The Wolcott Board of Education seeks an outstanding educational leader for the position of Superintendent of Schools and invites qualified and interested candidates to apply. Cooperative Educational Services Executive Searches will facilitate the search on behalf of the Board of Education. The Search Committee expects the new superintendent to assume responsibilty of the office during the 2015-16 school year.

Qualified candidates, at minimum, are expected to meet the following general performance standards for the superintendent and must:

Wolcott, originally known as Farmingbury, is a largely residential commu-nity that offers a comfortable retreat from one of Connecticut’s most bustling areas. The town was founded in 1796 and is named for Governor Oliver Wolcott. It is located in northern New Haven County and is a short ride to Hartford, New Haven, Danbury, Waterbury, and several other cities along the state’s I-84 corridor. There are a great number of recreational opportunities, including a new youth center and sports complex as well as access to some of the most gorgeous hiking trails in New England.

Wolcott is proud of its heritage and is home to a very active and engaged population of more than 16,000 people. Volunteerism is strong in the commu-nity, as evident by local residents serving in three volunteer fire departments and an ambulance service. The town is home to many small businesses that con-tribute to the fabric of Wolcott.

The Wolcott Board of Education operates five schools. Students from preschool through grade five attend the town’s three elementary schools, Alcott, Frisbie, and Wakelee, respectively. Students attend Tyrrell Middle School from grades six through eight, and Wolcott High School serves students from the ninth grade through graduation.

The school system is a source of pride to the community and was lauded for achievement several times in 2014-15. Honors for the school district include:

• Wolcott High School named one of the Top 500 high schools in Amercia (Newsweek)

• Alcott named 2013-14 Outstanding Elementary School of the Year (CAS)

• Wakelee Elementary and Tyrrell Middle deemed “Excelling Schools” (Connecticut Department of Education)

• Board of Education honored with 2014 Level II Leadership Award (CABE)

• Five Board of Education Excellence in Communication Awards (CABE)

• Understand and model appropriate value systems, ethics, and moral leadership, and coordinate with social and human services, as appropriate, to help students grow and develop.

• Demonstrate leadership through empowering and inspiring others within the organization by visioning and shaping a positive and productive school and district culture.

• Be committed to collaboratively building the capacity of the entire school system.

• Be able to build mutually respectful relationships by working effectively with the Board to formulate district policy, define mutual expectations of personnel performance and demonstrate effective governance to all staff, students, and the community at large.

• Be able to establish and sustain effective communications with the Board, students, staff, parents, and the community as a whole, including fostering relationships with the media and responding to community feedback.

• Be able to gather and analyze data for decision-making and performance evaluation, and to provide recommendations to the Board for effective and efficient allocation of district resources.

• Remain current with advances in curriculum, teaching, learning and assessment theories and “best practices” including the integration of technology in an educational setting. Demonstrate knowledge of CCSS, SBAC, and other key district initiatives.

• Possess knowledge about and ability to promote effective teaching practices throughout the district and to facilitate use of instructional resources to maximize student achievement for all students.

• Demonstrate skill in developing and implementing up-to-date staff performance evaluation systems and applying ethical, contractual and legal requirements for personnel selection, development, retention, promotion, and dismissal.

• Possess strong financial and managerial background.

• Think effectively under pressure and be able to win the trust and confidence of others through demonstrated competence and character.

• Have a professional approach to speaking and writing.

• Be committed to improving learning outcomes for all students.

• Be active and visible in the schools and the community.
