Step 1: Connecting the cables1 ConnectoneendoftheHDMIcabletothebackofyourTV.

Updating your iTunes softwareYoushouldupdatetothelatestversionofiTunes:

On a Mac,useSoftwareUpdatetoupdatetothelatestversionofiTunes.TouseSoftwareUpdate,chooseApple()>SoftwareUpdate.

On a Windows-based computer,gotoiTunesHelptoupdatetothelatestversionofiTunes.OpeniTunes,andthenchooseHelp>CheckforUpdates.

Setting up Home SharingAfteryousetupyournetworkconnection,youneedtosetupiTunesandAppleTVtosharethecontentsofyouriTuneslibrary.UseHomeSharinginiTunesandonAppleTVtosharetheiTuneslibraryofanycomputeronyourlocalnetworkthathasHomeSharingsetup.

Renting movies and purchasing TV showsYoucanrentstandardorhigh-definitionmoviesandpurchaseTVshowsdirectlyonAppleTV(whereavailable).Followtheonscreeninstructionstofindoutwhenarentedmovieexpires.PurchasedTVshowsdontexpire.

Whenarentedmovieexpires,itsnolongeravailableforplayback.Towatchitagain,youcanrentitagainfromiTunes.

IfyoureusingtheHDMIportforaudio,makesureyourTVsupportsaudiothroughitsHDMIport.TheHDMIportsonsomeolderTVssupportonlyvideo.

If theres noise coming from your TV speakers IfyourTVorspeakerssupportDolbyDigitalaudio,makesuretheDolbyDigitalOutsettingiscorrectfortheTVandspeakers.OnAppleTV,chooseSettings>Audio&Video>DolbyDigital,andselectOnorOff.

If youre having trouble viewing content from your iOS device using AirPlay OnAppleTV,gotoSettings>AirPlayandmakesureAirPlayisenabled.

MakesureyouriOSdeviceandAppleTVareonthesameWi-Finetwork.

MakesureyouriOSdeviceisrunningiOS4.3orlater.

IfyouretryingtouseAirPlayMirroringtoshowthescreenofyouriOSdeviceonAppleTV,checkthatyourdevicesupportsthatfeature.

If Apple TV isnt playing your photo albums or slideshows Makesureyouhavephotosinyourphotolibraryorinafolderonyourcomputer.

MakesureAppleTVandthecomputeryoureusingaresetupforHomeSharing.SeeConnectingtoiTunesonpage17.

Makesurethephotosyouwanttoshareareselected.IniTunes,chooseAdvanced>ChoosePhotostoShare,andthenselectthephotosyouwanttoshare.


MakesureAppleTVandyourcomputerareonthesamelocalnetwork.

If the remote isnt working PointtheremotedirectlyatAppleTV.

Ifyoureusinganunpairedremote,theAppleTVstatuslightflashesthreetimes.

IfyoupairedAppleTVwithanAppleRemoteandyoucantfindthepairedremote,setAppleTVtoworkwithanyAppleRemotebyholdingdownMenuandLeftfor6secondsonanotherremote.

MakesurethefrontofAppleTVisntblocked.

IfAppleTVdisplaysapictureofaremoteandawarningsymbol(),youneedtoreplacethebatteryintheremote.SeeChangingtheremotebatteryonpage23.


If Apple TV cant access the network Checkforanyobstructions,andadjustthelocationofthebasestationorAppleTV.

Ifyournetworkhassecurityenabled,makesureyouenterthecorrectpassword.

Ifsecurityisenabledonthenetwork,temporarilydisableitonthebasestationandtryconnectingagain.

ChecktheIPaddressAppleTVisusing.Ifitstartswith169.x.x.x,therouterorbasestationmaynotbeconfiguredproperly.ChecktoseeifDHCPaccessisavailable,orconfigureAppleTVwithamanualIPaddress.

AppleTVcannotconnecttoawirelessnetworkthatcontainshigh(extended)ASCIIordouble-byte(Unicode)characters(suchasJapanese,Korean,orChinese)inthenameorpassword.

If your TV screen appears fuzzy or black MakesureyourHDTVsupports720por1080pvideo.

MakesureyoureusingthecorrectHDMIcableandthatitsfirmlyconnectedtoAppleTVandtoyourTV.

MakesuretheinputsettingonyourTVmatchestheinputporttheHDMIcableisconnectedto.Forinformation,seethedocumentationthatcamewithyourTV.


If you can see a picture but Apple TV isnt responding HolddownMenuontheAppleRemotetoreturntotheAppleTVmainmenu.

MakesureyourTVisturnedonandworkingproperly.Forinformation,seethedocumentationthatcamewithyourTV.

IfyoupairedanAppleRemotewithAppleTV,makesureyoureusingthepairedremote.SeePairingAppleTVwitharemoteonpage21.

ResetAppleTVbydoingoneofthefollowing:

HolddownbothMenuandDownontheAppleRemoteuntiltheAppleTVstatuslightblinksrapidly.

DisconnectAppleTVfromthepoweroutlet,waitaboutfiveseconds,andthenreconnectit.

Resetting all the settings on your Apple TVYoucanresetallofthesettingsonyourAppleTVtofactoryvalues.

Important: Thisrequiresyoutoreenterallofyournetworkandaccountinformation.

To reset all settings:ChooseSettings>General>Reset>ResetAllSettings.


Restoring your Apple TVIfAppleTVdoesntrespondtoanyoftheprevioussteps,orifyouwanttoresetAppleTVtoitsdefaultsettings,youcanrestoreyourAppleTVsoftware.

To restore Apple TV:ChooseSettings>General>Reset,andthenselectRestore.
