You IMMEDIATELY become upset because you do not like seeing your child this way and you know that your child has to be the victim here because why else would they be this upset. At this point I ask you to STOP, LISTEN, QUESTION, have a conversation, and wait 24 hours. STOP: Do not join your student in the emotional reaction. Often due to their age, lack of emotional experience and maturity, and possibly hormones, the emotional reaction is their first one. If you jump in with them, that fire can become an inferno. LISTEN: When they come to you upset, crying, and extremely emotional. Require that they calm themselves down first before they continue to talk. This skill is very important as it teaches everyone to manage their emotions and we all know that better decision making comes with a cooler head. QUESTION: Once your student is calm, ask them several questions. Such as: "What happened before this situation started?" "This person was mean to you out of the blue/for no reason?" "When did this start?" "Did you say anything to this person before the argument started?" ""Was anyone else involved?" This will help you gain a clearer picture and help the student to see that often their actions affect the actions of others. Most young stu- dents do not understand another person's point of view and have a hard time putting themselves in someone else's shoes (empathy). Conversation: Once you do all of this, ask you student if they would do anything differently. If they are still struggling to see where they can make different choices, jump in and help them with that. Finally, GIVE IT 24 hours: Often when we are upset, we say and do things that we would not normally do. If the situation is not an emergen- cy (an emergency is an imminent threat to someone's life or blood loss), and you have gone through all of the steps above, wait at least a day. I know, I know. You want to do something NOW! But remember we are not at our best when we are emotional and upset AND in kid time a whole lot can change in 24 hours. After 24 hours, revisit the situation with your student. Often, you will be surprised at the re- sponse! In the light of a new day, to a child, something that happened yesterday, may not seem as urgent as it did the day before. As adults we hold on to things, but children have the ability to move on from things much quicker than we do. If your student is still as upset as when they initially approached you MIGHT have a rescue situation. If not, by resisting the urge to jump in, you are teaching them the skills to problem solve, communicate, manage their emotions positively, make smart decisions, use empathy and SO much more!

COUNSELOR’S CORNER:

To Rescue or NOT to Rescue: So your student comes home extremely upset, crying even that someone at school was mean to them or

bullying them OR their teacher does not like them and is treating them unfairly. You IMMEDIATELY become upset because you do not like

seeing your child this way and you know that your child has to be the victim here because why else would they be this upset. At this point I

ask you to STOP, LISTEN, QUESTION, have a conversation, and wait 24 hours.

STOP: Do not join your student in the emotional reaction. Often due to their age, lack of emotional experience and maturity, and possibly

hormones, the emotional reaction is their first one. If you jump in with them, that fire can become an inferno.

LISTEN: When they come to you upset, crying, and extremely emotional. Require that they calm themselves down first before they continue

to talk. This skill is very important as it teaches everyone to manage their emotions and we all know that better decision making comes

with a cooler head.

QUESTION: Once your student is calm, ask them several questions. Such as:

"What happened before this situation started?"

"This person was mean to you out of the blue/for no reason?"

"When did this start?"

"Did you say anything to this person before the argument started?"

""Was anyone else involved?"

This will help you gain a clearer picture and help the student to see that often their actions affect the actions of others. Most young stu-

dents do not understand another person's point of view and have a hard time putting themselves in someone else's shoes (empathy).

Conversation: Once you do all of this, ask you student if they would do anything differently. If they are still struggling to see where they can

make different choices, jump in and help them with that.

Finally, GIVE IT 24 hours: Often when we are upset, we say and do things that we would not normally do. If the situation is not an emergen-

cy (an emergency is an imminent threat to someone's life or blood loss), and you have gone through all of the steps above, wait at least a

day. I know, I know. You want to do something NOW! But remember we are not at our best when we are emotional and upset AND in kid

time a whole lot can change in 24 hours. After 24 hours, revisit the situation with your student. Often, you will be surprised at the re-

sponse! In the light of a new day, to a child, something that happened yesterday, may not seem as urgent as it did the day before. As

adults we hold on to things, but children have the ability to move on from things much quicker than we do.

If your student is still as upset as when they initially approached you MIGHT have a rescue situation. If not, by resisting the urge to jump in,

you are teaching them the skills to problem solve, communicate, manage their emotions positively, make smart decisions, use empathy

and SO much more!
