Ambassador of the MonthGary ScarsbrookWelcomemat Services of Pasco

P.O. Box 1203Odessa, FL 33556

727-835-6785

I consider being selected as the West Pasco Chamber of Commerce Ambassador of the Month an honor. There are many ambas-sadors that work hard to support our local chamber. Why would I commit time to the chamber? Because it helps me build my business and I want all small businesses to know this. How does the chamber do this you might ask? By providing education, networking and business relationship opportunities. So how much do I believe in the Chamber? Well I put my money where my mouth is. I just left my last position of 18 years to start my own business. I am now the proud franchise owner of Wel-comemat Services located here in Pasco County. One of the first things I did was join the chamber to help me get the word out. At Welcomemat Services we help small business owners grow loyal customers by targeting new movers in their neighborhood. New movers are 5 times more likely to change brand loyalty’s and every month I can introduce their business to 250 new movers. Not only that but I can tract the results so the business owner knows how well it is working. I am excited about my new career, the challenge of building a new business and the chance to help others build theirs as part of the Pasco community.

Meet The Candidates For Honorary Governor of West Pasco

Mark Wickham – Youth & Family AlternativesRunning on behalf of RAP House“The Key to the Future is with Every Child, Vote for Mark!”

Youth & Family Alternative’s (YFA’s) President and CEO, Mark Wickham, is running for Honorary Governor of West Pasco to raise money to purchase beds for the Runaway Alternatives Project (RAP) House located in New Port Richey. RAP House is a Youth Crisis Shelter that serves children age 10-17 who are runaways, homeless and in need of an emergency place to stay.

Mark’s campaign slogan is “the key to the future is with every child.” With the money raised, he intends to purchase new beds and bedroom furniture for RAP House. Many times the children staying at RAP House have never had a bedroom or their bedroom was not a safe place. By purchasing new beds and furniture, the children will be able to have a safe and comfortable environment of their own. Something that most of us take for granted, can make a huge impact on these lives.

Mark needs your votes to win and get those beds purchased! Many fun activities are being sched-uled to also help raise money for his campaign. To vote and keep up-to-date on all the information and events, visit www.yfainc.org and Mark’s Facebook Page, www.facebook.com/Mark-Wickham-for-Gov-572905882865649/.

Shawn Foster – Sunrise Consulting GroupRunning on behalf of Pasco Kids First“Vote for Shawn – Committed to the community, dedicated to progress.”

Shawn Foster is a political consultant and lobbyist and is the owner of the Sunrise Consulting Group. Shawn brings an extensive background to his clients that started almost 20 years ago in government. He represents corporate, non-profit, small business, and local governments throughout the Tampa Bay area.

Shawn is very active in the community and enjoys volunteering. He is the past Chairman of the United Way of Pasco County and currently is a board member for the United Way of Florida. He is also past President of the Community Service Council of West Pasco and is a volunteer with many other organizations in Pasco County. Shawn was very humbled to be recently presented the Volunteer of Year award from the Community Service Council of West Pasco.

Shawn is married to Teresa and they have three children ages 14, 20, and 23.

Ken Watkins – GSF MortgageRunning on behalf of SPCA Suncoast“Until There Are None, Rescue One”

A soft spoken man and George Clooney look alike, Ken Watkins has been a resident of Pasco County for the past 22 years. He asserts his position as Community Chair with GSF Mortgage by participating in The West Pasco Board of Realtors (Shining Star 2015), The West Pasco Chamber of Commerce, and is a Rotarian. Charities served include child welfare, health issues, and animal rescue. When Ken isn’t busy helping others, he focuses on his home life with his wife and four legged kids. His personal enjoyments include Bowling, Nascar racing and restoring Corvettes.

It sounds strange and even complicated, but there are a small number of people in our community who would rather steal

electricity than pay for it like the rest of us. Would you know how to detect if someone was doing that in your neighborhood? So how does someone ‘steal’ electricity? Thieves divert energy from power lines or even from neighboring homes to run the power into their own home. That process, if successful, gives them power for free. Not only is this illegal, but it can also be deadly.

According to the safeelectricity.org, this method of power theft will sometimes feed energy back into a power line, which can harm or even kill a linesman. Before a linesman begins work on power lines, he will de-energize the lines. But if that line is tapped into a home illegally diverting the power, the remaining energy could kill the linesman. Additionally, if your residence is connected to the same power line as one responsible for stealing power, your home could be overloaded with energy. That can harm the appliances and electronics connected to your home’s outlets. The theft of energy can also harm your pocketbooks, as companies may have to raise rates.

Often, this theft is the hallmark of illegal drug use and sales. There have been arrests in our county as well as surrounding counties that have led to drug charges. Thieves who have been stealing energy have also set up elaborate marijuana grow opera-tions inside those homes. This illegal tactic gives criminals the ability to harvest several dozen marijuana plants, which can net thousands of dollars in drug sales.

Detecting energy theft is not easy, but a few keys, provided by Duke Energy, may help detect a thief. Those tips include if a person is not a member of your local power company and you see them working on overhead wires, power meters or digging near underground lines, this could be suspicious. If you overhear someone talking about bypassing meters or having impossibly low bills, this may also be a sign of energy theft.

In the September issue of Electric Co-Op Today, Withlacoochee River Electric Cooperative reported more than 180 marijuana grow houses were discovered illegally diverting energy in its service area since 2006. The company estimated it lost more than $3 million due to those stealing energy. As a result of this activity, WREC has started a program that rewards citizens $500 for the arrest and conviction of a person guilty of power theft. Those figures become staggering when compiled nationwide. According to GrideSense, a power monitoring company, approximately $6 billion in energy is stolen annually in the United States.

Those who are convicted of power theft can be prosecuted under Florida Statute 812.14, which can garner up to a year in prison and as much as $1,000 in fines. If you suspect someone in your neighborhood has been stealing energy, please contact your power company or the Pasco Sheriff’s Office at 727-847-8102.

Voting by Mail Still a Popular OptionEarly in February my office mailed over 34,000 vote-by-mail

ballots for the March 15, 2016 Presidential Preference Primary (PPP). These ballots went to voters with requests already on file and marks only the beginning of what will be sent out daily until the March 9th deadline. Once known as “absentee voting”, because it required an excuse to be absent from your precinct on Election Day, it’s now referred to as voting by mail, and continues to be a popular option known for convenience in the privacy of your home. But what about that privacy thing when the solicitation calls start coming in?

The growing popularity of voting by mail has also captured the attention of candidates and campaigns that use vote-by-mail statistics to study trends and target voters. Campaigns are legally entitled to voter registration information that is public record, and that includes whether or not a vote-by-mail ballot request is on file for you. While it’s true that vote-by-mail requests will generate unwanted campaign calls, there is a hidden benefit! By returning a vote-by-mail ballot well in advance of Election Day, the solicita-tion phone calls should stop. Once you’ve made your decision and voted, the campaigns will stop their efforts to influence your vote.

In this day of growing concern over protecting private infor-mation, we have redesigned the vote-by-mail return envelope to include a flap that covers the voter’s signature. This change, in response to voter concerns regarding exposed signatures being sent through the mail, may be a small thing, but, nevertheless important in securing voter confidence and the integrity of the election. While we’re on the subject of integrity, I would like to reiterate an important point, and that is that contrary to urban legend, I assure you that all vote-by-mail ballots are counted!

Vote-by-mail ballots must be returned to the elections’ office by 7:00 p.m. Election Day, March 15, 2016. If returning the bal-lot by mail, please allow sufficient time for first-class delivery by the US Postal Service, or hand deliver ballots to any of the three Supervisor of Elections’ Offices in Pasco County. Voted ballots are also accepted at early voting sites, but may not be turned in at the polls on Election Day. Information on ordering a vote-by-mail ballot, office locations and early voting sites is available at pascovotes.com.

November 2015

Dear Chamber Partner,

As a valued member of the business community, we appreciate your decision to join us in our mission to promote a favorable business climate and to provide business leadership for the improvement of the West Pasco economy and quality of life.

In the next few weeks we will be producing our New West Pasco Magazine. This will be replacing our traditional Chamber guide and directory with a more contemporary style publication. The focus will be on the unique stories of the area as told by its people.

I invite you to use this magazine as part of your marketing strategy. Your advertisement in this publication not only creates a welcoming first impression but also reinforces your role in the business community.

It’s the ideal location to promote your company. As readers immerse themselves in reading the stories about their neighbors and community, they are also getting familiar with your business.

The magazine will be available in multiple platforms including print, mobile and digitally on the Chamber’s website, adding even greater market reach.

For advertising details on the new edition, please contact Atlanta McDonald, Account Executive for Heron Publishing. You can reach Atlanta via her cell at 225-301-2669 or e-mail at Atlanta@Heron la.com.

We are very excited and look forward to sharing our New West Pasco Magazine with a broad audience of members, prospective members, newcomers, and visitors to our West Pasco community.

Hope to see you in the West Pasco Magazine.

Sincerely,

Henry G. “Chip” Wichmanowski President
