HDRG SummitOn the front page of this month's issue isan in-depth article about what took placeat this year's Heavy DutyRemanufacturing Group Summit in LasVegas on January 18th. The presentationsthis year were all thought provoking andhelped many attendees better understandthe challenges and the opportunitiesfacing our industry.

In future issues we will devote more spaceto some of these topics and provide morediscussion time at future clinics andconventions of APRA.

This spring we will be visiting SpringfieldRemanufacturing Co. in Springfield,Missouri. The dates of the meeting will beannounced shortly. It will be a combinedclinic of several APRA Divisions.

Congratulations to ArvinMeritorThis years winner of APRAs Third HeavyDuty Remanufacturer of the Year Awardwas ArvinMeritor. The two previouswinners were Mike Hill of PrecisionRebuilders in St. Clair, Missouri and JohnWeller of Weller Truck Parts in GrandRapids, Michigan. There were a number ofentries this year for the award and weexpect that next year the number of entrieswill be significantly higher.

China Looks at RemanI attended a meeting at CaterpillarsWashington, D.C. office recently with fiveofficials from the Chinese government whoare trying to grasp the importance ofremanufacturing and its positive contribu-tions to the environment. Their task is tomove forward as rapidly as possible todevelop the remanufacturing industry inChina for a variety of products includingmotor vehicle parts. This remanufacturingindustry will be developed for their ownmarket to handle their ever-growingmanufacturing base. They recognize thatthe remanufacturing industry is environ-mentally friendly as well as an engine forjob creation, two key points of real interestto them.

In addition to myself, and some peoplefrom Caterpillar, we had APRAs PastChairman Paul Schuck and Secretary, JoeKripli in attendance. There were manyquestions and issues discussed about theprocess of remanufacturing and theimportant part it plays in our economy. After all we have over 75 years of experi-ence and the Chinese want to learn fromthe mistakes that we have made over theyears.

They also understood that encouragingmore remanufacturing and recycling willhelp them clean up their own environment,a very important issue in their country.

WTO and RemanBack in December 2005 the U.S. TradeOffice developed a white paper onmarket access for remanufactured prod-ucts. The idea was to promote the exportof reman products as well as cores and toremove non-tariff trade barriers. Unfortu-nately, some countries limit trade inremanufactured products as well asestablish unreasonable tariffs on cores. The U.S. government's position is thatremanufactured products should not betreated as used products or waste, butinstead receive trade treatment similar tonew products.

Governments move slowly, but they domove. We are beginning to see some real

movement and interest by other countriesoutside the U.S. and Europe toward abetter appreciation of remanufacturing.

Under the premise that a rising tide liftsall boats, this will increase the image ofremanufacturing worldwide and willincrease the trade in all types of equipmentprimarily from the U.S. for use in theseever-growing reman facilities worldwide.

The overall theme from our CommerceDepartment and our U.S. Trade Office isthat remanufacturing has become the 4thR in their Reduce, Reuse, Recycleinitiative.

This effort will lift our industry from theHidden Green Giant to a very VisibleGreen Giant. So, stay tuned for moregrowth as the consumers of the worldunderstand more about what weve knownabout remanufacturing for over 75 years.

Green to GoldRecently I had the privilege of hearing apresentation by Andrew Winston on hisbook Green to Gold. He discussed theGreen Recovery that is going on atmany companies in todays challengingmarket. His theme was to Get Lean, GetSmart, Get your employees engaged inyour company and Get Creative so youwill emerge from this downturn on topwhen business improves. Going green isnot a costit lowers cost. Green is doingmore with less, and its about creatingjobs.

While the political debate continues oncarbon footprints, cap and trade ofgreenhouse gas emissions, climate changeand a host of related discussions, corpo-rate social responsibility makes goodbusiness sense because it leads to profits.

Please rest assured that your associationis beginning to look at these issues andhow they will impact our industry. We doknow several things now:

Remanufacturing reduces greenhousegas emissions, saves energy (up to85% over a new product), reducesproducts going to landfills, reduces

air pollution, saves natural resources, and creates jobs, lots of jobs. And, italso has the unique benefit of savingmost of the capital and the labor thatwent in to manufacturing the originalproduct.

With all these positive benefits ourgovernment leaders should be devotingmore of their efforts and energy toencourage more remanufacturing.

Take Aways from this issue: If youre going to start being green

make sure you start with improvingyour efficiency

Start keeping track of the amount ofscrap metal you send to the recycler. And, start keeping track of theamount of product you remanufacturethat does not go to the recycler. Postthese two figures prominently in yourbusiness for your customers and youremployees to see.

Let your customers know that you arean environmental parts supplier

In MemoryOn page 12 of this issue is a write-up onthe passing of Guy Plourde, a long timemember of APRA.

Also, Dick Wells who was a friend of manypeople in the industry passed awayrecently at the age of 75. I first met DickWells in 1994 when our partnership withMEMA and SEMA started with thePAACE Show in Mexico City. His careerwith Peterson Publishing, the National HotRod Association and SEMA was out-standing and his contributions numerous. He gave me some sound advise on severaloccasions and I will be ever grateful.

Both of these gentlemen will be missed bymany people. !

by Mohammad Samii, Sammy's Auto-Electric Service, Inc., ASE, SAE

    AUTO ELECTRIC CORNER

Shortly afterthe New Year,i-ATN(InternationalAutomotiveTechniciansNetwork), hada poll thatasked:

Lookingback at theyear 2009, andcomparing it

to 2008, which of the following applies toyour company?

The results, with over 2,300 votes, were:

28% ........ Business was off significantly23% ........ Business was off slightly14.9% ..... Business was about the same23.8% ..... Business increased slightly10.3% ..... Business increased significantly

Considering electrical rebuilding being apart of the automotive service field, this isa yardstick to determine how each of ourindividual business measures up to theoverall picture, and perhaps gives us anidea as where we are business-wise andthe direction we need to take.

Even if rebuilding and sales of units isyour main line of work, each one of us hashis/her own plan for getting into nichesthat generate extra income. For me, my on-vehicle service work has been a plus, andwe are accepting more and more work fordiagnostic, unusual electrical gremlins, and no-crank problems.

I will explain a couple of such cases thatwe had lately, but first lets look into anunusual problem we encountered with aLexus starter.

Lexus Starter InstallationLexus cars with 4.0L engines have beenaround for many years. Some of the earliercars have already had their startersreplaced, or are getting ready to have thestarter replaced. What makes it difficult isthe location of the starter, being in the Vof the engine, which requires removing alot of stuff, including the intake manifoldand a whole lot of connectors, lines andhoses for access.

Due to hours of work that it takes forreplacement, we pay special attentionwhen rebuilding this or similar starters toinsure proper operation and preventwarranty claims.

With all of that in mind, I was verysurprised when a local customer of ourscalled and said the starter we supplied justspun, and didn't crank the engine! A 17581starter for a 1997 Lexus LS-400 is the lastunit I care to hear anything, particularlyabout its slipping drive problem!

I decided to go and see it for myself. Ifound their claim to be correct, and indeedthe starter was spinning as if the drive wascompletely loose and had no resistance atall.

Short of taking the starter off again, therewasn't much I could do. I mentioned that Iwasn't going to send another starter until Ifound out for sure what had happened. The starter was sent back to us, and as Isuspected, I couldn't find a thing wrongwith it! The drive was very tighttherewas no way this drive could have spunfreely if engaged. There was also no signof engagement on the drive gear that wehad painted blacknot even a scratch!

Looking at the starters DE housing, Inoticed marks on the flat surface areashown by the arrow on Figure 1, wherethe starter goes into the housing. Thesemarks were not even and the best wecould figure was in installation, the starter

from a different vendor and had it installedproperly, there would have been no waythey would accepted my explanation thatour starter was not faulty. Add to it thevery expensive labor time and the wholething would not have been a pleasanttransaction!

So be careful about this one and make sureyou inform the technician to make sure thestarter is installed flush with the engine, before proceeding with tightening themounting bolts and the rest of the work.

Ford ExplorerA 2002 Ford Explorer was scheduled toarrive Thursday morning, day before NewYear's, for a clicking starter problem andbecause the check engine light wasstaying on. It belonged to the visiting sonof a very long time customer, and that wasthe reason I had accepted the job for thatday. The plan was to at least take care ofthe starting problem first and scan thePCM, and ask him to bring it back forfurther repair on Monday after theholidays. We were working only half a dayand letting the staff leave at noon for NewYears Eve.

The vehicle had been purchased from aused-car lot only a week ago, and there

was excessivecorrosion build upon the starter. Wedecided to replaceit, which requiredmore effort thanusual since it wasa 4WD vehiclewith severerusting. Teardownof the core later onshowed the starterwas the cause ofclicking problem.

    After starterreplacement we

noticed it was taking excessive crankingtime for the engine to start up. Pulling thecodes, we found a P0113 from the PCMwhich meant a problem existed in theIntake Air Temperature Sensor (IAT)circuit. Looking at the data stream on ascan tool, it showed it was sensing aminus 40°F, which is a good indication ofan open sensor or circuit. So we tried tolocate it, which usually is a 2-wire sensorattached to the air filter housing or the airducts before the intake.

A detailed search showed no such sensorexisted on this 4.0L E-code engine! Somuch for off the top of my head hunch!Referring to AutoElectricPro.com wiringschematic, I learned (for the first time) thatIAT is incorporated into Mass AirflowSensor (MAF) and thats why they arecalled Integrated Mass Airflow Sensor inmost schematics. (Figure 2)

Figure 1 - 17581 Starter DE Housing and Mounting Surface

had been mounted at an angle, with thedrive gear not even touching the flywheel.

Looking at the DE housing again (Figure1), you notice the mounting holes are notsymmetrically located, meaning if there isthe slightest amount of binding, tighteningup the bolts will not pull it through evenlyand would not make it get flush againstthe engine block.

We polished the scratched area, and toldthe shop to make sure that the hole thestarter goes into is free from any slightobstruction. They reinstalled the starterand the very same unit cranked every timeand started the vehicle. So our suspicionof mis-alignment was correct, the techni-cian had not noticed it, perhaps becauseof his rush to finish the job.

Just imagine if I had supplied anotherstarter, or worse, they had purchased one

The PCMs 5Vref was present at the sensor, but the returnsignal would not change at all at the PCM; thus the scantool showing of -40°F at all times, the temperature that thePCM believed to exist. It was a very cold day, but insidethe shop was certainly warmer than that!

task. Early to late 90s Hondas (mostly Civics andAccords) sometimes develop problems with distributors, which is a complicated unit and houses the ignition coil, ignition module and a cylinder position sensor. Obviouslyit is a costly unit and not something to replace based on aguess!

What redirected my attention was the clue of a faintsmell of something burning, which I guessed be theelectrical part of the ignition switch. So a call to our localHonda dealer was made, and when the parts manager (agood friend of mine) said they had it in stock and wechange a lot of them, I felt I was on the right track.

When the ignition switch was removed, we could see themelted solder on its wires and a molten piece of solderwhich proved the switch was overheating and was indeedthe cause of the burning smell. This is something that willmake the engine die when a certain connection overheatsand does not conduct enough current! This same problemwill also contribute to an occasional no-start and possiblyan occasional no charge. (Figure 4)Could the excessive cranking time be due to the low

temperature reading by PCM? We know the starting fuelcontrol is directly related to what the PCM sees asoutside temperature. So could it be additional fuel beinginjected into the engine that was the reason for theextended cranking time? It sure sounded like a probability, but regardless the sensor had to be replaced.

All of this was explained to the customer. With theirauthorization, the MAF (Figure 3, a $250 item, Part #1L2Z-12B579-BARM) was ordered from the dealer and thetruck was to bereturned thefollowing week tofinish the job.Interestingly, when the newpart arrived, nowhere on the boxwas the wordRebuilt orRemanufacturedpresent, but theFord dealerrequired $70 corecharge, which tome meant Fordwants the old one back real bad!

The truck returned the next week. The sensor wasreplaced, the check engine light stayed off, and crankingtime became quite normal, not to mention that all of thistranslated into a fairly good sized ticket and a good sale.

So the point here is there are other factors that cancontribute to the operation and longevity of the starter, and they need to be determined and fixed. They can alsobe profitable.

Ignition SwitchThe owner of a 1998 Honda Accord made an appointmentfor a list of items such as:

    a) Blowing a courtesy light fuse, not allowing the gearshift lever to come off the park position;

    b) Inoperative horn because of blown fuse; andc) Engine dying at times while driving, and a faint smell

of something burning inside the car!

Checking out the system, we narrowed down the blowncourtesy light fuse to a problem in the right front passen-ger door. The problem with the horn was easier to isolateas the horns were shorted, and that was why the fuse wasblowing.

Isolating the dying engine problem was the most difficult

    Figure 3 - IMAF Sensor

An estimate was prepared and authorization was received. The work progressed well and the new switch wasinstalled (Figure 5). It turned into a fairly good sizedticket, where the profit was equal to the sale of a fewunits, depending on their type and cost.

This and cases like it point to how our service cangenerate income when the number of units sold is slightlylower, and how on-vehicle service can be a valuableaddition for auto electric shops who only rebuild startersand alternators, given you have or have trained the rightpersonnel, and have enough tech resources on hand.

Well, thats enough for this issue. Until I see you again, keep up the good work. !

Newly Assigned Numbers from Lester Catalog Company, Inc.The following list represents Lester numbers for ALTERNATORS, STARTERS & GENERATORS, and that were added to the system fin December 2009. In some cases, theLester number is not itself a new number, but rather represents a new unit that now shares an existing number. Units that share a Lester number (which we consider to be a salesnumber) will always have a different PIC number (which we consider to be a technical number). Alternators beginning with 20XXX through 23XXX and starters beginning with30XXX through 33XXX have primarily non U.S. applications. Our intent is to publish a monthly list in the APRA GLOBAL CONNECTION, of numbers added in the previousmonth. For additional information on these units, refer to the Lester Kwikfinder® or contact Lester Catalog at 530-823-0963, [email protected]

Add On Salesby Ed Rigsbee, CSP

There is a reason why McDonalds enjoyed total rev-enues of $23.5 billion in 2008. Could it be that there aremore than 31,000 McDonalds restaurants around theworld in 118 countries? That is partly the reason, howeverI believe the fact that they sell 9 million pounds of theirdelicious French fries per day is an even more importantelement.

What they really do well is ask, Would you like fries withthat? McDonalds world wide excels at add on sales. Irealize that others have also gotten on the add on salesband wagon, yet McDonalds consistently performs yearafter year.

What Would it Take? What would it take for you to create this kind of culture inyour organization? You might be finding yourself a bitresistant, thinking that the MacDonalds employees aremindless robots; and you might be right. However, theyconsistently perform. What would it take for yourorganization to perform at the level McDonalds expects?Could the roadblocks be ego, intellect, and perception?

The Ego RoadblockIn my experience professional service corporations andchic retailers are the worst offenders in the area of lettingego get in the way of add on sales. Ill ask you this. Doyou want to hold on to your costly erroneous beliefs ordo you want to increase revenues? When you let yourego get in your way, revenues will decrease.

The Intellect RoadblockIll do it my way because I know better. This is thebattle cry for intellects. In solving complex problems thisis fine, however it is not acceptable is selling more of yourproducts and/or services. Intellects are infatuated withfeatures as opposed to being conscious of benefits.Intellects love to hear themselves talk about the technicalside of anything and everything. Guess what? Yourcustomers really do not care. They just want to know howyour product or service will make their lives betterand, that it is a good value.

The Perception RoadblockThe perception roadblock to add on sales is one that willdefinitely need a brain adjustment. Business owners andthe employees that sell for them too often feel it is animposition on their customer to offer something addi-tional. Somehow these folks got their head screwed oncockeyed and they really do need some help. When onetruly cares about their customer, client, or patient; it isincumbent on them to offer every bit of value your/theirorganization has to offer.

One might say that McDonalds is making people fat andunhealthy by offering supersizing or just fries with that.I do not think so. McDonalds is not cramming the fooddown the throats of their dining patrons but simplyoffering more value. Customers make choices. What youneed to do is to simply offer your customers more choicesand more value.

Success in SimplicityMcDonalds, I believe, is successful because of simplicity. They do not rattle off 20 additional dining options butrather one or two. If you were to adapt this idea ofsimplicity to your organization, it might be done by justoffering one single item to every customer as an add on,or possible having just one specific and different custom-ized add on offering for every individual product orservice. Needless to say, the multi-item approach is muchmore difficult to implement.

Why Else Dont They Offer?I have found that the primary reason you and youremployees do not offer add on sales is because of a lackof training. I bet you thought I was going to say laziness. In my two decades of experience in work with organiza-tions as a consultant, I have identified lack of training asthe culprit much more often than apathy or sloth.

A Simple SolutionYour simple solution to increasing add on sales in yourorganization is daily training. Try this for a month and seeif Im not completely correct. At the start of every day, spend two to three minutes explaining to all the personsin your organization, why a particular product or servicehelps your customers lives to be better and suggest thatthey suggest it to customers that day. At the end of amonth you have trained your entire company, on how tooffer 20 new and or different, add on products or services. And your employees have consciously participated inthat training.

Yes, it will take you, the leader, a bit of pre-planning timebut, my goshisnt that your job anyway? Do thisrigorously for one month and I guarantee you that youll

be pleased with the results. It is the little things that makethe difference.

Who Knew?by E. Mark KotheChief Technical Officer, APRA

Mywifes 2006 FordExplorer 4.6LV8 hadthe check engine light come on.A quickcheck with the OBD scanner revealed acylinder 4 misfire code. Since this car hascoils over each plug I thought it might bethe coil, so I swapped coils 3 and 4 andreset the code. A few days later the checkengine light was back on. Still cylinder #4misfire. My next thought was the sparkplugs. I stopped at the local auto partsstore to pick them up. The kid workingthere explained that he would have tospecial order them, they were 13 dollarseach, and I should probably havesomeone install them for me. I politelyexplained that I have been changing plugsfor 40 years and thought I could handle it.He laughed and said I might want to lookinto it further.

OK, fine, Ill checkAutoBulletins.Com.Aquick look into the ignition sectionrevealed an 11-page document, completewith a flow chart, on the procedure tochange the plugs! Really, a flow chart tochange spark plugs? After reading thedocument that discusses the threedifferent special Rotunda tools that I willneed, the three methods that the plugWILL fail, causing you to have to ex-tract the broken pieces from the cylinderhead, and the unlimited labor time thatFord allows, I realized that kid was right.

Key U.S. Senator RaisesConcern About Cash forClunkers ProgramThe Automotive Service Association(ASA) has reported that Sen. CharlesGrassley (R-Iowa), rankingmember of theU.S. Senate Committee on Finance, haswritten a letter of inquiry to Ray LaHood, secretary of the U.S. Department ofTransportation (DOT), to find out wherethe start-up money for the Cash forClunkers program, enacted in the summerof 2009, was spent. Grassley stated hefeels it is his constitutional duty toconduct oversight into the actions of theexecutive branch, including the activitiesof the Department of Transportation.Grassley asked for an accounting of whatcompanies and executive branch agenciesreceived contracts from the DOT toprocess and sign the thousands of rebatechecks.

The Consumer Assistance to Recycle andSaveAct of 2009 (CARS), coined Cashfor Clunkers, was intended to boost carsales in the United States. The CARSprogram originally provided $1 billion toassist auto dealers, but an additional $2billion was appropriated by Congress tocontinue the program. Cash for Clunkerswas intended to remove older, less-fuel-efficient vehicles fromAmericas highwaysand replace themwith new,more-fuel-efficient vehicles.

Grassley expressed concern with thefunding provision for the contractors inthe extended program. He writes, Pursu-ant to the legislation, the DOT had only 30days after the date the legislation wasenacted into law to engage contractorsand stand up the program before the firstrebates were issued. It is my understand-ing that the original legislation provided$50 million to cover the costs of thesecontracts, but no specific fundingprovision for the contractors was includedwith the additional $2 billion that wasprovided for the program. To date, theadministration has not provided anaccurate accounting of the administrativecosts related to the Cash for Clunkersprogram and I believe that theAmericantaxpayer deserves more information, notless, and that information needs to comesooner rather than later.

Grassley continued, In addition toauditing the individual transactions of theCash for Clunkers program, I am interestedin the corporations and executive branchagencies that received contracts from theDOT to process thousands of transac-tions generated by CARS. It seems to methat the administration chose an inher-ently risky approach to developing andimplementing the Cash for Clunkersprogram and spent millions to get it upand running in record time with littleregard for proper insight and accountabil-ity; thus creating an environment ripe forwaste, fraud and abuse.

Stephen loved life, and he didnt waste aminute of his waking hour, living eachmoment to its fullest. He worked hard hiswhole life and was an extremely successfulentrepreneur, building a company,American Pacific Core, Inc., from theground up with his brother Alan, though, success never swelled his head and henever forgot where he came from.

Stephens greatest reward was to be ableto build a beautiful home to share and tobe able to provide for family and friends. His idea of the perfect day was to bringloved ones together at his home for a BBQwhere he could grill, show off his Harley, enjoy the view, and watch movies.

    BUSINESS FOR SALE

Near-Term Future ofE-mail MarketingAs we move into economic recovery, marketers are optimisticoptimisticenough to maintain or increase their onlinemarketing spending. Based on a recentsurvey of 1,057 business executives, online marketing spending will be up in thecoming year.

According to the StrongMail 2010Marketing Trends report, 89 percent ofrespondents answered they will eithermaintain or increase the amount of theirmarketing spending in 2010. Fifty percentof the executives said they will allocateadditional dollars to their marketingefforts.

The top two areas that will benefit fromthis increased spending are social mediaand e-mail marketing, with 69 percentresponding they will increase e-mailspending; 59 percent saying they willincrease social media efforts, and 69percent reporting they will integrate bothareas.

Moreover, 68 percent of marketers will alsowork to make better use of the data that isalready available to them.

StrongMail's director of corporatemarketing Kristin Hersant points outmarketers are becoming more sophisti-cated and leveraging the viral aspect ofthe Web. For example, using targetedsegmentation to create a referral programwith their top influencers, ...[those] mostactive with their brand, says Hersant.

Better tools are becoming available to helpmarketers identify their most activecustomers by examining engagementmetrics. (Engagement metrics measure thedegree of customer involvement.) Thesecompanies can also scan lists to determinewhich people are involved in socialnetworks, including the networks in whichthey participate.

Not surprisingly, 46 percent of marketersreported a desire to increase efficiency byadopting segmentation and targeting.Marketers will also increase relevancy isby using video in e-mail, added Hersant.Marketers will use video more often topromote opportunities like webinars, training, and product education. There'salso a developing technology that turnsvideo into animated GIFs that look like aplaying video. A new technology (Rel-evance Engines) that makes it easier totest alternative versions of artwork andcopy will become more important in 2010.Our forecast, wise marketers will begin bylooking at their current missed opportuni-ties to better target current customersegments. More sophisticated marketerswill embrace the new technologies to maketheir marketing investments go farther. !
