Step 1: Connecting the cables1 ConnectoneendofanHDMIcabletothebackofyourTV.

3 Ifyou’reusinganopticaldigitalaudiocableforaudio,connectoneendofthecabletotheaudioinputportonyourreceiverorTV,andtheotherendtotheopticaldigitalaudioportonthebackofAppleTV.

Step 2: Connect the power cordConnectoneendofthepowercordtothepowerportonthebackofAppleTVandtheotherendtoapoweroutlet.

Updating Your iTunes SoftwareYoucanupdatetothelatestversionofiTunes.

Â On a Mac,useSoftwareUpdatetoupdatetothelatestversionofiTunes.TouseSoftwareUpdate,chooseApple()>SoftwareUpdate.

Â On a Windows-based computer,gotoiTunesHelptoupdatetothelatestversionofiTunes.OpeniTunes,andthenchooseHelp>CheckforUpdates.

Setting Up Home SharingAfteryousetupyournetworkconnection,youneedtosetupiTunesandAppleTVtosharethecontentsofyouriTuneslibrary.UseHomeSharinginiTunesandonAppleTVtosharetheiTuneslibraryofanycomputeronyourlocalnetworkthathasHomeSharingsetup.

Changing the Remote BatteryWhenthebatterychargeinyourAppleRemoteislow,AppleTVdisplaysapictureofaremoteandawarningsymbol(·).ReplacethebatterywithaCR2032battery.

To replace the battery:1 Useacointoremovethebatterycompartmentcover.

2 Removethebattery.

3 InsertaCR2032batterywiththepositiveside(∂)facingup.

4 Replacethebatterycompartmentcoveranduseacointotightenit.

Renting Movies and Purchasing TV ShowsYoucanrentstandardorhigh-definitionmoviesandpurchaseTVshowsdirectlyonAppleTV(whereavailable).Followtheonscreeninstructionstofindoutwhenarentedmovieexpires.PurchasedTVshowsdon’texpire.

Whenarentedmovieexpires,it’snolongeravailableforplayback.Towatchitagain,youcanrentitagainfromiTunes.

TroubleshootingIfyouhaveaproblemwithAppleTV,there’susuallyaquickandsimplesolution.First,makesure:

Â ThepowercordsforAppleTVandyourTVaresecurelyconnectedtoaworkingpowersource.

Â YourTVisturnedonandsettothecorrectinput.

Â AppleTVisconnectedtoyournetwork.GototheSettingsmenuonAppleTV,selectNetwork,andseeifAppleTVhasanIPaddress.

Â YournetworkandInternetconnectionsareonandworkingproperly.

Ifyoustillhavetrouble,tryresettingyourequipmentbydisconnectingAppleTV,yourTV,yourwirelessnetworkingequipmentorbasestation,andyourrouterfromthepoweroutlet.Wait30seconds,andthenreconnecteverything.

If the remote isn’t workingÂ PointtheremotedirectlyatAppleTV.

Â IfyoupairedAppleTVwithanAppleRemote,makesureyou’reusingthepairedremote.

If Apple TV can’t access the networkÂ ChecktheIPaddressAppleTVisusing.Ifitstartswith169.x.x.x,therouterorbasestationmaynotbeconfiguredproperly.ChecktoseeifDHCPaccessisavailable,orconfigureAppleTVwithamanualIPaddress.

Â Checkforanyobstructions,andadjustthelocationofthebasestationorAppleTV.

Â Ifsecurityisenabledonthenetwork,temporarilydisableitonthebasestationandtryconnectingagain.

Â AppleTVcannotconnecttoawirelessnetworkthatcontainshigh(extended)ASCIIordouble-byte(Unicode)characters(suchasJapanese,Korean,orChinese)inthenameorpassword.

Â Ifyournetworkhassecurityenabled,makesureyouenterthecorrectpassword.


If your TV screen appears fuzzy or blackÂ Makesureyou’reusingthecorrectHDMIcableandthatit’sconnectedfirmlytoAppleTVandtoyourTV.

Â MakesuretheinputsettingonyourTVmatchestheinputporttheHDMIcableisconnectedto.Forinformation,seethedocumentationthatcamewithyourTV.

Â MakesureyourHDTVsupports720pvideo.

If you can see a picture but Apple TV isn’t respondingÂ HolddownMenuontheAppleRemotetoreturntotheAppleTVmainmenu.

Â MakesureyourTVisturnedonandfunctioningproperly.Forinformation,seethedocumentationthatcamewithyourTV.

Â IfyoupairedanAppleRemotewithAppleTV,makesureyou’reusingthepairedremote.See“PairingAppleTVwithaRemote”onpage21.

Â ResetAppleTVbydoingoneofthefollowing:

Â HolddownbothMenuandDownontheAppleRemoteuntiltheAppleTVstatuslightblinksrapidly.

If Apple TV doesn’t respond, try restoring itÂ OnAppleTV,chooseSettings>General>Reset,andthenselectRestore.

Â Ifyournetworkdoesn’tuseDHCP,chooseConfigureTCP/IPandentertheTCP/IPconfiguration.

Â IfAppleTVstilldoesn’trespond:

Â DisconnectthepowerandHDMIcablesfromAppleTV.

Â ConnectoneendofamicroUSBcable(soldseparately)tothebackofAppleTV,andtheotherendtoyourcomputer.

Â OpeniTunesonyourcomputer,selectAppleTVintheSourcelist,andthenclickRestore.

If you can’t hear soundÂ IfAppleTVisconnectedtoahometheaterreceiver,makesurethereceiveristurnedon.

Â MakesuretheinputsettingyouselectedonyourTVorreceivermatchestheinputyouhaveyouraudiocableconnectedto.Formoreinformation,seethedocumentationthatcamewithyourreceiver.

Â MakesurethevolumeonyourTVorreceiveristurnedupandisn’tmuted.

Â Makesureyou’reusingthecorrectaudiocableandthatit’sconnectedfirmlytoAppleTVandtoyourTVorreceiver.

Â Ifyou’reusingtheHDMIportforaudio,makesureyourTVsupportsaudiothroughitsHDMIport.TheHDMIportsonsomeolderTVssupportonlyvideo.


If Apple TV isn’t playing your photo albums or slideshowsÂ Makesureyouhavephotosinyourphotolibraryorinafolderonyourcomputer.

Â MakesureAppleTVandthecomputeryou’reusingaresetupforHomeSharing.See“SettingUpHomeSharing”onpage17.

Â Makesurethephotosyouwanttoshareareselected.IniTunes,chooseAdvanced>“ChoosePhotostoShare,”andthenselectthephotosyouwanttoshare.

If noise is coming from your TV speakers:Â IfyourTVorspeakerssupportDolbyDigitalaudio,makesuretheDolbyDigitalOutsettingiscorrectforyourTVorspeakers.OnAppleTV,chooseSettings>Audio&Video>DolbyDigitalOut,andselectOnorOff.
