Application Note:Birger EF-Mount, Modular Option -09

IntroductionThis document is a guideline for using the Birger EF-mount with AVT cameras. The Birger EF-mount can be used with any Canon EF, Canon EF-S, Tamron Di, and Tamron Di II lenses. These lenses provide motorized iris and focus control.

The Birger EF-mount -09 modular option is presently available on the AVT Prosilica GE, GX, and GT series cameras.

Ordering information• The Birger EF-mount can be ordered as a -09 modifier when purchasing a new AVT camera. • Customers with an AVT F-mount GE camera require: F to EF conversion kit (PN: 02-5026B).• Customers with an AVT F-mount GX or GT camera require: F to EF conversion (PN: 02-5031B).• Customers with an AVT C/CS-mount GE1050, GE1650, GE1660, GE1900, GE1910, GE2040 require: C to

F conversion kit (PN: 02-5027A), plus F to EF kit (PN: 02-5026B). Color cameras add IR cut filter (PN: 44-0001).

• Customers with an AVT C/CS-mount GX or GT require: C to F conversion kit (PN: 02-5037A), plus F to EF kit (PN: 02-5031B). Color cameras add IR cut filter (PN: 44-0001).

• For customers with any other C/CS-mount Prosilica series camera, Birger EF conversion is not possible.

Birger EF-Mount included parts

F-mount to Birger EF-mount conversion kit installationThe following instructions apply only to customers who have an AVT F-mount camera, and purchased the F to Birger EF conversion kit separately.

1. Remove the existing F-mount front end from the camera by loosening the three M3 x 3mm hex set screws on the outside of the F-mount adapter. Slide the mount off the camera front flange.

GE Birger Birger EF-mount GE + Birger power supply GE DB9 to Hirose adapter

GX/GT Birger GT/GX + Birger power supply

Note

GT Power over Ethernet (PoE): The Birger unit must be powered via the GT/GX + Birger power supply. Power cannot be routed out from a camera using PoE to the Birger unit.

GT cameras powered by both PoE and the power supply via the Hirose I/O connector will use the power from the Hirose I/O connector only.

2. Attach an EF-mount lens to the Birger EF-mount. Using manual focus mode on the lens, adjust the lens to the infinity setting. Slide the Birger EF-mount onto the camera front flange, and lightly set the three M3 x 3 mm hex set screws such that they are barely in contact with the camera flange.

3. Connect power to the camera and live image an object at a distance of 10 m or more with the camera. Slide the Birger EF-mount away or towards the camera body as needed, until the object is in focus. Tighten the 3 hex set screws to prevent further motion.

Birger EF lens control The Birger EF-mount uses the AVT camera RS232 (serial) port, accessible through the 12 pin Hirose con-nector on the back of the camera. Software control of the Birger mount is available through the AVT GigE SampleViewer or PvAPI SDK.

The following instructions describe Birger control through AVT GigE SampleViewer:

1. For a GX/GT camera, connect the 12 pin Birger connector to the camera. For a GE camera, connect the Birger EF-mount DB9 RS232 connector to the camera Hirose port through the provided Hirose to DB9 adaptor.

2. Connect the Birger power plug to the provided camera power supply. A GX/GT camera is connected to the power supply through a Lemo 2-pin locking power connector. Connect/disconnect by aligning the two red dots on the connector and push/pull on the connector sleeves.

Caution

The hex set screws come deeply inserted into the side of the Birger unit. Use a long enough hex tool to prevent damaging the Birger threaded hole.

Note

If using the PvAPI SDK, see the included “siotest” sample code for configuring RS232 communication programmatically.

3. Open the GigE SampleViewer. Wait until the camera is listed. This may take a few seconds. Click on the camera serial number.

4. Select the “1101” icon in the Cameras window to launch the SerialIO terminal.

5. Configure the camera serial port and click Connect.

6. Scroll down on the SerialIO window to reach the command input box at the bottom of the window.

7. Initialize the focus and iris axis by entering the following commands in the SerialIO command input box:

rm1.............. [optional] All characters typed are echoed back

in ................ Initialize the aperture motor

la................. Learn the focus range

At this point, you should hear the lens focus adjusting. If not, be sure your lens is in autofocus (AF) mode – there should be an AF/MF switch on the lens itself.

8. See the Birger EF command quick reference section for a list of Birger commands.

Note

THE SerialIO WINDOW IS NOT RESIZABLE. AVT will resolve this issue in the next official GigE SampleViewer release.
