Each year, the Public Risk Management Association (PRIMA) rewards several students from occupational safety and public administration programs with scholarships to attend PRIMA’s Annual Conference, which is the ONLY educational conference for risk managers in the public sector.

The PRIMA Student Scholarship Program provides students a unique opportunity to meet, talk with and learn from expert practitioners in the public

risk management field by attending PRIMA’s Annual Conference. Each recipient will be matched with a risk management professional who will serve as a mentor before, during and after PRIMA’s Annual Conference and will receive a complimentary one-year student membership to PRIMA.

the scholarship recipient will develop an appreciation for the importance of risk management in effective government administration and will take home an invaluable educational and professional experience.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO APPLY?Any full-time student in good standing who is currently enrolled in occupational safety, risk management and insurance or a similar degree program is invited to apply for these scholarships. A committee made up of public risk managers, members of PRIMA’s board of directors and/or professors of public administration will select the scholarship recipients. Scholarship winners will be contacted in April.

PRIMA’S STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMThe rapid growth of risk management in public administration has outpaced many universities’ offerings in this subject area as part of their public administration programs. PRIMA’s Student Scholarship Program acquaints students of public administration with this increasingly recognized and important profession.

WHAT WILL THE STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS RECEIVE?The scholarship recipients will attend PRIMA’s Annual Conference. This four-day educational program brings together top risk management practitioners from across the United States and Canada and from as far away as Great Britain and Australia. The conference features more than 50 interactive sessions and workshops on a wide range of risk management topics, tied directly to the core competencies of a risk manager. Session topics include: the risk management process, cost benefit analysis, occupational safety and health, leadership and general management skills, environmental concerns, employee benefits, claims management, school safety, cyberliability and hot topic sessions based on real life issues.

Scholarships cover expenses related to attending PRIMA’s Annual Conference, including registration, meals, hotel accommodations and transportation.

WHAT IS RISK MANAGEMENT?Risk management is a formal management process that helps ensure the financial stability and safe operation of public entities, such as cities, counties, schools and other special purpose districts. Using risk management practices, state and local government agencies protect their financial, physical and human resources more effectively.

State and local governments face the potential for employee injury, property damage and liability suits in virtually all operations. Public risk managers must address personnel, financial and legal issues in all government functions, including public safety, public works, environment protection, emergency preparedness and parks and recreation. As a result, the public risk manager’s job to protect the limited resources of government is a diverse and encompassing challenge.
