is Apples social gaming network. You log in to Game Center where you can invite friends, play online games and the like... as well as buy new games. In other words its basically Apple's version of Xbox Live, Sony's Playstation network all dumb'ed down for this lower horse power gaming system. Will it fly... who knows. Personally, I will stick to the Apple iTunes apps store for my iPod touch games and if I want to play FarmVille'esque games... I will be sure to check in for a full physical evaluation first as I must have suffered a traumatic brain injury! Another new feature of iOS is the inclusion of the Genius option. Much like the Genius portion of iTunes this little app will watch and record what YOU like and then make recommendations on future music/video purchases. In a nut shell, this means you will with time be able to find new artists that should suit your personal "tastes" without spending a lot on "unknowns". Very nice. The last feature iOS 4.1 brings to the table is being able to rent TV shows via iTunes at the "low" price of 99 cents per episode. Yeah, 99 cents a pop IS expensive and slightly ridiculous but then again without flash abilities and the walled garden the touch experience is built upon... its probably about as good as Steve Jobs will let you get. Things like this is why jail breaking is getting so darn popular and legal in some places!

The release of iTunes 10 coincides the that of iPod touch 4 and iPod nano 6. To actually load content on your new iPod touch 4, you can of course download it via WiFi directly to your brand new toy, but for all the goodies you ALREADY own (say non iTunes MP3's for example) you are going to have to use iTunes as the iPod touch 4 is not seen as just another USB storage device. To be blunt I hate iTunes and everything it represents as Apple is TELLING me what I HAVE to use in order to get my files off my hard drive and on to my iPod touch 4. For anyone who doesn't like iTunes... iTunes 10 will be even worse than you remember it. Heck, even some die hard Apple fans hate the new look and feel of it. I am not going to waste much time on it, as it is just more of the "same old same old" just with an even worse layout and colour scheme. This has always been the biggest negative to iPods and why I rarely chose them over the competition like Cowon. Music Performance

When it comes to music and iPod touch 4, things have gotten a tad better and the sound is slightly more precise when listening to lossless formats, but if you are serious about your music you still will need an amp to drive your high end cans. This is pretty much par for the course with Apple, but with "fun" IEMs like Westone 1s or better the music is slightly improved with the new generation 4. When I say improved, I mean it's slightly more crisp, clear and precise. The difference is not night and day but high end jazz, blues or anything Kesha or the girls of SNSD probably haven't even heard of does sound slightly better and closer to what my Cowon products output or even what my main audio rig can do. I know what my Westone UM2s can do when paired with a great DAC and amp and while the iPod touch 4 is getting better it still is not there yet. Please don't get me wrong iPod's have always been decent music players with decent DACs, but they are not an audiophile device by any stretch. They don't colour the music unless you turn on the built in equalizer which is a good thing but they still are lacking compared to Cowon Audio devices. On the EQ side of things not much has changed as the usual suspects are still there. It still doesn't give you enough granular control over the music IF you want to disregard what the sound engineers WANTED you to hear but it is more than good enough for what the intended consumer niche wants. Once again if you want real control over your music you probably are either looking at non-Apple products or have a good portable amp already! Sadly unlike the music clarity side of things, the same can NOT be said of the included headphones. If you are serious about music you wont even take them out of their wrapper and just throw them away. They suck and that is putting it as POLITELY as I can. Even if you are not serious about music, do yourself a favor and throw them out anyways. Your ears will thank you later in life as you won't lose as much hearing as you will these nasty little buds. Overall I'd rate my music experience with my Westone IEM's on the gen. 3 touch as a 6 while the new touch would get a 7, my Cowon D+ gets a 8.5 and my real audio setup gets a 10 out of 10. Video Performance

While music playing abilities has always been decent solutions with Apple iPod touch 4's, their video playing abilities have always been... shall we say "less than optimal". To be fair, the third generation iPod touch is a decent video player and does a moderately good job at it but it is still not exactly a great option. It just has too low a resolution screen, which would not be a big deal IF it wasn't also glossy. When you combine a SMALL glossy touch screen with low resolution the end result is better than watching an etch a sketch... but not by much. Needless to say I'm not a fan of the gen 3's video ability and always considered it an "after thought" or "value added" bonus feature and not a really useful feature. Luckily, the iPod touch 4's high resolution screen makes for a pretty darn good experience. Even watching lower resolution YouTube videos is now enjoyable and watching movies is actually a viable solution for long distance flights where the in flight movie is the modern equivalent of Dances With Wolves meets Water World! The only caveat worth mentioning is the speaker is still a joke and you really need to wear you ear phones. Though to be fair, the built in speaker is a heck of a lot less muddy and muffled sounding than it is with the iPod touch 3G.

iPod touch 4 makes watching video on the 3.5" scren a much more pleasant experience as image clarity is greatly improved. Though, the built-in speaker output level is still low compared to iPhone 4. As an added bonus, video loads noticeably faster on the iPod touch 4 than on the 3 thanks to the 802.11n capabilities of this new bad boy. Heck, to be honest, everything is more peppy on the 4 than the 3 with even the touch screen being much more responsive. The end result, is a much more fluid experience. Apple really did take the time to polish and refine the total audio / video experience with this model and it DOES show. More importantly, I am sure a lot of people will be like me and not only notice but be highly appreciative of these improvements. Overall you are still going to be looking at a glossy 3.5" screen, but you wont feel foolish for doing so. I would rate the generation 3's video experience at about a 5 and the new gen 4 at about a 7. If only they would make something SMALLER than the iPad with a kick ass display, that was bigger than iPod touch 4G, it would probably be the ultimate portable media player! Gaming Experience

I've saved the best for last as while the new iPod touch generation 4 is very good at music and video it is down right great at gaming! To put it bluntly the new touch is down right FUN to use as a game platform. This is because it has a great high resolution screen, great precision and even decent battery life for something so small. Since I now own a gen 4 iPod touch I certainly wouldn't even bother getting a PSP, DSi or any other hand held gaming device as this little bad boy has me covered. Games like Real Racing, Asphalt 5, Fastlane Street Racing, HAVOC, Bruce Lee Dragon Warrior and some others are just plain awesome ways to kill time while waiting for your bus, your delayed plan or even that long ass road trip where you are stuck in the back seat with your younger immature siblings. As with video, games loaded noticeably quicker than they do on the generation 3 iPod touch, but they also seemed to be smoother flowing. It may be just psychological but I KNOW for a fact I was better at Asphalt on the iPod touch 4; even though I had played it longer on the gen 3! Most likely this is because of then new gyro's the Touch G4 sports or maybe it is just the screen but the new version just is so much more fun to use its not even in the same league as the iPod touch 3G. Either way, I have to admit that using the gyroscopes to control your car/avatar/etc and not having "real" buttons does take a bit of getting used to but the experience is so smooth and easy the learning curve is extremely short. After only a couple minutes in a game I never played before, I had it down pat and was getting my game on like I had been using it for years. Hell, the end result is what I consider to be one of the best casual gaming experiences I have ever had. Bloody awesome is all I have to say as this little bad boy really has changed my idea of what portable gaming should look, act and feel like!

Games with Retina Display support starts to appear on apps store. Here shows the high-res version of Asphalt 5.

N.O.V.A. is another game that shows full potential of Retina Display. The only major caveat I have with gaming on the iPod touch 4 is battery life. Much like the gen 3 I only got about 10% of the estimated "music" battery life so expect to only be able to game for 3.5 to 4 hours before needing to recharge. To be fair, this IS better than the gen 3's which gives me more like 2.5 to 3 hours worth of gaming. This is with the screen very bright so I consider this to be a "worst case scenario". If I wanted to get my game on for 5 to 6 hrs straight I'm sure I could do it by cranking the brightness way, way down and still get a very good game play experience. The other minor issue is the iPod touch 4G does get warm with extended gaming usage. The metal casing doesn't get HOT per say but you definitely can feel the A4 processor dumping its heat into the case. Recap

Honestly, there is not much to NOT be impressed with this 4th generation iteration. Apple really has taken the time to upgrade darn near every part of the new model. From the ultra crisp screen, to the more powerful processor, to the improved battery life, everything really IS better than the older iPod touch. Heck, its even smaller and lighter weight than previous generations! With that being said, there are a few minor annoyances with this model. The biggest of these is the high gloss screen, yes it is so super glossy that you are going to get anywhere from some to a LOT of reflections off it. The other minor annoyance is yes, it certainly does have a "HD" camera but that translates into a mere 0.7 of a mega pixels. So while it is technically "High Definition", it is NOT true 1080p HD! However, when you add in all the positives and subtract the few minor negatives, the result is a great personal media player that has the horse power, fun factor and longevity to keep you entertained literally all darn day long with a bevy of options! If you are into casual gaming this lil' guy can game thanks to its high resolution screen and kick ass processor. If you are into music, this guy can play music with its very decent DAC; hell this guy can even be a good video player thanks to its killer screen. This really is one of the few iPod devices which have not only impressed me but actually made me a semi-convert. I can live with having to use iTunes if it means getting all these amazing power packed features. Highly recommended if you are looking for a new media player with some bloody amazing features! I own it 22 I want it 19 Not for me 3VerdictFor better or worse, the iPod touch is clearly the iPhone's baby brother. Like most products that roll out of Apple, the touch shows the love of committed designers, hardware engineers and usability experts. While it may not be the slam dunk we were hoping for, it is an unquestionably cool product that continues Apple's legacy of sleek, innovative designTypical price269 Search for latest Apple iPod touch pricesMP3 Players Latest MP3 Player reviews Best MP3 Players Popular MP3 Players MP3 Player videos Compare MP3 PlayersCNET UK Recommends New iPod shuffle: Four great alternatives More round-upsGood Wireless functions Design Interface Browser Bright, clear screenBad Fingerprints on the screen Limited memory if you're planning to watch a lot of videoIf you find yourself dazzled by the Web, video and music capabilities of Apple's iPhone but can't stomach the contract commitment, the iPod touch might be just what you're looking for. Offered in 8GB (199) and 16GB (269) capacities from the Apple store -- delivered by the end of September -- the iPod touch is a premium-priced device with an attractive set of features for a midsize portable video player. Still, the touch's limited storage capacity makes it a difficult choice when held up to higher capacity products like the iPod classic or Archos 605 WiFi.DesignThe touch measures a slim and pocketable 62 by 110 by 8mm, with an all-metal-and-glass design that feels as expensive as it looks. Because nothing will ruin a portable video player faster than a gouge across its screen, we're happy to see that the face of the iPod touch uses the same scratch-resistant glass found on the iPhone. Most users will still want to buy a protective case, however, since the touch feels a little fragile and the back is covered with the glossy, scratch-prone, smudge-loving chrome exterior common to most iPods.

The touch shares more features with the iPhone (left), although it is the younger sibling of the iPod classic (right)There are only two physical buttons on the touch: a button on the face of the player used for calling up the main menu and a screen deactivation button found on the top-left edge of the case. The touch is controlled largely using an icon-based touchscreen navigation menu nearly identical to the iPhone's but with greater emphasis placed on music, photo and video playback. The two design details that distinguish the iPod touch from the iPhone are the headphone jack and volume controls. While the iPhone surprised us with its difficult, recessed headphone jack, the 3.5mm headphone jack on the iPod touch runs flush with the case and accepts any standard minijack headphone connection. In the absence of dedicated volume control buttons, the touch gives users the ability to bring up an onscreen volume slider by double-clicking the main menu button. The same volume screen offers controls for playing, pausing and skipping through tracks. When it comes down to it, the iPod touch's most unique selling point is not its feature set but its interface. You can find products that offer more features, as well as higher quality audio and video performance but you won't find any other product that can match the feeling you get using the iPod touch interface. In the absence of jetpacks or flying cars, the futuristic novelty of zooming photos with a pinch of the finger or flying through your music collection in Cover Flow is difficult to quantify into a bullet point but it is probably the most justifiable reason to invest in the touch.

FeaturesThe iPod touch draws 99 per cent of its features from the iPhone. While iPhone owners have zero incentive for buying the touch, the rest of us now have a way to get our hands on many of the iPhone's features without a costly O2 contract. The bad news is that the iPod touch does away with more than just the iPhone's phone capabilities -- it also gives up POP/IMAP email, built-in speakers, microphone, camera, Bluetooth and a handful of widget applications such as stock monitoring and weather forecasting.

Through a Wi-Fi connection, you can use the touch to browse, preview and download music via the iTunes Wi-Fi Music StoreRemaining features such as a Safari Web browser, YouTube video portal, photo viewer, music player, video player and iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store still place the iPod touch on the cutting edge for portable video players, however. In fact, at the time of this writing, the only product that can even compete with the iPod touch's combination of a Wi-Fi-enabled Web browser, wireless music store, widescreen video playback, photo viewer and audio player is the Archos 605 WiFi.One of the few notable features that put the iPod touch ahead of the iPhone is the ability to output video and photos to a television using an optional Apple AV cable, Universal Dock or qualifying third-party video accessory. Another advantage the iPod touch offers over the iPhone is the ability to manually manage music and video content in lieu of setting up automatic content syncing rules within iTunes. We are a little disappointed that the iPod touch is the only iPod that does not support a generic USB storage mode but we doubt many users will be upset by this.Audio format support is unchanged from previous iPods. The touch supports standard and purchased AAC, as well as MP3, Audible, WAV, AIFF and Apple Lossless. Video format support is likewise unaltered from the H.264/MP4 files playable on 5G iPods, as well as the third-generation iPod nano and the iPod classic. The touch supports video resolutions up to 640x480 pixels at 30 frames per second.

Minus a few features, the Safari Web browser found on the iPod touch is more or less the same great browser found on the iPhone. For instance, without the iPhone's email application or phone capabilities, email addresses and phone numbers found on Web pages will no longer launch email or dialling options. Web-based email, such as Gmail or Yahoo mail, work fine in Safari, but without the ability to copy and paste text, manually entering in email addresses found on the Web can be frustrating. Just like Safari on the iPhone, Flash-based Web objects are still disabled, including embedded video players and music players. We'd love to see embedded Flash support in the otherwise fabulous browser. Whether video content from sites like DailyMotion or Viddler or music from Web radio sites like Pandora or Slacker, embedded Flash media content is a big part of the Internet media experience. Despite these few limitations, using Safari on a small mobile device like the iPod touch is still fun and useful. The intelligent touchscreen keyboard and multiple browser window management are a big plus. Both the iPod touch and iPhone allow users to browse, preview, purchase and download music from the new iTunes Wi-Fi music store, which will open in the UK in time for the launch of the touch. The store is limited strictly to music downloads -- no movies, TV shows, podcasts or games -- at least, not yet. You'll have to hop onto an available Wi-Fi Internet connection to take advantage of the wireless music store but once connected, you can search for any artist, album or song in the iTunes catalogue, as well as browse by genre, top sellers, featured artists and new releases. Store purchases require you to enter your iTunes password as a security measure. Once the download is complete, the song is immediately available to listen to and will transfer to your computer's iTunes music library the next time you sync the device. The feature seemed to work without any kinks when we tried it in the US. Even interrupted downloads picked up once a Wi-Fi connection is re-established. Complaining about the iPod touch's lack of FM radio or voice-recording features feels like complaining about a Porsche's lack of cup holders. Still, there are some missing features on the iPod touch that we would have enjoyed. High-capacity SD memory card expansion is at the top of our list of most-wanted features for the touch. We could easily forgive any portable video player's limited built-in memory capacity if the option of SD memory card expansion was available (the Archos 405 or Creative Zen are perfect examples of video players that give us the option to expand).PerformancePutting aside the touch's sleek design, futuristic interface and innovative feature set, the quality of its audio and video playback rank only slightly above average. The iPod touch reportedly uses the same audio chipset as the iPhone, but a different one to the iPod classic. The touch offers good audio quality, but not the stellar audio we were hoping for in an expensive product.

The audio issue is compounded by Apple's long-standing history of preventing iPod users from defining their own custom EQ settings. Apple's 20 built-in equalisation presets are handy but there's just no substitute for rolling your own five-band EQ curve. With the touch's emphasis on video playback, it would have been especially useful to have a surround-sound emulation effect similar to the Cowon A2's or Sony NWZ-S610's. We've heard some complaints about the iPod touch's video performance but we found the overall quality to be good. Viewing angles are less than great, producing some colour and contrast shifting from even slight tilting. We also found that the glossy glass screen kicks back a lot of glare. Still, despite the common complaints, the touch is unquestionably the most video-worthy iPod yet. With a battery life rated at 22 hours for music playback and five hours for video, the touch should offer more than enough time to get through a few flights or a roundtrip commute.ConclusionsWe think the iPod touch is a great product with lots to offer, but its premium price tag and limited capacity should give some shoppers pause. And while we're being picky, we also want the iPhone's notepad application, iTunes game support and stereo Bluetooth transmission. The ability to use the touch as an external storage drive like the iPod nano and iPod classic would also be a plus. Don't assume that Apple's most expensive iPod is the best solution for your needs. If you're planning on watching a lot of video, high-capacity products such as the iPod classic or Archos 605 WiFi will allow you to load entire seasons of your favourite TV shows. Also bear in mind that if you're not around an available Wi-Fi network, features such as the Safari Web browser, iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store and YouTube video portal won't mean much at all. While the iPod touch may not be the slam dunk we were hoping for, it is an unquestionably cool product that continues Apple's legacy of sleek, innovative design.Available from AdvancedMP3Players.Additional editing by Shannon Doubleday

Gyro + Accelerometer. Smooth moves.iPod touch just learned some new moves. It now includes a built-in three-axis gyroscope. Multi-Touch.Control at your fingertips. When you put your finger on iPod touch, how does it just start doing what you want it to do? Its a chain reaction, really. The Multi-Touch display layers a protective shield over a capacitive panel that senses your touch using electrical fields. It then transmits that information to the Retina display below it. So you can glide through albums with Cover Flow, flick through photos and enlarge them with a pinch, zoom in and out on a section of a web page, and control game elements precisely.

Customer ReviewsGreat anatomy tool for spatial learners, but needs update by UBSDMstud I just got this app today, and after studying the cervical and brachial plexus, this app is fantastic to understand the placement of nerves and vasculature quickly. You can quiz yourself on the slide your looking at any time, and continue to quiz yourself by selecting other slides. The quiz will also ask you to identify your programmed pins as well as theirs, a helpful feature. The one thing I've noticed, which seems impossible, is that they left out certain muscles, i.e. the subclavius and the pectoralis minor. Overall, a great app for spatial learners looking to save time, but an update is needed for its obvious omissions. ...MoreGreat detail by Kellykilfoyle Needs histology and more anatomy intro information but detail is great for college anatomy hope to get full value out of it. Worst app for the money on iTunes!!! by Kpour I am taking an A&P college level course and thought this app would help but instead I got ripped OFF! $39.99 is crazy to spend on this app. Don't do what I did. Plus it has a reference to wiki because its not that detailed. I want my money back!!!!
