Prince George’s County 7th
District Youth Leadership Program
What is the Prince George’s County 7th
District Youth Leadership Program? The Prince George’s County 7
th District Youth Leadership Program (Youth Leadership Program) is a 3-year
program designed to primarily assist selected high-potential 7th District students attending neighboring high
schools (Suitland, Central, Potomac, Crossland and Forestville High Schools) to make smart life choices, develop
leadership and mentoring skills, complete high school and pursue post-high school education. The program was
created as a vision of former Prince George’s County Councilwoman Camille A. Exum (7th District), who wanted
talented youth to learn important life skills for success today to enhance their opportunities for achievement
tomorrow. The Honorable Karen R. Toles, immediate past Prince George’s County Councilwoman (7th District),
continued to support this dynamic program. Also, MNCPPC has provided financial support for the program since
its inception in 2004.
Who Participates in the Prince George’s County 7th
District Youth Leadership Program? During the spring semester of the school year, high-potential 9
th grade students are identified by teachers,
counselors, etc., and are eligible to compete for one of ten slots for the upcoming class of 10th graders. Only ten
10th graders are accepted each year, through a competitive selection process that includes an essay, application,
grades and recommendation letters. Those accepted into the program are expected to complete all three years of
the program, gaining new skills and development opportunities each year.
How Does the Prince George’s County 7th
District Youth Leadership Program Work? The Youth Leadership Program operates during the school year and is administered by The Training Source, Inc.,
a Standards For Excellence® accredited, HUD Best Practice training and development nonprofit organization. At
least once per month, on Saturdays or school-closing days, participants meet to discuss topics or participate in
trips and activities planned by youth regarding topics identified by youth, during the selection and program
assessment process, as important to their growth, development and survival during the turbulent teen years. As
participants move from 10th to 11
th to 12
th grade, their involvement in planning and implementing program days
increases. Some standard activities include college tours during spring break (11th grade), field trips, community
outreach activities, college and career planning activities, and workshops on money management, peer pressure,
and teen esteem.
What is the Cost for the Prince George’s County 7th
District Youth Leadership Program? Due to our generous funding partners, there is no cost for selected participants for the Youth Leadership Program.
Materials, fees, meals and transportation associated with program day activities are benefits of participation.
Small fees may apply for activities planned by and/or for participants beyond planning days.
What is Expected of Program Participants?
Program participants are expected to actively participate in scheduled program day activities, and as many special
activities as possible. They are expected to develop leadership characteristics and to demonstrate those
characteristics beyond program days to make an impact in their schools and communities. They are expected to
make smart choices, complete high school, and pursue a college education or career-level employment. They are
expected to be leaders!
Please call (301) 499-8872 for more information or visit www.thetrainingsource.org beginning the first day
of Spring Break annually to apply.
