الأشخاص: هم العنصر المهم في النظام و يجب أن يحددوا ما يريدون من النظام ( من مختلف الاختصاصات ). البيانات: إن توفر و دقة البيانات ( مكانية و وصفية ) يؤثر على نتائج التحليل و الاستفسار. التحليل: التطبيق. الهارد وير: إن كفاءة الهاردوير ( حواسب، مواسح، طابعات... ) يسرع العملية و يسهل الإخراج. السوفت وير: البرامج ( الأنظمة )، لا يشمل فقط السوفت وير الأصلي للـ GIS و إنما هناك سوفت وير آخر يتعلق بالبيانات و الصور و العمليات التحليلية و الإحصائية.

يقوم النظام بإجراء التحليل عبر سلسلة من الخطوات وصولا إلى النتائج أو حلول المشكلة. ثلاثة أنماط أكثر شيوعا للتحليل الجغرافي: تحليل الجوار ( علاقة القرب و البعد بين السمات ): يستخدم النظام عملية Buffer لتحديد علاقة التقارب بين العناصر. تحليل المطابقة ( علاقات التقاطع و المطابقة بين السمات ): دمج لايرات ذات بيانات مختلفة يتطلب عملية مطابقة مكانيا. التحليل الشبكي ( العلاقات الاتصالية بين العناصر ): يختبر حالة كون العناصر الخطية متصلة و كيف تتم الحركة خلالها (أقصر طريق، عطل الشبكة).
