INDIANAPOLIS – Norm Duke of
Clermont, Fla., won a hall of fame strikefest
with Parker Bohn III of Jackson, N.J., last
week to win the Dick Weber PBA Playoffs
presented by Hammer at Woodland Bowl
and secure his 37th career title, third best in
PBA Tour history.
Duke’s third victory season also put him
into the thick of the PBA Player of the Year
race with only the PBA Tournament of
Champions remaining on the schedule.
Duke put on a stunning performance,
including his 836-766 victory over Bohn, a
32-time PBA Tour title and a fellow PBA
Hall of Famer.
“If you would have told me this morning
I would shoot 800 in the title match, I’d
have said I was going to win the title,”
Duke said, “but I wouldn’t have believed
it.”
Just like he had done in three previous
elimination rounds, Duke started his match
against Bohn with nine strikes for a 289
game and a 60-pin lead with two games to
go. It was too much for Bohn to overcome,
even though he answered with games of 279 and 258
for his 766 series. Duke followed his 289 with games
of 268 and 279.
“That was a match people are going to remember
for a while,” Bohn said.
Duke’s march to the title match began in the
Regional Championships round when he struck on 17
of his first 19 shots, racing away from Michael
Haugen Jr. of Carefree, Ariz., to win the Southwest
Region championship, 792-616.
In the Conference Championship round he defeated
Bryon Smith of Roseburg, Ore., 751-657, and he
advanced to the championship match with a 789
series in the semifinal round. Bohn won the second
spot in the title match with a 632 series, edging
Sweden’s Martin Larsen by 14 pins.
The PBA playoffs involved six groups of PBA
Tour, Senior Tour and regional players bowling a
series of elimination rounds. Champions from six
Regional groups advanced through Regional and
Conference Championship rounds leading up to the
semifinals and championship rounds.

Third victory of 2010-11 season moves Duke past Pete Weber into
third place on PBA’s all-time list.

Pin points to ponder.
•••Yes, averages can vary as
much as 40 points from bowling
center to bowling center.
•••Never thought I'd see the
day when bowling balls came in
as many colors as Easter eggs.
•••Only a few bowlers can
stand prosperity on the lanes,
particularly when an opponent
is having it all.
•••In most sports the spectator
is fulfilled by identifying with
the player in action rather than
through the action. In bowling
most fans are also doers in com-
petition as well as watchers, so
they gain from both areas of the
sport.
•••Some people bowl because
they want to be with their mates,
family or friends. And some peo-
ple bowl because they want to
get away from their mates, fam-
ily or friends.
•••Why can't high average and
all other bowlers understand
that the USBC is not merely an
award giving organization but is
deeply involved in all forms of
services for a modest member-
ship fee structure---one of the
lowest in sports.
•••A channel ball is one that in
error goes into the depression on
either side of the lane. Formerly
it was known as a gutter ball,
and before that it was a poodle.
A bowler can usually tell how
good his or her reputation is•by
•••We have some great trick
shot bowlers but the master was
the late, great Andy Varipapa
who was still in demand when he
was 90. He went through all the
various bowling balls from wood
on up and he dazzled in person,
on TV, in the movies. He had
control, confidence, and his
main aim was to communicate
with his audiences, letting them
know that he wanted to please
them.
•••It is no knock not to win, but
it is a tragedy if you don't give
your best effort.
•••Many adults list bowling as
their sport---but they only bowl
once a month.
•••Many adults list bowling as
their sport---but they only bowl
once a month.
•••Top pro golfers, and even
some that aren't top rated, can
win a million dollars and more
in a single tournament. Top pro
bowlers still get special praise
when they reach the million
mark in their careers. That's
hardly fair. But remember we
didn't even have true profes-
sional bowlers in any numbers
in their own niche until 1958.
Pro bowlers travel the world
seeking the many tournaments
that are making roll for pay
more and more universal.
•••If more bowlers would read
all the rules before they enter
tournaments, and more tourna-
ment directors, individuals or
groups, would check bowlers
before they bowl, there would be
a lot less post tourney problems.
•••If tourney entry fees, travel,
by any means, car, train, plane
hotels and food costs continue to
escalate, nearby tournaments
will have their own special
appeal, in the head and in the
purse. Start out by rolling in
your county and state events.
•••The happy ending to too
many nights of bowling is the
simple fact that the night has
ended.

HACKENSACK, NJ - Holiday
continued to steamroll past oppo-
nents sweeping their third straight
contest in the Youth Travel League;
winners of sixteen games in their
last eighteen, they haven’t dropped a
match since mid-December as
whatever combo they’ve used from
their talented roster have risen to the
occasion. This time, Ramapo senior
Mike Carr, who qualified for the
State Tournament by finishing sec-
ond in the North 1-A Sectionals with
a 737 series, appeared undaunted by
the seemingly more difficult lane
conditions posed this session. His
triple-deuce 636 was one of only
two “600s” registered on the day,
with 12-year-old Stephen Plaszky’s
triple-deuce 617 being the other.
Mike’s teammates’Joe Malyack,
who excelled at the North 1-B
Sectionals with a top qualifier 663,
rolled 199, Nick Cilento 182 and
Dillon Cilento 175, in getting the
job done for Holiday in their 2524-
2452 triumph over Bowler City I;
best for BCI were John Draney 211
and Ryan Perez 206,195.
For Fair Lawn’s young Stephen
Plaszky, it was his first appearance
since January and he made sure it
was notable, stringing games of
201,214,202 in leading his quartet to
two of three from Montvale which
had won five of its previous six
games. The Floyd brothers’ Jaylin
233 and Justin 222 along with
Madison Perry’s over-average
triple, cemented Fair Lawn’s victo-
ry. Montvale received creditable
performances from 11-year-old
Matthew Russell and Park Ridge
sophomore Kyle Ladewig, both of
whom had identical games of 182
and 175.
