CONGRATULATIONS

BISHOP PAUL BRADLEY! Bishop Paul Bradley of the Diocese of Kalamazoo, Michigan, is a native of Pittsburgh and began his priesthood in this diocese fifty years ago when he was ordained on May 1, 1971. He

served twice at Saint Sebastian Parish, first as parochial vicar, and then later as pastor from 1994-2001. Many parish members remember him with enormous respect and affection. He was also one of the founders of the CYO Musical, which is a longstanding parish tradition.

Bishop Bradley will offer a Mass of Thanksgiving at

Saint Paul Cathedral in Oakland on Sunday, May 2, at

2:00 pm. The Cathedral will be open but there will be some COVID limitations, so the Mass will also be live

streamed on the Saint Paul Cathedral website: www.ghocatholics.org/tv-ministry.

For those who would like to send Bishop Bradley a note or a card, his address is:

Most Reverend Paul J. Bradley 2131 Aberdeen Drive

Kalamazoo, MI 49008

In Other News: Thanks to everyone who came to our parish Fish Fry on the Fridays

of Lent, and a special note of gratitude to the many chefs, preparers, runners, and traffic direc-

tors who kept everything running smoothly, averaging around 1100 meals per week. The

Fish Fry was an enormous success both financially and socially, and we all had a fun time.

The gross total was just over $80,000! Well done, one and all!....Stay tuned for more

news….

READINGS / Second Sunday of Easter

First Reading: Acts of the Apostles 4:32-35 The first Christian community shared their possessions, and no one was needy.

Second Reading: 1 John 5:1-6 Those who love God keep his commandments.

Gospel Reading: John 20:19-31 Thomas believes because he sees Jesus.

COVID-19 Update:

No Need to Continue Registering for Masses

Here at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, we have a COVID Response Team that meets on a regular basis to review and discuss issues and requests related to the COVID-19 pandemic. We also continue to clean and sanitize our churches after every Mass, and meeting rooms following every gathering. Below are a few recent developments of which we’d like you to be aware.

The good news is that you are no longer mandated to register prior to attending Mass. Because the Diocese has relaxed its guidelines related to church capacity, we’re now able to open our churches to 75% seating.

To ensure the safety of all Mass attendees, masks must continue to be worn (and in place before you enter church) and we need to continue social distancing in our churches. Because of this, it is suggested that you arrive early for Mass along with your family or party so that all can be seated together.

The COVID Response Team has determined that it is safe for parish organizations and ministries that have religious or spiritual objectives to meet in person. These would include prayer groups, the Ladies of Charity and other gatherings that have religious or spiritual components. The caveat is that all attendees must wear masks and socially distance.

Registering for Masses No Longer Necessary.

Masks and Social Distancing Still Mandatory, Though.

Parish Religious Organizations May Again Meet in Person.

Preparation of the Altar: Three Days

1. Three days our world was broken; the Lord of life lay dead. “Take up your cross,” he told us who followed where he led. Would we now hang in torment with thieves on ev’ry side, Our Passover shattered, our hope crucified? Three days we hid in silence, in bitter fear and grief. Three days we clung together where he had washed our feet.

2. Three days—and on the third day, the women came at dawn. His tomb, they said, was empty, his broken body gone. Who could believe their story? The dead do not arise, Yet he walks among us, and with our own eyes We’ve seen him at this table; we’ve shared his bread and wine. Hearts burning bright within us, we’ve seen his glory shine.

3. Three days our world was broken and in an instant healed, God’s covenant of mercy in mystery revealed. Two thousand years are one day in God’s eternal sight,

Parish Social Ministry

Sharing the Peace of Christ As we move into Spring we see a shift in response to the Covid pandemic. Some restrictions have been relaxed, while others remain in place. Through it all, we as a parish have tried to remain in some kind of contact with our homebound parishioners. We see the importance of sharing that inner peace, which only

Christ can give, in the midst of these months of fear and hopelessness. For some, like the Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, it has been a periodic phone call or card sent to the person they previously visited. For others like the Holy Cross Academy students, it was making greeting cards during the “in between time” after Valentine’s Day and offering them to one of the local personal care homes. Then the Ladies of Charity sent out a one-page colorful Lenten calendar to help them enter into the season. They followed that with Easter cards to shut ins living at home. Yet another group of volunteers wrote personal greeting Easter cards to be given to the activity directors at the five personal care/nursing home facilities in our parish geographical area. Also, the Junior Ladies of Charity sent Easter cards to residents of Mount Assisi Place personal care home and the Haven at North Hills assisted living and memory care residence. An initiative inspired by the parish Evangelization Committee involved sending a mailing to our homebound parishioners consisting of information about the parish Lenten activities, including those online; an abridged version of articles from recent bulletins, and a response requested postcard asking them to let the social ministry office know if they would like to receive a weekly or monthly phone call from a parish volunteer; an occasional mailing of topics of interest; and of course, prayer. We have already received a number of responses. The activity around the Covid pandemic continues to evolve. One of our ardent hopes is to have our Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion resume their visits to the homebound. This will involve some additional planning and training of the ministers and awareness updates for the homebound themselves. In this Easter season of growth and new life God will show us the path to bring peace. From Sister Pat Mahoney, OSF

Second Sunday of Easter (Divine Mercy)

The Gospel today features the story of “doubting Thomas,” the apostle who refused to believe in the risen Christ until he saw him with his own eyes. But let us not overlook Jesus giving the Holy Spirit to the apostles, telling them “whose sins you forgive are forgiven them.” May we be a forgiving people and extend God’s divine mercy to others.

Springs of Water?

Today is the eighth day of Easter, the day that completes the Easter octave. Remembering that at the moment of our Baptism we became Christ for others, we renew our Baptism into his death and resurrection at Eastertime. Last Sunday, we renewed our Baptismal Promises but didn't have a Sprinkling Rite due to the pandemic. The holy water fonts remain empty, too. We do this to prevent any skin contact with standing water that others may touch.

You may have seen information recently about bringing water from home in a small bottle or container. I encourage you to do this when you come to church during the Easter season, so that you (and all those within your household) may receive the benefit of newly blessed water throughout these fifty days. Our clergy will be happy to bless it for you if you ask! “Springs of water, bless the Lord; praise and exalt him above all for ever.” —Blessing of Baptismal Water

Faith Formation

Believe! Breaking Open the Word: John 20:19-31

“Peace be with you.” The gospel is John's description of the first appearance of Jesus since the resurrection. In the first appearance, Jesus gives the disciples peace and joy and breathes new life into them, bestowing on them the gift of the Holy Spirit. In the second appearance, Jesus appears to Thomas and by showing his wounds, he gives Thomas the evidence he needs to believe.

Listen to the Word: This is a very familiar reading. What words or phrases caught your imagination for the first time? What thought lingers in your thought and heart? Look into Your Life: Children: How can you believe in Jesus whom you have never seen? Youth: Jesus' words of greeting were "Peace be with you," followed by the invitation to forgive sins. How does forgiveness bring peace to you? How does it change the world? Adults: Why do you choose to believe in Jesus? What strengthens your faith?

Incarnate the Word: Choose one of the following activities as a way to further enflesh these Sunday readings. In today's Gospel, Jesus breathes new life into the disciples. Find the Risen Christ in the world around you. Go for a short walk every day this week. Have family members take note of everything that breathes. Jesus asks us to forgive others. How do you practice forgiveness in your family? Is there anyone you need to forgive? Read a story about someone who was a witness to Jesus.

Can you trust the Gospels? Do you really know who wrote them? Do the Gospels communicate truth- or fabricated fables? Who is Jesus? Who did Jesus claim to be? Join Dr. Brant Pitre, as he draws evidence from both early Christian and non-Christian writings attesting to authenticity, authorship, and dating of the Gospels, and as he gives an indepth look at the Gospel accounts of Jesus’ Crucifixion, Resurrection, and the proclamation of Christ’s divinity!

Dr. Pitre’s powerful presentation will strengthen your faith. You can stand firm and profess that Jesus truly is “the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
