Our Chicken Que Ticket Sale is off and running. This is the
largest fund raiser of the year and the funds raised during
this sale are used to support field trips, playground
equipment, assemblies, environmental projects, classroom
specific needs, and many other activities. I want to remind
all families that a representative from the PTO will be in the
foyer each morning over the next two weeks for students to
turn in their money and to get additional tickets to sell. The
sale runs from April 7th to 8:00 AM on Tuesday, April 25th.
Students are excited about the prizes the staff is providing
again this year. The prize sheet is attached to this newsletter.
There will be no school April 13-17 and school will resume on
Tuesday, April 18th. Beginning on April 18th all 3-5 grade
students will be taking the State Forward Exam. We ask all
parents of 3-5 students to do all you can during this two week
period to ensure students are present. Results of this year’s
state testing won’t be available until sometime this summer.
We have our K-5 trip to the La Crosse County Landfill
scheduled for Thursday, April 20th. Permission slips along
with lunch choices for the day went out this past week. We
have very limited room for parent volunteers for this trip.
The Landfill has requested this due to no available parking at
their facility and we want to honor their request. Teachers
will be contacting parents if needed and everyone attending
this trip will need to ride the buses with students and staff.
Finally, Fox 25/48 has additional stories featuring Summit
programming airing this week. You can also check these out along with several Green
Tips featuring our students at wiproud.com.

Staffing Changes for 2017-2018 at Summit Environmental School
We have several staffing changes for next fall. The following staff will be retiring at the end of this school year…. Kevin Baird – 2nd grade classroom teacher John Michels – Health Assistant Paula Hueners – Occupational Therapist Marianne Buchanan – Strings Teacher We also have some staff moving on to other positions in the District… Lila Planavsky – Intellectual Disabilities Teacher will be the LMC Director at Longfellow/LDI I want to thank these staff members for their service to our students and families and wish them well as they move on to the next steps in their careers and lives. We have already begun interviewing for replacements for staff. I am happy to announce that Lacey Sinn has been hired to replace Mr. Baird in 2nd grade. Mrs. Sinn has many years of classroom teaching experience and most recently she has served as a literacy and instructional coach in our district. We are excited that she will be joining Team Summit. I also want to say a special thank you to Carol Geszvain for her many years of service on our PTO Board, most recently as our PTO Secretary. Carol has assisted and run so many different fund raising events for many years. Her youngest child, Luke, is a 5th grader and moving on to the middle school next year. Thanks Carol for your many years of service.
It is that time of year again when Farm 2 School asks for your help in making the program better. Below is the link to a short survey for parents/caregivers to take. It is very similar to the survey sent out last year. The surveys will remain open until 4/14. We will again be giving away six $50 farmers’ market gift cards so it may be very well worth the time to take. Your feedback is important to us. The more responses we receive the more accurate a picture we get to view. Thank you in advance for taking the time to complete this important survey. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/f2sparent

Nutrition Info
Garlic has many vitamins and minerals including vitamin B-6 and manganese.
Fun Facts
Garlic has been around for thousands of years – King Tut had garlic with him when he was buried!
Get rid of the smell of garlic on your skin by running your hands under cold water while rubbing them on a stainless steel object.
Uses
Garlic adds flavor to many dishes! The smaller you cut garlic, the more intense the flavor.
Garlic is tasty in pizza and spaghetti sauces, casseroles, dressings, breads, and soups! Garlic can be used to season many recipes. You can also use fresh garlic in place of
powered/granulated garlic.
1 clove of fresh minced garlic = 1/3 teaspoon of garlic powder
Family Friendly Activities
Grow your own garlic at home this spring! All you need is a few garlic heads, potting soil, and a planting pot. Follow the easy steps below:
1. Fill your container with soil.
2. Separate the cloves (leave the papery leaves on) and place them at about 1 inch deep in the soil and cover with soil.
3. Place your container in the sunlight and water regularly.
4. When the green tops begin to dry up in the fall, your bulb can be dug up and used. Alternatively, young “green garlic” can be pulled up and used for a more mild flavor.
Farm2School Updates
20 square foot garden kits are being donated to ReNEW La Crosse for their annual revitalization and community development efforts for the Lower Northside
Neighborhood in La Crosse. The kits, which include frame, hardware, soil and how to guide, are being donated by Mayo Clinic Health System Franciscan Healthcare, WisCorps Inc., and Purple Cow Organics as a means to help improve community
wellness. Seeds and seedlings, featuring some of the 2017 Harvest of the Month items will be donated along with the kits. These are being facilitated by Hillview
Urban Agriculture Center, the La Crosse Seed Library and GROW La Crosse.
For more information about how to receive a square foot gardening kit or to volunteer for the event visit:
www.habitatlacrosse.org/programs/renew-la-crosse/
Pick:
•Choose garlic that is plump and has unbroken skin.
Store:
•Store garlic in a cool dry place away from heat and sunlight.
•Avoid refrigerating fresh garlic as this decreases the
flavor and will dehydrate the bulb.
Prepare:
•Garlic comes in bulbs that can be broken apart into cloves.
•Remove the papery layers from each garlic clove. (Hint:
you can smash the garlic cloves with the side of a knife
to help peel the skin)
•Garlic can be minced, smashed or placed in a garlic
press.
