Approaches of Educational Technology

Hardware approach to ET
It is the application of physical science and engineering technology for developing mechanical or electromechanical equipments for instructional purposes.
It is based on the concept of service, i.e, using technology in education.
It is the byproduct of the scientific and technological development of the 20th century.
3/18/2016 2 Dr Priya Mathew SJCEM
It refers to the application of technology to instrumentation to the process of teaching.
It mechanizes the process of teaching through the use of audio- visual aids like, radio, television, tape recorder, videotape, computers, projectors, chart, models, etc.
Teachers would be able to deal with more students with less expenditure in educating them.

Software Approach to ET
It is originated from the effort of Skinner, Gagne, Crowder and other psychologists.
It originated from behavioural sciences and their applied aspects concerned with the psychology of learning.
Psychology of learning provide solid technology for bringing the desirable behavioural changes in the students
It emphasis on the scientific way of teaching, designing, structuring and implementing teaching to achieve well defined objectives.

Dr Priya Mathew SJCEM
It is characterized by statement of precise objectives, selection of suitable learning techniques, reinforcement of correct responses and constant evaluation.
It is basically stands for the technique of developing and utilizing software.
The aspects which come under software approach are models, programmed learning, micro teaching, strategies like team teaching, CAI, CAL, FIACS, Keller plan etc.

Hardware
• It is based on the concept
of service provided
• Examples or appliances:
Radio, T.V, record player,
film projector, slide
projector, OHP, LCD,
computer, camera, printer,
web camera, UPS, etc.
Software
• It is based on preparation of
learning material
• Examples: programmed
learning materials, modules,
website, charts, pictures,
software packages, MS
word, MS excel, ppt

Hardware
• It does not contain the
content to be transacted
• Teacher/ practitioner is not
directly involved in this
technology
• Rapid changes take place
Software
• It includes the subject matter
content- concepts, methods,
procedures, principles to be
transacted.
• Teacher/Practitioner is part
of the preparation of
learning material (software)
• Changes in soft ware
technology takes more time
for implementation

OR SY ST E M APPROACH
Related with the concept of system engineering
Owes it ORIGIN to the computer science.
Here Technology stands for systematic way to
design ,carry out and evaluate the total process of
education in term of specific objective .

System Approach
Educational technology is the system of 5 M’s System : a set of things working together as parts of a
mechanism or an interconnecting network; a complex whole.
ET implies planning, implementing and evaluating as system in education according to scientific principles so as to achieve the educational objectives.
Input, process and output are the 3 different but related components involved in system approach.
It act as a link between hardware and software approach

Input : pupils, curriculum, teaching learning
materials, other teaching learning facilities
together with the expertise of the teacher
form the components of input
Process
1. Procedure which anticipate a desired goal
2. Teaching learning process
3. How the teacher uses his materials for the
expected changes
Output
final product anticipated
Optimum quality to be produced
Expected learning outcomes
