Vapors and GasesEnsure that vapors and gases do not exceed the prescribed limits. If necessary, exhaust vapors and gases and/or provide sufficient ventilation of thework space.

SubstrateThe substrate should be free of dust, grease and moisture. The suitable material, optimum working conditions, and possible pre‐treatment of the substrate must be determined by testing.

Processing TemperatureWhen materials require heating, adherence to the prescribed processingtemperature is imperative to ensure the quality of the application. It may notbe exceeded! Overheating can cause material coking or cracking, resulting inmalfunctioning or unit failure.

Material should always be melted gently. Extended, unnecessary temperature load should be avoided. The temperature should be reduced duringbreaks in work. The temperature in the tank should be attuned to the materialconsumption. Thus it is close to the prescribed processing temperature forhigh material consumption and lower for lower consumption.

When materials are processed cold, take into consideration the shear heatand the ambient temperature; cool if necessary.

P/N 7560317_02 2015 Nordson CorporationVarioCoat-S / VarioCoat-MEdition 09/15

Description of FunctionsThe following figure illustrates the basic method of operation of an applicatorwithin a complete system.

Adhesive is to be applied to a substrate (7). The transport belts (8) conveythe substrates. When the leading edge of a substrate reaches the photo cell(10), the beam of light sent is reflected and the program is started. Thecontroller compiles all the data according to the speed of the productionmachine. The encoder (4) is mechanically connected to the transportequipment via a gear and supplies one pulse per millimeter. The control unitevaluates all the data and establishes the point at which the applicators (5)must be activated.

The adhesive pump (12) is connected to the compressed air supply (1). Itoperates continuously and pumps the adhesive from the adhesive reservoir (11) to the applicators (5).

A current between 0 ‐ 20 mA is supplied from the control unit (3) to theproportional pressure control valve (2). The strength of the current isdependent on the speed of the production machine. The strength of thecurrent determines how far the proportional pressure control valve (2) shouldbe opened and the adhesive regulator (9) opens accordingly. The adhesiveflows to the applicators (5) and is applied to the substrate. The length of theapplication is defined by the control unit program.

FunctioningThe electro-pneumatically controlled applicators are intended to be used toapply water‐based adhesives. They are particularly well suited to continuousor intermittent contact application of adhesive.

The applicator module works with compressed air. After switching on thepower to the solenoid valve on the module, the nozzle needle in the modulemoves down through the compressed air, thus opening the module nozzle. When the power is switched off, compressed air forces the needle up,closing the nozzle.

Closing the module creates overpressure, which draws the excess adhesiveback into the module. This ensures clean cut-off of the adhesive application.

InstallingDue to possible self‐vibrations caused by intermittent operation, theapplicator should be installed as firmly as possible.

The transmission of vibrations from the production machine to the applicatorshould be avoided to the greatest possible extent.

To achieve good results, the applicator must be precisely aligned to thesubstrate in the horizontal, vertical, axial and radial directions.

The applicators should be installed in an easily accessible location becausethey need to be removed for cleaning and maintenance purposes.

NOTE: In general, a production machine is a machine in which Nordsonequipment for adhesive application is integrated (e.g. a packing machine). The term production machine means the same as Parent machine whichmay appear in other Nordson literature.

Fig. 3‐1 Aligning applicator VarioCoat-S

Fig. 3‐2 Aligning applicator VarioCoat-M

NOTE: For the adhesive to be distributed evenly, the slot nozzle and thesubstrate have to touch one another properly. The ideal depth of submersionis a few millimeters. Ensure that the substrate tension is sufficient, constantand even.

Emergency ShutdownFind out about proper behavior in emergency situations and know thelocation and activation of EMERGENCY OFF operating elements installed inthe production area.

ATTENTION: Activate the EMERGENCY OFF switch in any emergencysituation.

1. Trigger the nearest EMERGENCY OFF element (e.g. EMERGENCY OFFswitch or main switch with EMERGENCY OFF function).

2. Determine and remedy the cause of EMERGENCY OFF before switchingthe system on again.

Initial Startup1. Set the air pressure on the adhesive pump such that the maximum

adhesive pressure of 25 bar (362 psi) is not exceeded.

NOTE: The applicators do not work at higher pressure.

2. Place a container underneath the applicator and switch on the controlunit.

3. Set the control unit such that the adhesive flows out of the applicator slotnozzle evenly and without any air bubbles.

VarioCoat-MIf there is an air relief valve (Refer to Fig. 2‐5), open it to bleed.

4. Carry out test gluing and check the adhesive bead.

NOTE: If a thicker bead is required, the pressure can be increased but not inexcess of the maximum adhesive pressure.

VarioCoat-MIf there is a throttle valve (Refer to Fig. 2‐5), it can be used to adjust theadhesive quantity of the modules.

Daily Startup1. Check whether there is sufficient adhesive in the reservoir.

2. Check that the slot nozzle is clear and clean.

3. Release the air pressure for the adhesive pump.

Daily Shutdown

1. Shut off the compressed air supply to the adhesive pump (reduce to 0bar).

2. Apply grease or a silicone paste to the nozzle opening on the applicator,or submerge it a few millimeters in a bath of clean water or soapy wateruntil it is needed again.

NOTE: When the adhesive pressure applied to the applicator reaches 15 bar(210 psi), the slot needle moves down without compressed air and andadhesive flows out of the slot nozzle. It is advisable to reduce the adhesivepressure upon standstill, before the compressed air is switched off.

Preventive Maintenance

Cleaning Applicator

It is not necessary to clean the applicator if air is prevented from entering intothe hydraulic system and coming into contact with the adhesive. If thisoccurs, however, the adhesive begins to solidify after approx. 30 minutes. The precise time varies according to the adhesive used. Blocked slot nozzleorifices or applicators can be cleaned easily at any time.

NOTE: Do not disassemble an applicator in which adhesive has solidified! Itis highly likely this would damage sensitive components.

We recommend immersing the applicator in warm water for 1 - 2 days todissolve the adhesive. Repeat the process several times, if necessary. If theapplicator still cannot be disassembled, return it to us for repair.

NOTE: Do not clean the module and solenoid valve with water.

Regular Maintenance

We recommend purging the applicators with water twice a year. Theapplicators should always be kept clean; remove adhesive residue and dirtdaily.

NOTE: Do not clean the module and solenoid valve with water.

Slot Nozzle

Maintenance

The slot nozzle and particularly the nozzle opening are decisive to the qualityof the adhesive application.

NOTE: Use only the cleaning tool (part number: 7305005) for cleaning.

NOTE: The slot nozzle is a high precision, valuable part. Handle verycarefully! Protect the slot nozzle from damage, e.g. with the originalpackaging.

NOTE: Never touch or clean the opening on the slot nozzle with hard and/orabrasive materials. Avoid touching the nozzle opening with metallicmaterials.

NOTE: Use only plastic or copper sensor gauges to measure the slot width.

NOTE: Protect the slot nozzle from dirt. Remove polluted slot nozzles andclean all parts with water.

Installation

NOTE: For the slot nozzle to function properly, it has to be correctly attachedand aligned.

1. Place the slot nozzle (1) on a flat surface (2), preferably with the backplate against a rectangular block (3).

Troubleshooting

ATTENTION: Allow only qualified personnel to perform the following tasks.Observe and follow the safety instructions in this document and all otherrelated documentation.

The applicators are easy to maintain and generally maintenance‐free. Whenused for their intended purpose, all the elements have a long service life.

ATTENTION: Disconnect power supply!

ATTENTION: Stop the adhesive supply!

ATTENTION: When possible, always wear protective gloves when carryingout the work.

Always observe the following basic points:

Ensure that the material to be applied is clean and filtered. The control air

should also be clean when supplied to the equipment.

Individual operating conditions and different application material require a

corresponding minimum effort for maintenance.

Do not use metallic, sharp-edged tools to clean the outside of the

equipment, e.g. nozzle tips, only use soft brushes.

When carrying out repair or maintenance work, keep the working space

as well as the applicator to be repaired as clean as possible.

Polluted applicators should be thoroughly purged when possible. This

applies particularly when a slot nozzle, sealing elements or materialnozzle needs to be replaced.

The applicators should not remain installed for any important

maintenance work but be removed from the machines.

Stop the pressure and material supply lines beforehand.

Problem Possible cause Corrective action

Applicator doesnot apply any glue

Insufficient/no compressedair

Check pneumatic signal. If the pressure is less than 4bar (58 psi), the module may not open. Set airpressure to max. 6 bar (87 psi).

No voltage supplied to thesolenoid valve

Check whether 24 VDC is being supplied to thesolenoid valve connection. Check polarity.

Defective solenoid valve If the solenoid valve does not switch properly, use themanual trigger to switch it.

NOTE: Use only control voltage of 24 VDC. Avoidvoltage peaks.

Slot nozzle clogged Clean slot nozzle.

Air in applicator Open air relief valve until adhesive flows out of the airrelief valve evenly and free of bubbles.

If there is no air relief valve, trigger the applicator toopen it, leaving it open until adhesive flows out of theslot nozzle evenly and free of bubbles.

Throttle valve closed Open throttle valve completely and set correctly withthe aid of a test application.

Adhesive dripsfrom slot nozzle

Insufficient/no compressedair

Check pneumatic signal. If the pressure is less than 4bar (58 psi), the applicator may leak. Set air pressureto max. 6 bar (87 psi).

Valve insert worn Replace valve insert.

Irregularapplication

Substrate not tensedevenly across the width

Check substrate tension and adjust if necessary.

Applicator positionedincorrectly

Correct the axial and/or radial position of theapplicator.

Check slot nozzle submersion depth in substrate.Slight pretension is desirable. The slot nozzle has torun parallel to the substrate and have contact with thesubstrate.

Slot nozzle polluted Clean slot nozzle.

Adhesiveapplication longerthan that set oncontrol unit

Applicator polluted Disassemble the applicator and check for adhesiveresidue. Clean the elements under cold, running water(Refer to the section Maintenance).

NOTE: Never use sharp or metallic tools for cleaning. This could damage the metallic parts.

Slot nozzlequickly polluted

Slot nozzle positionedincorrectly

The substrate has to run smoothly below the slotnozzle. So tilt the slot nozzle slightly towards thesubstrate.

NOTE: 1 Max. system pressure. Safe maximum system pressure.

NOTE: 2 Working material pressure. Minimum and maximum workingmaterial pressure at which proper operation is ensured (depends on thematerial viscosity).

NOTE: 3 When the material viscosity is > 5,000 cps, it is advisable to use anadhesive pump with continuous flow.

ATTENTION: 4 Risk of damage! Do not use switching accelerators thatshorten the solenoid valve switching times with a brief surge impulse. Triggerthe solenoid valve only with voltage of 24 VDC. Higher voltage (e.g. voltagepeaks) will damage the solenoid valves.

NOTE: 5 The time is heavily dependent on the adhesive and only serves as aguideline value. The minimum uptime is related to the bead length, theminimum downtime to the distance between two beads (the stitch).
