DBT is an evidence-based program

developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan, Professor

of Psychology at the University of

Washington. DBT was originally developed

to treat adult women with thoughts of

suicide, then expanded to persons with

Borderline Personality Disorder. DBT has

since been adapted for adolescents.

The ultimate goal of DBT is to help

adolescents build the skills necessary to

envision and create a meaningful life that

feels worth living.

Specifically, DBT targets the following

behaviorally-oriented goals:

Eliminating life-threatening and self-injurious behaviors.

Decreasing behaviors that are causing other problems with family, school, and/or peers.

Increasing coping skills, such as learning to deal with conflict, learning to cope with painful emotions, and improving self-esteem and self-care.

Adolescents and their parents focus on the

following DBT skills:

CORE MINDFULNESS: Become more fully aware of emotions, thoughts, impulses, and behaviors.

DISTRESS TOLERANCE: Learn ways to get through difficult times without making impulsive decisions they may regret.

EMOTION REGULATION: Learn cognitive and behavioral techniques for reducing vulnerability to, and enhancing the ability to cope with, overwhelming emotions.

INTERPERSONAL EFFECTIVENESS: Learn how to maintain healthy relationships, manage conflict, and maintain self-respect.

WALKING THE PATH: Learn to live a life more balanced by avoiding the emotional and behavioral extremes that often lead to stress.
