foreword

A student at Erasmus School of Economics is not just a student. Just a student follows classes, makes exams, passes exams, applies for a job and starts to work. In contrast, a student at Erasmus School of Economics follows classes, makes exams, gets good grades AND could do volunteer work, goes abroad for an internship, follows a summer program somewhere, is member of a student association, organizes a trip abroad, in short: makes the most of his or her student life. Once you leave our school, you cannot do it anymore. So, when you are with us, with Erasmus School of Economics, do whatever you can do, make the most of it, become part of our team, and join our student assocation EFR in the board or participate in their activities. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Do it now!

Prof. Dr. Philip Hans Franses Dean Erasmus School of Economics

EFR timeline

With over 6200 members, EFR is one of the most active and most professional study associations of the Netherlands. EFR’s portfolio is large and diverse. It ranges from organising smaller events to help students orientate to large recruitment events. From small interactive speaker sessions to the largest of congresses and debates. From a skills week for students, to personal development for over 180 committee members. And, from drinking with your friends in the Stoep to shaking hands with leaders of the business or political world. Our activities prepare students for the job market, bring them into contact with their future employer and enhance their student experience. In short: we bridge the gap between theory and practice.

EFR in numbers 6200+ members 150 committee members 26 part time committees 2 full time committees 8 board members

EFR board

year in short

Pausing your studies and dedicating a year to an assocation might seem a little odd. However, during such a year, you gain practical experience which you will not be able to get in class. Working fulltime on a project results in discovering all aspects of a project; from brainstorming to marketing and logistics. Furthermore, you will not be going fulltime alone, but with a team of equally motivated and ambitious students. You will share all the milestones and setbacks, therefore you will develop a very strong friendship!

Who are we looking for? enthousiastic, ready to take initiative persistent solution oriented, not afraid to take a risk responsible, capable and willing to carry the ultimate responsibility social

some

testimonials

As it is hard to explain the whole board year experience, you will find testimonials and pictures of current board members and the highlights of their year on the following pages. Because a board year is so much more than only position related business, we firstly want to give you a little insight into the life of the board members by these testimonials and pictures.

Page 5: Apply now for the 55th EFR board! · 2016 EFR’s new corporate identity is launched 2017 Launch of new EFR website 2018 EFR welcomes François Hollande to award him the World Leader

“This year started at the Stoep, where I got to meet my 7 fellow board members. After meeting these crazy, funny and stupid students at the champagne drink this night, I could not have imagined the amazing moments and highlights I would experience with them this year. For me it was completely new to work with 7 people and spend every day with them, but I loved it. One of my highlights of this year was presenting EFR to the Raad van Toezicht of the university, a committee which examines the university on its performance. The dean of the Erasmus School of Economics asked me to represent the faculty at this meeting to show what kind of extracurricular activities are available at this university. This was quite an honour and something I would have never experienced without being the president of EFR!”

“A board year at EFR starts off with a bang. After you are chosen to be part of the board you immediately go to the announcement drink and the next day you will start the year with the “wisselingsweek”, during which all kinds of secret things will take place. After this, you will take over EFR together with the rest of your board. At first this might seem intimidating but you will quickly get used to it and you will have a lot of fun doing it. After this first big bang which signals the beginning of a board year the fireworks will not stop. During a board year you always have something to do and this year will provide you with the best learning experience a student could wish for. Among that, you learn to cooperate with others, make important decisions, be flexible and get to know yourself better than ever. Together with the other 7 members of the board you will create an impact on the association that will last for decades and an everlasting bond with each other.”

Jan Clerkx Treasurer 2017-2018

“I am responsible for the financial side of EFR. This is a great challenge since it means that I also carry the final responsibility for all revenue and expenditures. The fun part is that the decision of what to spend money on is mine. This decision making process involves a lot of communication. I have to be aware of everyone’s opinion in order to make well balanced decisions. At times, when people don’t agree with me, I have to be able to back up my choices with logical arguments. On the other hand, as soon as I mention that there is extra budget for something, people love me for it. Being the treasurer means that I play a part in the organization of each event, which means that I am well informed about all upcoming projects. This gives me great insights in the impressive scale and scope of EFR. I guess it will be years from now before I have a position within a business where I am allowed to handle the same level of responsibility as I do now, in the EFR board.”

Saskia Dekkers Marketing Officer 2017-2018

“As the marketing officer, you are involved in every event EFR offers. This year, I was involved in so many cool project and experienced a lot of amazing things. One of my most important focus points was Erasmus Recruitment, the strong brand of the Erasmus Recruitment Platform and the Erasmus Recruitment Days. Working together with other ambitious and highly motivated students really made this year very special! Besides my involvement in all the events, there is one other thing that I would not want to miss during my board year, my board. These seven other board members really made this year, the best year of my student life so far. You get an extremely strong bond together and work together on great projects, which really deepens the connection. Experiencing the stressful days at the office, chilling together after a night out, visiting the WU ball in Vienna and go on nice trips together, your board will definitely make your board year even better!“

Lisanne Hofman Project Manager General 2017-2018

“Wow, what a year it has been so far. It all started with meeting my seven fellow board members. Until then I hadn’t really noticed yet, but I had already taken a seat in the rollercoaster. Yes, a rollercoaster; it goes fast, it is very exciting and contains many highlights. For example, in November we organized the kick off of Lead Your Future. A very inspiring event, that empowered 500 young women. Also, visiting the WU Ball in Vienna and sequentially the SkiTrip was a highlight to me. The ball was amazing, the atmosphere even better. Currently, we are organizing the EFR Business Week; two weeks of recruitment activities and two larger congresses, of which one is welcoming François Hollande. Who thought that a school’s association could manage this? I also enjoy collaborating and working at the office with the board. There’s always something going on or happening; days are never the same and we’re having a lot of fun. Overall, I’ve gained many new skills and experiences, developed personally and I have found myself seven best friends.”

Dunvel Délias Project Manager Education 2017-2018

“Being a board member of EFR has been the most challenging yet rewarding experience I have ever gained so far. As the first Project Manager Education within EFR, I have had the chance to set the standards for this exciting position by supervising five committees and working on several university-wide projects. I get so much energy from being in touch every single day with a wide range of committee members and parties, and from keeping an overview of all the projects my position is filled with.

During my board year, not only I got to know extensively the seven other board members and discovered deeper meanings to the word “friendship”, but I also got to see new facets of my own self. EFR gave me the perfect learning platform, as the oldest study association of Rotterdam and one of the most professional in the Netherlands.”

Luuk Hackeng Project Manager Career 2017-2018

“Looking back on this insane year, I can say with certainty it was the peak of my student life so far.Embarking on this journey in the summer with seven other relatively unknown people, to ending with them, a brandnew group of best friends. It is actually quite remarkble that this can happen in such a short time! What a rollercoaster it was, and you’ll only know what I precisely mean when you actually are doing your board year. From all the great and also challenging first 7 months with the ERD, to continuous contact with 5 other committees full of excited students. From a booming ERP, to the EFR skitrip and all the social drinks and parties. And then all the diverse parties you work with: students, companies, other associations, professors, NGOs, embassies - amazing! Both your own personal development, as well as the development of all your committee members are things you can be proud of after such a year!”

Rutger Bos Commercial Officer 2017-2018

“This year started well with the visits of all the commercial partners. It was quite a hectic start, but I learned a lot from it! In September, when the academic year began, the Erasmus Recruitment Days and Business Week commercial officers started off with my help. Once the commercial deadlines of those big events passed I started focusing on the online recruitment possibilities of EFR, especially on expanding the Erasmus Recruitment Platform. Besides that, I am also concentrating on EFR’s long term strategy. An EFR board year is incredibly nice thanks to its diverse and large portfolio of events and committees. This year, I have met so many people and my network greatly expanded. Next to the career and recruitment related activities, I also enjoy the social part that EFR has to offer. With the board, you experience many great moments with each other such as the EFR ski trip or the official gala of the university of Vienna. In short: I highly recommend a board year at EFR.”

coolest year of your life!

During all the serious business, you will also just do a lot of very cool stuff: from meeting the former president of France, to going to a dinner with all former EFR board members.

The year is full of unique and fun events - it will be a year you will never forget!

friends for life

with your teamYou will experience all the ups and downs in a year with a small and close group of people. Together with your board, you will be working a lot on a professional level but perhaps even more on a social level. You will most likely see each other every day. This will create a bond that lasts a lifetime!

with the committee membersAs an EFR board member, you will belong to the inner circle of the EFR community. Together with the EFR’s tight committee member network, you will join the parties, weekends away, Committee Members Prom and drinks. This results in a broad network that can be very useful for the organisation of your event(s).

with former board membersMany former boards still see each other on a regular basis. EFR’s Alumni Organisation hosts some of these reunions in the form of a former board dinner and the alumni day. As a board member you get to know a lot of old board members who help you in many ways and with whom you can have great parties!

personal, social and professional development

personal

Learning to handle big responsibilities, giving effective feedback, receiving criticism and making decisions constrained by a tight schedule, are important skills that are not easily learned in a classroom. You might have had a time management training, or have read something about giving feedback but it is only after you have done it yourself, that you will begin to understand the fine nuances of these soft skills. A fulltime year provides a constant environment to practice and develop these very valuable skills. Also, for EFR board members there are personal coaches who will assist and advise you on your personal development.

social

As you will be working together closely with a lot of people, your social skills will develop as well. Managing expectations and communicating appropriately are skills you can only learn by doing.

professional

As a fulltimer, you will improve your personal skills enormously. However, you will also improve your professional skills. You will learn how to use your time efficiently, negotiate contracts and network. Furthermore, you have the unique opportunity to arrange multiple trainings in the soft skills, (time management, leadership, how to lead a meeting) and/or hard skills (InDesign, Salesforce, Google Adwords) you would like to develop.

“During your fulltime year, you will be able to discover and develop new capabili-ties.”

network: students, alumni and professionals

students

As a fulltimer, you will be the beating heart of EFR’s community. You will be at almost every event and thus know all the people in the association – and they will know you!

professional

As a fulltimer, you are constantly in contact with professionals from a wide selection of national and international companies. Every board member interacts not only with people from the corporate world, but also with other prominent people ranging from princess Laurentien to the Ambassador of France in the Netherlands.

alumni

EFR maintains a tightly knit network of former committee and board members. This network dates back to 1925, EFR’s year of birth. As a fulltimer, you will soon notice that your predecessors are (still) very involved with EFR’s activities. They are always willing to advice on specific projects, or answer more personal questions about your development or future career choices.

support and personal development

supervisory board

All board members are supported by the supervisory board. The supervisory board helps when needed. They are all former board members and have a lot of experience both within the assocation as well as outside of it.

personal coaching programme

Being a board member can be quite demanding and it is hard to be consciously busy with your personal development plan. Therefore, the EFR board members get the opportunity to have a personal coach. This coach will assist and advise you on your personal development.

financial support

Being a board member means you cannot study for a year and you do not have enough time for a sidejob. However, the university and EFR support initiatives like a fulltime year and therefore provide you with compensations. For more detailed information, you can always email [email protected]

You will not do your fulltime year by yourself. Throughout the entire year, you will be surrounded by people that are always ready to help you.

some words from recruiters “A fulltime committee is very interesting for your own development as well from a recruitment perspective. First of all you learn a lot from ‘real-life’ situations; during your studies you deal with very controlled problems together with similar people. But you actually start learning when you work in a different team dynamics in a ‘real-world’ environment. From that perspective you develop yourself on social level and that is something I personally really like. Besides that, there are so many other things you can learn from a fulltime committee; you learn to multitask, to set priorities, to communicate, to work together, to broaden your network and last but not least, you are willing to be involved in something else besides your studies and you are willing to work for it. These are all elements you will be confronted with during a future job, so how nice would it be if you can already taste a bit of that right now? Of course it is very fun as well to do a committee! So as a Campus Recruiter I would strongly advise you to do a full-time board year! Good luck! :)”

Jessie de Groot, IT Campus Recruiter ING

“Being in a fulltime committee or board is not only an addition to your CV. You will also strengthen a lot of other competences. For example you will learn how to work in a team, you will have to reflect on your own acts and you will increase your leadership qualities. As the Recruitment Advisor I am responsible for the recruitment and selection of starters in the consultancy branch of KPMG. Therefore, I can certainly say that students with fulltime committee- or boardexperience have developed themselves strongly on the above mentioned points. I would really recommend you to apply for a fulltime position. It does not only add a lot to your personal development, but besides that it is also a really cool experience! ”

Florien van Bommel, Recruitment Advisor KPMG

What you don’t know yet is the part that comes after a board year at EFR. See, as a board member your capabilities are boosted in no other way possible. Leading a professional and international organisation at your age? Of course! At EFR you can, whilst being trained and supported to do so. Your fellow motivated board members become your best support system, former board members guide you through a Supervisory Board, and you will receive professional trainings and individual mentoring to get the best on-the-job learning experience. During my Board year I discovered my passion for leading open-minded teams where enthusiasm is the key driver. I learned how to juggle strategic decision making with marketing, finance and team work, and I got to work with those on campus that both work and play hardest. My biggest win was gaining experience in a work environment where making mistakes is OK – we are all here to learn. EFR’s endless network facilitated my career orientation, plus having had so many experiences most definitely helped me in every job interview and currently in my career within Unilever’s Future Leadership Programme. Worried about your resume or not having had any EFR experience? I most definitely did not have any – you just need to have the right motivation and apply now!

Niels TiggesProject Manager General 50th EFR Board

testimonial testimonial

As a former board member of EFR, I look back at my EFR board year with a smile. Three years ago, I just finished my IBEB bachelor and was confronted with a choice most of you will recognise: start your masters, do an internship or become a board member at EFR. I am forever grateful that I chose the right option: a board year at EFR. Doing an internship is interesting if you want career specific knowledge, but the challenges and responsibilities are so limited! Becoming a board member grants you full responsibility of your own ‘company’. Until this day, I use the lessons I learned at EFR for my current job at KLM. My advice: develop your skills and boost your CV by doing a board year before following the rest of your fellow students who become an intern. Internships won’t go away and a board is year is (by far!) the best year of your student life.

positions and modules

The 55th board will work with a so-called “modular structure”. This means that approximately 80% of your position is fixed and 20% consists of modules. A module is a task that is not yet appointed to a specific board position and to which you can apply regardless of the board positions you are applying for. Not every position has the same amount of modular space. For some positions, the function involves so many different aspects of the organization so the modular space is zero. The amount of modular space is indicated below every position description with the amount of stars. These stars correspond with the workload of the modules. When applying, please indicate for which position(s) you are applying and which modules you would like to add.

The modules are as follows: personal development fulltimers * Alumni association board * recruitment ** strategic focus point *** Vice President *** guidance Board Assistent ***

Each “*” corresponds with a workload of two hours per week.

personal development fulltimers* Every fulltime committee member dedicates his year not only to EFR, but also to learn and develop as much as he/she can. It is therefore of great importance that the fulltime members get the necessary trainings and support. These trainings can range from a strategy and policy training at McKinsey to a teambuilding session with a team coach.

Typical to do’s: talk to the Board, Business Week and ERD committee to identify learning goals contact training companies schedule trainings for the transition period

Alumni association Board*The EFR Alumni association has its own board consisting of former board and committee members and one current board member. EFR alumni association organises several events throughout the year, such as the Former Board Members dinner, the End of Year activity and the pre-General Assembly dinners. As part of the Alumni association Board, you will be organising these events. You will therefore also supervise the External Affairs Committee. This committee is the networking committee of EFR and aims to find interesting speakers.

Typical to do’s: write a newsletter to the former board members upload pictures of the pre-General Assembly dinners write and send the official invitation for the Former Board Members Dinner meet with the EA chairman and committee

guidance Board Assistent***Last year, EFR had a pilot in working with a board assistent. The board assistent is a student in management support. The board assisent should have a supervisor who makes sure that the board assistent can do his/her work in the best way possible. With this module, you get the chance to develop your communcation and guidance skills.

Typical to do’s: Recruit a new board assistent Meet with the supervisor from the study of the board assistent Meet with the board assistent to evaluate how everything is going

strategic focus point***EFR is continuously trying to keep the long term strategy compatible with the developing environment. Starting new long term projects does not happen overnight and is preceded by a consultancy-like process of evaluating the opportunities and the impact. An example of a project with long term implications is the Erasmus Recruitment Platform or the EFR Summaries. Together with the Supervisory Board these projects are developed working in smaller groups, called focus point groups. In this module, you will be the contact person for the supervisory board and carry the responsibility that the feedback is used and deadlines are met.

Typical to do’s: plan a meeting with your fellow focus point group members to assess the to do’s send the work to the Supervisory Board receive and use the feedback of the Supervisory Board

Vice-President***The President and the Vice-President work together closely and support each other when needed. If the president is absent, the Vice-President will take over the tasks of the president. Together, you will work on the development and implementation of this year’s EFR policy. Furthermore, as a Vice-President you will maintain the non-commercial contacts with for example embassies and the government. These contacts are of great value for EFR, both in the short and long term. Typical to do’s: meet with alumni officer of the ESE schedule meetings with embassys work on policy document with the President

recruitment**Being responsible for recruitment, means being responsible for filling the 26 committees with ambitious, dedicated and enthusiastic committee members and recruiting the next board. Both parttime and fulltime recruitment are projects that lean on a well-developed strategy. You will have to think about the marketing of the positions, the application procedure and the type(s) of people we are looking for.

Typical to do’s: set up a meeting with the Marketing Officer and STAR to discuss the promotion of Erasmus Recruitment committees plan the transition period for the new board work on the interview questions and plan interview moments with your fellow boardmembers

It is up to you to make sure the communication runs smoothly within the Board and you are responsible for the cohesion of the group. Therefore a good understanding of people is required.
