Your Award Winning Starliner is Published Bi-Monthly by the Northern Illinois Black Hawk Chapter of the Studebaker Drivers Club Inc.
- About the Studebaker Drivers Club - From the SDC Website - he Studebaker Drivers Club was founded on August 6, 1962
by the late Harry Barnes along with Norah Barnes, Tony
Caralla, Harold E. Kraft, Arthur J. McIntyre, Ronald L.
Nelson & Robert E. Schaffrath.
The purpose of the Studebaker Drivers Club (SDC) was, and
continues to be, to honor the Studebaker automobile and all of the
Studebaker-related products. The SDC sponsors an annual
International Meet where Studebaker owners from across North
America bring their Studebakers and families for a week of fun,
showing their vehicles, sharing information and memories, and even
participate in concours judging. The SDC International Meets are
hosted by a local SDC chapter and held in various locations. In
addition, the SDC is organized into several zones, each zone having
an annual Zone Meet that attracts Studebakers from across their area
and beyond. Like the International Meet, all Zone Meets offer a
number of activities, as well as a "display only" and concours judged
car show.
Across the US, Canada, and around the world, there are more than
100 chartered SDC local chapters and more than 12,500 members.
Each local chapter conducts a broad variety of events throughout the
year, ranging from cruises to car shows and picnics to poker runs.
Membership in the Studebaker Drivers Club is a prerequisite for
joining a local chapter. Most SDC members are also members of at
least one local chapter. You don't have to own a Studebaker in order
to join the Studebaker Drivers Club, you just have to have an interest
in them.
- SDC - Black Hawk Chapter Official Charter Statement - he Black Hawk Chapter is the officially chartered
representative of the Studebaker Drivers Club Inc. for the
Northeastern Illinois area. The Studebaker Drivers Club is
dedicated to the preservation of the Studebaker name and
Studebaker-related vehicles produced by the company during its
period in the transportation field. A sincere interest in this cause is
the only requirement for membership. Vehicle ownership is not a
requirement. The Black Hawk Chapter fully supports the parent
Studebaker Drivers Club and requires membership therein.
The Studebaker Drivers Club (SDC) provides its members with
yearly national meetings, a monthly publication [Turning Wheels],
technical assistance, historical data, assistance in parts and vehicle location and a membership roster on a national level.
The Black Hawk Chapter provides the same services on the local
level, including monthly activities, six bi-monthly issues of the
Starliner, dinner meetings, picnics, driving events and fellowship and
technical sessions. See SDC Turning Wheels for SDC National Officers.
The Starliner is the official publication of the Black Hawk Chapter,
SDC, serving Studebaker, Avanti and other Studebaker-related
enthusiasts in the Northeastern Illinois area. Neither the club nor the
Editor is responsible for the accuracy or veracity of want-ads
contained herein. Reasonable attempts are made to insure the
accuracy of everything we publish. Monthly meetings are normally
held the 2nd Tuesday of each month. Please see Activities Calendar in
the "Bi-Monthly" Starliner for the monthly meeting times and location or check out our website.
For questions regarding directions, etc., please call an Activities
Committee Officer, the President, or Membership Officer for
assistance. Membership Applications: Please contact Membership
Officer listed in this newsletter. If you have any questions, please
call an officer or for SDC details, contact The Studebaker Drivers
Club, Inc. - phone 763-420-7829 or Fax at 763-420-7849 or contact
BHC membership officer. The deadline for submissions for the
Starliner of articles, meeting minutes, activities, advertisements, etc.,
is the 20th of the month (or earlier if you like), as we try to publish
by the 24th of every other month. January-February, March-April, May-June, July-August, September-October, November-December.

- Prez Sez & Editalk "Annual BHC Holiday Party & Meeting" - By: Don Cuddihee, Jr. -
ur Christmas Holiday Party at
Alpine Banquet Haus on
December 17th, 2017 was a
huge success. We had nearly sixty
people and the food was every bit as
great as it has been in previous years.
Jerry Malecki, Katie Hodak, Gisela
Cuddihee and our young "Larkett"
Tara Cuddihee called out ticket
numbers and distributed the "White
Elephant Gifts". The joy, laughter and
camaraderie was warm spirited as was
the Holiday Cheer. See photos.
Regarding our Starliner BHC
Newsletter, due to my personal time
constraints, as both your President and
Newsletter Editor, I proposed at our
meeting on 1-9-18 that the Starliner
publish bi-monthly. Motions were
made and seconded and the club voted
in favor of The Starliner publishing bi-
monthly (every other month) from this
issue on. Our six annual Starliner
issues will be January-February,
March-April, May-June, July-August,
September-October, November-
December. Other successful SDC
Chapters have published a bi-monthly
newsletter for many years.
We have selected a new venue for
our monthly meetings. The name of
the restaurant is "Shoeless Joes" in
Addison, Illinois on 1480 W. Lake
Street just a few blocks east of the 355
Tollway. Their phone number is (847)
773-9147. BHC Club members Frank
Lillig, Jerry Malecki and myself had
lunch there on January 3rd and the
restaurant has a large closed off
meeting room that will be reserved
exclusively for our meetings and
programs. The food tasted good.
I proposed to the club at our 1-9-18
meeting that we meet at this new
location. Motions were made and
seconded and the club voted in favor
of future meetings at "Shoeless Joe's"
restaurant in Addison. Exceptions to
this are when we meet other places in
April - Spring Brunch, August-
Railway Museum and December-
Holiday Party. Therefore, our next
meeting will be held at Shoeless Joe's
on 2-13-18.
This year our biennial SDC BHC
Club Officer Elections will be held
at our Spring Brunch on April 15th at our new Spring Brunch location -
the Lincoln Inn and Banquets in
Batavia, IL on 1345 S. Batavia
Avenue. BHC Activities Officer Jay
Crites has organized this for us and, as
many of you know, the local Chrysler
Club has brunched there for many
years and they like it. Banquet cost is
$15.95 plus tax and gratuity per
person. You probably also know that
our old Spring Brunch spot Casey's
Restaurant is closed permanently.
Regarding the upcoming elections, I
am looking for someone to head our
BHC Nomination Committee for the
upcoming elections held in April at
the Spring Brunch. Please call me if
you are interested at 630-776-1454.
Open BHC Officer positions are for
the office of President, Vice-
President, Treasurer and Secretary.
Newly elected BHC Officers will take
their office on July 1, 2018. Many of
you Black Hawk members are fully
qualified to serve in one of these
offices. If you attend our meetings
regularly, or are willing to, please call
me at 630-776-1454. Most of the
officers of our club during the last 50
years of our clubs existence were not
retirees. They had families and full-
time jobs and were still able to carve
out a little time every month to devote
to serving our club. If you work full-
time or even if you don't you can still
consider giving of your time and talent
to our most wonderful and very
successful club. You could make a
big difference in our BH Chapter's
continued success. It's elections time,
so now is your time to get out of the
dugout and step up to the plate!
BATTER UP!!!!
Lastly, BHC Vice President Bob
Markert is, as you know, our Program
Committee/Guest Speaker Chair and I
would appreciate you folks giving him
your ideas and material help for our
upcoming programs at our regular
monthly meetings. Please contact him
at 630-852-9892 with you ideas and
assistance. We are looking for
presentations, slide shows, and videos
on Studebakers and car related themes
to make our meetings more interesting
and informative. That's it folks! "Keep
that Greasy Side Down" and I will see
you all on down the road! /Don C./
E-mail from Bill Mitchell on 1/6/18:
Regarding taking train to and from
Tacoma Washington for the 2018
SDC International Meet
called Amtrak again today. Each
seat is $158.00 each way, leaving on
Sunday the 26th of August and
returning on Sunday September 2nd,
2018. From looking at the train prices it
seems that a larger than normal number
of people are traveling to Tacoma on the
date of the SDC International Meet. It
may be that I am not the only one that
has considered taking the train. We
need to let people know that rail prices
can change based on the number of
passengers. Bookings can be cancelled
for a full refund up to 24 hours before
boarding time. Today a single person in
a roomette rate is $1,400 and a roomette
for 2 is $1,900. I will take a coach seat
at $158. Also, the cheapest seat is
$10.00 cheaper, but not refundable. For
more info. contact me (Bill Mitchell) at
847-635-6785 or email me at

-Replacing a Fuel Sending Unit Float- Article & Photos By: Eric DeRosa
Are you tired of driving your collector car, and never knowing how much gas you have? I encountered this problem on both my old Studebakers. In each case, the problem proved to be a sending unit float. On my Lark, the solution was easy, I just ordered a new sending unit; I did not have this option for my 1949 2R-5 truck, as new replacements are not available.
Before you take on this job, make sure you know what the problem is. After accessing the sending unit - on my old truck it is under the seat (figure 1), check your wiring at the both the gauge and the sending unit, and pay special attention to assure you have a good ground between the sending unit and the tank, and the tank and the chassis. If you then feel it is the sending unit, the next step is to remove it. Be sure to take a picture or draw yourself a diagram so you can remember how it is oriented in the tank!
After you get the sending unit out, hook up the wires (be sure to ground it too) turn on your ignition, and move the rod. If the gauge now works, you most likely have a float which no longer floats. If it is original, it is made out of cork, and after nearly 70 years, the floats for my truck were quite heavy causing them to sink in the tank. (figure 2)
Now, where do you find a new float? I started looking on-line at Summit for a float which I thought might work. I wanted something that would fit on the rod, as opposed to having to modify the rod to bend around a new float. I decided to order part CIN-SN33F, which set me back $14.97. It is a plastic float and comes attached to a rod, so you will need to remove the float from both units. (figures 3 this page & figure 4 on following page) figure 3

After you remove the old crumbling cork floats, you may install the new plastic float from Summit. (figure 5). Reinstall the sending unit, using a new gasket and copper washers as needed, hook up the wiring and check your work. In my case, for the first time in years, I have a working gas gauge! (figure 6)
