FR. MAC’S MESSAGE EASTER SUNDAY OF THE RESURRECTION OF THE LORD Christ Has Risen, He Has Indeed Risen! 02

A very blessed Easter to all of you during these surreal times! Christ has risen; He has indeed risen! We, too, will rise from the torments of this coronavirus.

These days of isolation may seem like we are in the tomb with the Lord and we are anxious to arise out of this tomb and be more fully alive. Our time will come. But the question on Easter Sunday is what have we been doing? When the Lord descended into the realm of the dead, he broke open the chains that bound them and brought those souls that had died, from the time of Adam until the Resurrection, with Him into heaven. The gates of heaven swung open wide. During these days of isolation, are we doing positive things to lift our brothers’ and sisters’ spirits? Are we calling our neighbor, are we encouraging one another through emails or text messages? You can be a ray of sunshine and a glimmer of hope for someone during these days. Our Easter sacrifice to Christ may be our own attitude of positivity, encouragement and faith!

This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad. –Psalm 118:24 This is the Easter message and we need to live it. I realize that many of you, if not most of you, will not be able to gather as a family for Easter dinner. We are still in the throes of isolation and protecting one another from what could be a very deadly virus. But this does not mean that we have to be depressed, and moan and groan. We, who are people of faith, believe in Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, are to be a sign of hope and promise to our family members and one another. Make a concerted

effort to be cheerful! We all do have a real reason to rejoice! Jesus Christ loves us. He suffered and died, far worse pain than you or I are experiencing from just being isolated. He did this out of love. We are to stay away from each other out of love.

Try to keep this day in a spirit of great confidence in Christ. Be of good cheer. Try to interact with your family in any way you can that is safe and lift their spirits. There was an old saying, “If Mum is happy, everyone is happy, if Mum is not happy no one is happy.” Today, whether you are Mum or Grandma or Grandpa or Dad, you be the leader of the family, you be the rock of faith and optimism. You be the person who shows the rest of the family your deep faith and trust in the Ris-en Christ! Show the world that we are true believers and we will not be daunted by a little virus. We will not give up our hope, be depressed, or give up on ourselves because our celebration this Easter isn’t what we are used to. We will show the world that we are Catholic Christians filled with the spirit of Christ!

A very Happy Easter to one an all. I believe this will be an Easter we will all remember very vividly for a long time to come. I pray you and your families are continuing to do well through these difficult days. We continue to pray for all those who are on the “front lines” of this pandemic: those who are working so hard to keep us well, safe and insure our stores have what we need. Those in the medical profession, law enforcement, first responders, mass transit workers, and grocery workers, those who are working so hard to keep the supply chain moving in order to keep our stores supplied. Let us also continue to offer our prayers for all those who have been adversely effected. Those who have recently been laid off and/or have had their work hours cut. May their needs always be met through the generosity of others, and may they soon be able to return to their jobs.

We continue to be grateful to all who have been able to continue supporting the financial needs of the parish. We continue to see increased volume of both mail-in contributions and on-line giving as reflected in this week’s financial support. Your dedication and commitment to our good parish is greatly appreciated. You may have heard of the Stimulus Package that was recently signed into law. Over the last couple of weeks our Diocesan Legal staff has been working hard to provide parishes with interpretations of the law and how it may help them. Under the law there is a section for the SBA Payroll Protection Program stating that any small business with under 500 employees may apply for a loan to assist with salaries, benefits and utility expenses. The good news is we are able to apply for these loans, both for the parish and the school. These loans are forgiven, provided we use the funding for payroll, benefits and utilities.

Under Fr. Mac’s direction, I have begun the application process for these loans for Holy Spirit Parish and St. Vitus School (I realize we are changing the name of the school, however for the loan application we must use its present legal name). The Diocese has also worked to provide us supporting documentation required for the loan application. We have been told it may take up to 8 weeks before we receive any funding. We will continue providing you updates on this matter as we go further in the process. Once again, thanks for all you do for our good parish. May the peace of the Risen Christ be upon you, especially during these unprecedented times. God love you! Deacon John

EASTER SUNDAY OF THE RESURRECTION OF THE LORD

We are so grateful to those who contributed to the Easter Flower collection. Obviously given our current situation with COVID 19, we are unable to gather as Church for the Resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. While we are not able to gather at this time, we look forward to gathering again once this crisis has passed. With that in mind, we are going to use the Easter Flower contributions to decorate our Sanctuaries with fresh flowers for our first weekend back in church. We continue to pray for all who have been affected by this unfortunate virus, and through God’s grace and mercy, it will pass quickly. Jesus Christ is Risen Today! Alleluia! I want to share new lyrics to a song that you can reflect on this Easter Day. The words were written by Carolyn Winfrey Gillette and it is meant to be sung to the tune “The Church’s One Foundation”, so if you remember that tune, SING IT with these words. She has graciously given permission for her words to be shared. This Easter celebration is not like ones we’ve known. We pray in isolation. We sing the hymns alone. We’re distant from our neighbors, from worship leaders too No flowers grace the chancel to set a festive mood. No gathered choirs are singing, no banners lead the way O God of love and promise, where’s joy this Easter Day? With sanctuaries empty, may homes become the place We ponder resurrection and celebrate your grace. Our joy won’t come from worship that’s in a crowded room But from the news of women who saw the empty tomb Our joy comes from disciples who ran with haste to see Who heard that Christ is risen, and then, by grace, believed In all the grief and suffering, may we remember well Christ suffered crucifixion and faced the power of hell Each Easter bears the promise: Christ rose that glorious day! Now nothing in creation can keep Your love away We thank you that on Easter, your church is blessed to be A scattered, faithful body that’s doing ministry In homes and in the places of help and healing too We live the Easter message by gladly serving you. Did you know the term “Octave of Easter” refers to the eight day period start-

ing with Easter Sunday till the fol-lowing Sunday which is also known as the “Octave Day”? The days in between are said to be “within the octave.” The title for each of the days is “Monday in the Octave of Easter,” etc. and is commonly called “Easter Monday,” respectively. The Octave Day of Easter (this year, April 19th) has been known by several other names over the years: Low Sunday, St. Thomas Sunday, White Sunday and Quasimodo Sunday. Pope John Paul II, on April 30, 2000, designated the Octave Day as “Divine Mercy Sunday.” (More on Divine Mercy Sunday next week.) Starting around the 3rd century, Christians began to extend certain feasts beyond the initial day. This meant that the joyous celebration of Easter Sunday was prolonged and lasted full eight days. As an eight-day period it is a way to celebrate the solemnity of Easter and prolong it’s joy. What other ways can you continue the JOY of Easter?
