PREFACE

This training document was developed by the Apprenticeship and Client Services Branch of the Ministry of Skills Development in consultation with representatives from the industry. These Training Standards are intended to be used by apprentice/ trainee, instructors and companies as a "blueprint" for training or as a prerequisite for Ministry accreditation/certification.

The care and maintenance of this book is the joint responsibility of the apprentice/trainee and the employer. The Training Standards were developed specifically for documenting the apprentice's/trainee's acquisition of skills.

The book becomes the only record of an apprentice's/trainee's training.

IMPORTANT DIRECTIONS TO TRAINERS

The Training Standards identify skills required for this occupation and its related training program.

These Training Standards have been written in concise statements which describe how well an apprentice/ trainee must perform each skill in order to become competent.

In using these Training Standards, trainers will be able to ensure that the apprentice/trainee is developing skills detailed for the occupation.

Trainers and apprentices/trainees are required to sign off and date the skills following each successful acquisition.

Employers participating in this training program will be designated as the Signing Authority and are required to attest to successful achievement by signing the appropriate box included at the end of each unit.

IMPORTANT DIRECTIONS TO THE APPRENTICE/TRAINEE

Apprentice

1. All hours worked for each employer(s) should be recorded in the EmployerInformation section.

2. The "Summary of Hours" should be completed, signed and dated by both theapprentice and employer when either all terms of the contract have been completedor the apprentice leaves the employ of the employer.

3. It is the responsibility of the apprentice to inform the local Apprenticeship and ClientServices Branch office regarding the following changes:

• change of employer address;

• change of apprentice name or address;

• transfer to a new employer.

4. At the fulfilment of all terms of a Contract of Apprenticeship, the Apprentice/TraineeCompletion Form must be completed and signed by the current employer. Presentthese completed and authorized Training Standards and the Apprentice/TraineeCompletion Form to your local Apprenticeship and Client Services office.

Trainee

1. Training Reports must be signed for modular trainees by a Ministry of SkillsDevelopment designed Signing Authority and forwarded to a local Apprenticeshipand Client Services Branch office.

2. At the completion of training, the Apprentice/Trainee Completion Form must becompleted and signed off by the employer/Signing Authority and submitted tolocal Apprenticeship and Client Services Branch office.

NOTICE OF COLLECTION OF PERSONAL INFORMATION

1. At any time during your apprenticeship training, you may be required to show this training standard to the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (the Ministry). You will be required to disclose the signed Apprenticeship Completion form to the Ministry in order to complete your program. The Ministry will use your personal information to administer and finance Ontario’s apprenticeship training system, including confirming your completion and issuing your certificate of apprenticeship.

2. The Ministry will disclose information about your program completion and your certificate of apprenticeship to the Ontario College of Trades, as it is necessary for the College to carry out its responsibilities.

3. Your personal information is collected, used and disclosed by the Ministry under the authority of the Ontario College of Trades and Apprenticeship Act, 2009.

As of April 8th, 2013, the Ontario College of Trades (College) has become responsible for the development and maintenance of these standards. U4560.0 PROTECT SELF AND OTHERS

GENERAL PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE

Protect self and others by wearing, adjusting, and maintaining protective clothing, equipment, and respiratory protectors; practising safe work habits, industrial hygiene, and good housekeeping; handling designated substances; following company fire procedures; operating safety equipment, lifting devices, and material handling equipment; applying basic first aid; reporting injuries, completing written safety and injury reports; conducting pre-operational check of equipment; locking out and tagging equipment.

Wear, adjust, and maintain personal protective equipment, such as eye, ear, hand, face, head, and foot protectors, to ensure correct fit and optimum protection to the wearer for the task being performed in compliance with company procedures and the Occupational Health and Safety Act (O.H.S.A.).



4560.3 Wear, adjust, and maintain respiratory protectors to ensure correct fit and optimum protection, in compliance with company procedures and the O.H.S.A.



4560.4 Practise safe work habits by staying outside of guards and barricades, wearing aprons and proper clothing (not loose or torn), confining long hair, and removing jewellery, in accordance with company procedures and the O.H.S.A.



4560.5 Follow company fire procedures, including locating and assessing the severity 'of the fire and taking appropriate action such as suppressing minor fire, activating alarm, and reporting.

Operate emergency safety equipment such as fire blankets and extinguishers, respirators, and stretchers to extinguish fires and administer first aid, so that procedures are carried out in a safe, efficient manner in accordance with health and safety regulations.



4560.7 Practise industrial hygiene by wearing proper clothing, and by washing and/or showering, to avoid contamination and injury, in compliance with company procedures and the O.H.S.A.



4560.8 Practise good housekeeping in the work place by cleaning up spills and/or leaks, keeping work area clean and clear of obstructions, and storing tools so that the potential for accident or injury is minimized, and tools and equipment are in place and available, in compliance with company procedures and the O.H.S.A.

Report injuries to supervisor promptly and efficiently ensuring that the injured person is attended to, information is recorded precisely. as to how incident occurred and future recurrence of similar accidents are prevented.



4560.11 Complete written safety and injury reports, following safety acts and regulations, so that information on Worker's Compensation Board, legal and insurance forms are complete and accurate and required deadlines are adhered to.



4560.12 Apply basic ftrst aid to treat conditions such as sudden illnesses, burns, cuts, abrasions, sprains, chemical inhalations and contaminants in eyes, so that the condition of the victim is stabilized and he/she is prepared for transport to more advanced medical care facilities.



4560.13 Lock-out and tag mechanical equipment for repair and/or maintenance, following company procedures and the O.H.S.A. including shutting down machine and process if required, ensuring that no materials can enter the equipment being repaired or maintained.

Handle designated substances using specified handling and storage equipment, so that operator is protected from injury, the environment from contamination, and procedures are followed in compliance with Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS).

Plan, prepare and organize metal fabrication process by reading and interpreting drawings; performing metal fabrication calculations; laying out pattern and transferring features of drawings to workpiece; writing, editing, and verifying layout program.



SKILLS

4561.1 Interpret and verify engineering drawings to identify correct configurations, symbols and instructions in order to produce layouts and programs needed to manufacture product.



4561.2 Perform metal fabrication calculations by using calculator, computerized calculation programs, mathematic formulae, bend allowance and heat shrinkage charts, in order to transfer engineering specifications on to workpiece material or to machine controls.

Transfer geometric features of engineering drawings on to pattern or workpiece materials using measuring tools such as verniers, callipers, rules, tapes, calculators, micrometers, protractors, squares, dividers, depth and height gauges, so that dimensions are correctly scaled in accordance with job specifications.



4561.4 Lay out pattern on smooth-faced, thin, flat, and rigid material using drafting and scribing tools, and/or lofting templates, making adjustments to pattern until prototype meets engineering specifications.

4561.5 Establish and organize the metal fabrication process by identifying operations required, equipment needed, and optimum scheduling times, so that fabrication process will meet the requirements of the engineering specifications, customer requirements, and company time schedules.

4561.6 Write, edit, and verify layout program by referring to the dimensional drawing in Computer Aided Designed (CAD) program, engineering drawings, and the machine programming manual, and checking output by printing and/or plotting layout, or cutting out sample material, and making changes to program until prototype meets engineering drawing requirements.






4562.0 VERIFY QUALITY OF PART OR PRODUCT


Verify quality of pan or product checking and recording dimensions; testing welds; finishing edges and surfaces; protecting workpiece material; and recording quality assurance data.



SKILLS

4562.1 Check and record dimension of product and pans using measuring tools and/or gauges throughout the manufacturing process, to ensure conformity of dimensions to engineering company, and customer specifications.



4562.2 Test welds by visual inspection and destructive testing using x-ray, magnaflux, drop, explosion, and/or pressure tests, to verify that weld properties meet the engineering and company specifications.

Finish edges and surface using required hand tools and machines to file, deburr, sand, and/or polish, and by visually and manually inspecting, to ensure that edges and surface are finished in accordance with engineering and customer specifications, sample pans, supplier's hand book, and American National Standards Institute (ANSI).



4561.4 Protect workpiece material from marks throughout the manufacturing process by using protective coatings and/or wrappings, and wearing gloves for handling, to maintain .quality level of the workpiece in accordance with engineering specifications and company requirements.



4562.5 Record and enter quality assurance data on required forms including process inspection forms, certificate of performance, and statistical process control charts, so that production is documented completely and accurately, in accordance with company quality assurance policies and customer requirements.

4563.0 PERFORM METAL REMOVAL OPERATIONS


Perform metal removal operations by operating and maintaining hand and bench tools; operating Conventional machines; operating and programming Numerical Control and Computer Numerical Control machines.

4563.4 Write, edit, and verify CNC cutting program referring to engineering drawings and machine programming manual, and checking output by printing and/or plotting layout, making changes to program so that machine performs correct series of cutting operations to produce prototype, in accordance with engineering, customer, and cutting list specifications.

Perform punching operations by selecting punching machines; operating and maintaining hand and bench tools; operating conventional, numerical control (NC), and computer numerical control (CNC) punching equipment; writing, editing and verifying CNC punching programs.

4564.1 Select punching machine(s) by using information in engineering drawings, layouts, and/or job instructions, to ensure that machine is the correct one needed to punch workpiece material, in accordance with material thickness, hole complexity, quantity of parts, and available tooling and equipment.



4564.2 Operate and maintain hand and bench tools required for the job so that tool selected is the correct size and type needed to perform optimum punching operations and tools are in good condition.

Perform forming operations by selecting forming machines and dies; operating and maintaining hand and bench tools; sequencing bending operations; operating conventional, numerical control (NC) and computer numerical control (CNC) brakes, manual and power forming-roll and tube bender machines; writing, editing, and verifying CNC forming programs.

4565.4 Sequence bending operations by identifying required types of bends, hardware, and machines, so that bending operations are done in accordance with company time limits, engineering specifications and job requirements.



4565.5 Operate conventional, NC, and CNC brakes ensuring correct top punches and bottom dies are selected in order to perform bending operations in accordance with engineering drawings and job specifications.

Check output by printing and/or plotting layout, and making changes to the program so that machine performs correct series of forming operations to produce prototype in accordance with engineering and customer specifications.






4566.0 JOIN WORKPIECE METAL


Join workpiece metal by selecting type of weld; operating spot, metal-inert gas (MIG), tungsten-inert gas (TIG), and arc welding equipment; oxy-acetylene brazing and soldering equipment.



SKILLS

4566.1 Select type of weld(s) required for joining of metal by using information in operating manuals, charts, engineering specifications, ensuring that weld is the correct one for type of workpiece material and equipment and to form edge or shape of join.



4566.2 Operate spot welder ensuring that correct electrodes and machine settings are selected to produce clean and firm joins with a minimum amount of the flller material, in accordance with engineering and customer specifications.

Operate oxy-acetylene brazing and soldering equipment including torches, tanks, regulators, gauges, filler rods, bench furnace, irons, solder bars, acids, resins, and fluxes, to produce clean and firm joins or seams with a minimum amount of filler material, in accordance with American Welding Society Code (AWS), Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) standards, engineering and customer specifications.

4566.4 Operate metal-inen gas (MIG), tungsten-inen gas (TIG), and arc welding equipment ensuring that correct materials and tools are selected to produce clean and firm joins with a minimum amount of filler material, in accordance with operating manuals, chans, company procedures, engineering and customer specifications.






4567.0 INSTALL HARDWARE AND ASSEMBLE COMPONENTS


Install hardware and assemble components by selecting hardware and adhesives; organizing hardware installation; setting up assembly machines or tools; and assembling components.

4567.1 Select correct hardware and adhesives such as hinges, rivets, and handles to assemble workpiece by using information in engineering drawings and customer specifications.



4567.2 Organize and list sequence of hardware installation process by identifying type of workpiece materials, quantity of pans needed, and availability of installation equipment, so that the finished product is installed in accordance with sample, engineering drawings, company time schedules and customer specifications.

4567.3 Set up assembly machines or tools including pin-setter, rivet gun, tapping gun, jigs, and fixtures, to perform correct fabrication and assembly operations, in accordance with manufacturers' guidelines, engineering drawings and customer specifications.
