Get out now! Run! It’s looming closer and you haveno possible way of avoiding it. Mother’s Day!It’s Mother’s Day every day at my house.Every day I get hugs and sticky-taped cereal-boxgifts, songs made up for me, little helpers handingout pegs and drawing up shopping lists.I really don’t need a big ribbon-wrapped day all ofits own to celebrate my stretchmarks. It’s just toomuch pressure, I think - for me, for the kids andprobably, most of all, for my husband.Any Mother’s Day gift at my house is not going tobe a gold bracelet or a complete spa package. Whenyou’ve got a four-year-old and a five-year-old you’redealing with a limited budget, unlimited stubborn-ness and a big imagination. Not to mention a fasci-nation with air-dry clay and textas. For me, there is nothing more terrifying than sittingup against the pillows listening to the kids make mebreakfast in bed.Ever had pancakes with tomato sauce and Vegemite?Ever listed to the clunk of tea-cups and a four-year-old insisting to his father that he “can so” pour thekettle?Ever considered the logistical difficulties of balanc-ing the aforementioned tea and pancakes on yourknees, over your new doona cover, and still smilingappreciatively at the litle jumping beans when re-ally what you want most is a quick pee and a showerbecause you’re already half an hour late for work(well, I will be, because there will be sport pics totake that morning).Yes, yes - it all sounds very ‘bah humbug’, I know. And I hope that, like Scrooge, I really am in theminority here in thinking that these celebrations areslightly redundant (and completely commercial) -even if my kids’ sentiments definitely aren’t.This year, I think I’m going to take control and breakthe whole tea-and-vegemite-on-bedlinen cycle. I’mgoing to take the kids camping (after all, you al-ways end up getting up early when you’re out camp-ing and swags are tea-proof).Then when I get my annual gift of texta-colouredair-dry clay ashtrays (please note, I don’t smoke)I’ll be able to use them straightaway to ferry waterfrom the car to clean off the swag. Most of all, I’ll be with my kids and maybe, justmaybe, this Mother’s Day they’ll see their mum ather best - her tea-covered, pancake and sauced,shower-free best.Happy Mother’s Day to you too. And, just quietly -bah humbug!

Crackdown on country drivers

SES stages pit rescue

FAR NORTH…Far North andOutback police will saturate localroads in April and May in an ef-fort to reduce dangerous driving.SA road fatalities have alreadysoared this year and local policeare keen to put a stop to the trend.“Unfortunately the Far North lo-cal service area has featured dis-proportionately in these state-widestatistics,” Sgt Richard Hobbs toldThe Monitor.“A fact that hit home recently withthe death near Port Augusta of twoof our own locals.“As a result of these statistics theSA police have implemented theRural Highway Saturation Pro-gram to run from April 7, to May25, 2005 on four of the states coun-try highways.“One of those selected, due to itsbad record in recent times, is theStuart Highway, the transport ar-tery to Roxby Downs.”“Last year’s operation saw a largeincrease in the number of policepatrols on the Stuart Highway dur-ing high risk times and this willcontinue for the 2005 Rural High-way Saturation Program.“An examination of the statisticsarising from last year’s operationshowed that Roxby Downs resi-dents were over-represented in thedrivers detected breaking basicroad rules.“Unfortunately, the lessons havenot been learnt.”In the first four days of this year’sRural Highway Saturation Pro-gram:A 19-year-old Roxby Downs ‘P’

plater was detected driving at154km/h.A 40-year-old man from RoxbyDowns was detected speeding at155km/h, and;A 21-year-old man fromBrinkworth was detected travel-ling at a horrific 193km/h.“Due to our remote location, noone in Roxby Downs can affordto loose their licence,” Sgt Hobbs

said.“None of us can really throw awayseveral hundred dollars in a fine.“But even more importantly, noneof us want to say farewell to an-other member of our community.”The Rural Highway SaturationProgram will focus on the ‘Fatal5’ causes of road collisions -speeding, seat belts, fatigue, drinkdriving and vulnerable road users.

STAYING ALIVE... Local road users will be under closescrutiny during a police crackdown on major highways.

ROXBY DOWNS...Roxby Downs SESconducted a mock rescue exercise lastweek.More than 10 local volunteers reenacteda ‘pit rescue’- utilising the RoxbyDowns Leisure Centre pump room fa-cilities.Volunteers faced the practical difficul-ties of treating and transporting a casu-alty out from a deep pit.“The exercise had a real focus on team-work with practical experience in ropeand knot work and lifting a casualty outof the pit in a stretcher,” Roxby DownsSES unit manager Lol Wilton told The

Monitor.“It was a good morale exercise as well, and it keeps volunteers interested,”she said. The exercise will be repeated nextmonth in a cooperative training exer-cise with Andamooka SES.Pit rescue is considered especially rel-evant for the Andamooka team be-cause of the town’s opal mining shaftsscattered throughout the landscape,Mrs Wilton said. The exercise contributes to the SESvolunteers’ basic rescue certificatetraining.

Aerial baiting aims toprotect wild bilbiesOLYMPIC DAM…The Arid Recov-ery Reserve will work to protectbilbies living outside the reserve’sboundaries through a program ofaerial baiting on May 3 and 4.This is the fourth in a series of AridRecovery trials testing different aerialbaiting methods to control foxes andcats on a landscape scale.“The purpose is to develop a 10kmradius buffer zone around the outsideof the reserve - this is especially im-portant now that we have bilbies liv-ing outside the reserve,” project co-ordinator Brydie Hill told The Moni-tor.“In 2004 12 bilbies were releasedoutside the reserve - eight were killedby feral cats. There are also other free-living bilbies outside the reserve thathave dug out under the fence.”The baiting has been timed to coin-cide with the high numbers of feralanimals recorded at this time of year.“In March and April we have caughtrecord numbers of feral cats in thetraps set around the reserve - in onemonth more cats were caught than forthe whole of last year,” Ms Hill said.“Therefore, we feel that it is an ex-cellent time to conduct baiting.”The 1080 baits used in the programare specially designed to be attractive

to cats.“The active ingredient in 1080 ispresent in Australia’s native vegetationgiving native animals a much highertolerance to the poison than introducedspecies such as cats and foxes,” MsHill told The Monitor.“Unfortunately it is also toxic to do-mestic pets so it is important for petowners to ensure they are aware of thearea being baited and that any domes-tic pets exercised in the baited area aremuzzled.”The Arid Recovery Reserve is a cat, rabbit and fox-proof reserve, situated20km north of Roxby Downs, wherea series of locally-extinct mammalshave been reintroduced – including theWestern Barred Bandicoot, GreaterBilby, Burrowing Bettong and Stick-Nest Rat.Feral rabbits, cats and foxes have allbeen eradicated within the 60km2 re-serve site, which is currently beingexpanded to 86km2

Baiting around the reserve is con-ducted yearly to reduce pressure on thereserve’s fence boundaries from feralspecies, and to reduce predation onnative species in the area surroundingthe reserve. For more information about baitingand ‘exclusion areas’, turn to Page 12.

OLYMPIC DAM…BHP Billiton has cleared an-other hurdle in its $9.2 billion takeover of WMCResources after the Australian Competition andConsumer Commission (ACCC) approved the trans-action. The acquisition would make BHP Billitonthe world’s third largest nickel producer and sec-ond largest copper producer. But the AustralianCompetition and Consumer Commission said itwould not substantially reduce market competition.BHP is still waiting for clearance from regulators inthe United States and European Union, and the ac-quisition remains subject to approval by its share-holders. BHP made its $7.85 a share offer for WMCin March, trumping a $7 a share bid by smaller rivalXstrata. WMC’s board has recommended sharehold-ers accept the offer and agreed to a break fee of $92million payable to BHP Billiton in certain circum-stances, including in the event of a successful com-peting takeover proposal. BHP Billiton is the world’slargest diversified mining company. Even withoutWMC, it is already the world’s largest producer ofseaborne coal, the third largest iron ore exporter, asignificant oil and gas producer, and is developingcapacity to become the world’s number one lead andzinc producer. AV JENNINGS…Investors are captivatedwith AVJennings pre-planned homes andprecincts, with figures showing more than50 per cent of the company’s pre-plannedhomes being bought by investors. An increasing number of interstate buyersare attracted to South Australian real estategiven the rate of affordability and attrac-tive median house prices compared to ourEastern states counterparts, and many lo-cals are choosing pre-planned homes assound investment options.AVJennings executive general manager Pe-ter Jackson said many people are maximiz-ing the opportunity of pre-planned homesby renting them in the short term with a longterm view to moving in and making themhome at a later date, finding that pre-plannedhomes are the hassle-free option to owninga brand new home.“Pre-planned precincts are attractive to thediscerning buyer because they are com-pletely designed and built, in a controlledand landscaped environment, with every el-ement considered from the interiorpaintwork to the irrigation system in thegarden for that increasingly popular, lowmaintenance lifestyle,” said Mr Jackson.“Popular in the UK and the United States,pre-planned precincts are becoming betterknown and accepted in Australia and are oneof the thriving living options of the future.”Mr Jackson said pre-planned townhousesand terraces continue to prove popular withinvestors, and that sometimes it is moreabout the investment potential and the lo-cation, than the house type.“When people weigh up the benefits of apre-planned home compared to buying es-tablished property or building a new home, the pre-planned option tends to come outahead of the rest.“With superior designs, perfect for today’slifestyles, with everything already thoughtof from the functionality of the floor de-signs through to the inclusions and finishes,

right down to the landscaping.”AVJennings is leading the way with pre-plannedliving, with terraces, townhouses, warehousesand single and two storey homes among its va-riety of precincts on offer.Often located in near-city pockets of land inestablished locations, many new precincts arealso created among master-planned develop-ments, offering a stylish and exclusive alterna-tive for quality housing.Pre-planned precincts located within Northgatehave been experiencing significant investmentreturns as the new, award winning suburb be-comes a thriving, established neighbourhood.According to recent figures supplied by theValuer General, Land Services Group, medianhouse prices within Northgate have increasedalmost 15 per cent over the last year, while landwithin Northgate has experienced growth of justover 40 per cent.Neighbouring Northfield has also enjoyedbuoyant times influenced by the success andfinale of Northgate with median house pricesincreasing over 25 per cent.“Land and home values have continuallystrengthened at Northgate over the years,” ex-plained Mr Jackson.“Capital growth in the suburb has been one ofthe state’s best performing. With all land allot-ments within Northgate released and only halfa dozen still available, the only remaining op-portunity to move up to the new suburb isthrough investing in a pre-planned home orhouse and land package.”AVJennings’ pre-planned projects under wayinclude the Aviator precinct at Northgate – a22-dwelling precinct featuring terraces, townhouses and warehouses; Folland Place ad-jacent to Northgate – a 18 townhouse precinctset around a secluded landscaped courtyard;and a new project at Glynde, where 34 homeswill be built around a central reserve, creatingan exclusive and modern alternative in an es-tablished area.To find out more about AVJennings range ofpre-planned homes, call 131 878.

Season 2005 - Meet the coaches

OLYMPIC DAM…Wayne‘Woody’ Turner, 50, brings alifetime love of Aussie Rules tohis new role as coach for theOlympic Dam Devils. As assistant coach to TimLange in 2003, Woody has asolid knowledge of the club’sstrengths, complemented by hisown long years on the field.Woody began his own footballcareer in Wirrabara as a 15-year-old.Throughout the 70s and 80s heplayed in the Northern AreasLeague and the Spencer GulfLeague. He played 151 games and wonsix premierships with Centralsin Port Augusta and achieved alifetime membership. He coached Central Augusta in1978, 79 and 80; North Ad-elaide U15s country side from1997-1999, and was appointedregional development officerfor North Adelaide in 1999.“I just love the game,” Woodytold The Monitor.“I even played four or fivegames for OD in 2003 – I wastheir oldest recruit and I kickedfour goals in one of thosegames.“But this year, the Devils havea very young side.“We’re confident, but we’re nottaking anything for granted.“We’ll start at square one, likeeveryone else, at the beginningof the season.“We’ve lost a few players, butthen we’ve recruited prettystrongly over the off-season.“Olympic Dam is a very pro-fessional club though, full ofgreat people, hard workers –and that’s one of the club’sgreatest strengths.”For Woody - who began his ca-reer in the green and gold ofWirrabara in 1970 - donningthe same green and gold for Ol-ympic Dam in 2005 seems afitting way to continue his loveof the game.

SAINTS COACH... Chris Warrior, 43, will coach the Coober PedyFootball Club Saints in 2005. An original player from CooberPedy’s original time in the league as the ‘Detonators’, Warriorsays the team is enthusiastic and keen to hit the field.“We’re rapt to be in the league again - we’re all really lookingforward to it,” he told The Monitor.“There’s a lot of enthusiasm at training and plenty of young fel-lows playing. Community support has been pretty good too.“We’ve got a relatively young team - some have been playingwith the Southern APY team and the Alice Springs League for awhile now.“What they don’t have in experience they make up for in enthusi-asm. Hopefully they can put it all out on the field next week.”Coober Pedy will have a bye this weekend, with their first gameagainst the Miners on May 7, 2005.However, Warrior will be in Roxby Downs this week for the firstmatch of the season to ‘scope out the competition’.

FOOTBALL UMPIRES...Woomera andDistricts Football League is seeking um-pires to support the 2005 football season.Long-time local umpire and league presi-dent Graham Warren has called on the“sideline and Monday morning experts to“support their sport” and prove their ex-pertise by donning the whites.“There are a lot of guys out here who don’tplay any more, but they can still be part ofthe game by umpiring,” Warren told TheMonitor. “It’s a paid position and there’s

the chance to learn in the junior gamesbefore umpiring a senior game.“We only have two umpires available forthe first game of the season - I’m 48 now,and I’m just not keen to come out of re-tirement after umpiring locally for 12years. It’s time for someone else to takeup the flags.”To learn about umpire training and volun-teering, phone Graham Warren - 0407 121777 or email umpires coordinator AndrewTonkin - [email protected].

HORNRIDGE...Tony Rigden,35, faces his second year ascoach of the growing sideHornridge.Rigden believes his team’s newinflux of players, coupled withCoober Pedy Football Club’sintroduction to the league, promises a real up “shake-up”in the ladder this year.“We’ve got a few new playersthat are looking pretty good atthe moment and there’s a fewchanges from last year,” Rigdensaid.“We want to hit the field hardthat first game and come outstrong - then we’ll just take itfrom there.“It’s going to be great to haveCoober Pedy in the competi-tion. Having a real unknown inthe league could mean somesurprises for the local teams -it’s going to be great for thespectators as well as the teamsthemselves.”Rigden said the on-field enthu-siasm had been buoyed by afeeling of confidence in theHornidge committee this year.“Everyone seems a bit keener,a bit more positive this year,”he said.“We’ve got a strong committeebehind us and now we’ve justgot to get out there and play ourbest.”

MINERS COACH...PaulClark, 39.

ROXBY DOWNS...Paul Clarkwill walk out onto the field ascoach of the Miners for the firsttime in 2005.However, Clark has been a fa-miliar wearer of the red andwhite since 1999.Clark is calling on his team to“put in that extra 10 or 20 percent” this year in the hopes ofpulling in the premiership thatslipped through their fingers in2004.“It’s been demoralising to knowwe had the talent out their onthe field last year but to comehome empty-handed,” he said.“To be that close and not get itreally hurt the club but we’vegot a lot of talent and a lot ofcommittee support and we’rehungry for it this year.“We’ve been around the markfor five years or so and it’s timeto give that little bit extra.”Clark comes to the positionwith several years of experi-ence coaching both junior andsenior sides in Wallaroo.“I just love the footy life - thecomeraderie and watching theyoung kids improve in theirgame,” Clark said. “The Min-ers are a real family-orientedclub and that support shows onthe field.“This year, we’re calling on theteam, the supporters and thespectators just to give that littlebit more.”
