LAS VEGAS—The Ama-teur Bowler’s Tour will host a Mayday Payday Tournament at Sam’s Town in Las Vegas on April 29 – May 1, 2011. First place in this tournament is GUARANTEED at $8000 for an $80 entry fee. Re-entries will be $50. Applications are available at all tournaments. Walk-ins are also welcome.

The San Diego tournament will be Saturday, April 16, 2011 at Mira Mesa Lanes. The address is 8210 Mira Mesa Boulevard. Phone is 858-578-0500. Squad times are at 12N, 1:30 and 3PM. First place is guaranteed at $1500 with Mega Progressive regardless of entries.

BOWLERS JUNCTION PRO SHOP TEAM Sets National Record

by Frank WeilerREDLANDS—The Bowlers Junction Pro Shop mixed four-

some set a national USBC record just over a week ago. Bowl-ing in EMPIRE BOWL’S “Odds N Ends” League, this group of scratch bowlers torched the lanes for a 1120 game (280 aver-age).

This single game score is the highest ever bowled by a team of three men and one woman. The previous high was a 1112 rolled by the Triple Threat Team, of Union City, Georgia, on De-cember 10, 2006.

The “Junction Juggernaut” set their record in the second of three games, on a cold night in southern California. Fortunately, they had enough tape available to keep their thumbs in the ball and a firm grip while on the lanes.

The names and scores posted by our record-setters follow:

AMF NATIONAL BOWLING TOURNAMENT WINNERS ANNOUNCED

Californian Wins $50,000 in prize money in this year’s richest bowling tournamentThe chase for bowling

glory begins with 108 finalists, each an AMF league bowler, divided into four divisions. The divisions are based upon the skill level of the bowler and their qualifying bowling average. Competitors were whittled down through an elimination-style format to determine the national cham-pions. Although only one person in each division was crowned the $50,000 grand prize winner, every national fi-nalist walked away with prize money, ranging from $25,000 for second place to $250 for the bowlers finishing in 17th to 27th place.

“The nature of the pins-over-average format creates excitement through each round of competition and illustrates the competitor’s ability to

perform under pres-sure and compete at a level above their qualifying average,” said Kathy hart, tournament direc-tor. “These talented participants are com-peting against them-selves in essence, and you can truly feel the excitement.”

Division winners worked their way through a nine-week qualifying period, followed by two weeks of in-center finals at each AMF location and 27 district finals events at select AMF locations nationwide. AMF already has awarded ap-proximately $300,000 in prize money to center and district finalists.

SO. CALIF. DEAF BOWLERS CASHED IN GREAT LAKES DEAF TOURNAMENT AT LAS VEGASLAS VEGAS—This writer regretted not being able to get complete results of the 75th anniver-

sary Great Lakes Deaf Bowling Association tournament. Only the Doubles and Singles results were posted for all to read but too high for this writer with poor sight to catch the top names and scores. The people who ran the tournament did not furnish copies to the press or bowling writers so we will have to wait 30 days to get the complete results by mail.

Therefore, while we wait, there is some news and scores to mention here. Although this writer did not see it happened, he was told that a guy named Carter rolled a 300 and another guy hit a 299. In the companion Great Lakes Deaf Women Bowling Association tournament, Deaf Team USA star Lindy Decker, PA tied the GLDWBA high game record with her 279.

Also someone hit 779 for the tournament high series which means that California’s Carl Maluc-ci’s 766 (279-268-219) was not the high one. There were many 700s but the only ones mentioned were Paul Kuplicki, Jr., Detroit’s 726 (233-219-274) in singles and Paul Trayner, Detroit’s 706 in team.

No one mentioned who won the singles, doubles and team events but Nicholas LoGreco said his Detroit ‘Strike Villains’ got the high scratch team score 3297 but another team scored the high team handicap total to beat his team’s 3 handicap 3300 total. So the unknown team scored 3300 plus for the $5,000 first place prize. Then LoGreco’s team is in line for the handicap 2nd place prize of $2,500.

There were two or three teams scoring in 3200 and a couple in 3100s before Pablo Yoma’s So. Calif. Deaf Bowlers’ 3134 and Malucci’s Storm Deaf All-Stars’ 3113. They probably cash in 8th and 9th places respectively.

Interesting to note that of the 46 teams entered, 11 were over 1000 (200 average per bowler) in this handicap tournament. No teams over maximum cap of 1025 were allowed to enter. So one team with exactly 1025 (Malucci’s Storm Deaf All-Stars) and other with 1024 (Rod hood, Jr’s No Sideburn but Still Good) bowled with zero handicap per game. LoGreco’s Strike Villains with 1023 bowled with 1 handicap per game.

Back in 2007 LoGreco’s former team ‘Always Pockets 1st & 3rd’ set GLDBA all time high scratch record 3348, breaking his older team ‘Fast’N Furious’ 3334 made in 2005. The team handi-cap record is 3572 set by Chicago’s West Suburban Association of the Deaf in 2009.

So for now, we wait for the full results to be written in this column later.

Bowlers Tour (ABT) championship at Westminster Lanes on Sunday, April 10, 2011 during our 3-game Beat-the-Board tour-nament. Melvin bowled in the 1PM squad and shot games of 237, 235 and 215 with handicap for a series total of 698 and the $230 1st place prize. Alan Aguilar came in second shooting a 689 with handicap. Low to cash was +84.

Our newest championship, Melvin Bunkley lives in Colton and is an accountant at Financial Corporation of America. Mel-vin was using a Lane 1 Cobalt Bomb drilled by Wes Mallott for the win this weekend. Melvin sports a high game of 300 and a high series of 834. Melvin wanted to thank Cherrita and Cathy for their support and encouragement and his twin brother, Kevin, for his competition. Melvin also wanted to thank Westminster Lanes for hosting the tournament and the ABT directors for run-ning an outstanding tournament.

go again! Another older se-nior Citrus Belt bowler has rolled a perfect game. Just after writing about JAMES CAMPBELL bowling 300 at the age of 79, I heard about BOB URBAN having rolled a perfecto in 2009, at the age of 80. Guess what? Just over a week ago ChUCK DAWSON bowled his fourth and latest perfect game, at the age of 82 years, two months, and nine-teen days. he is now the old-est known Citrus Belt bowler to roll a perfect game. Any older perfectionist should con-tact me.

Why did I refer to Chuck as Mr. Charles Dawson? Because he has earned my respect over the years, as a genuine gentle-man. he is always courteous, calm, and collected. A great guy, with integrity and intel-ligence.

Chuck has been bowling for nearly sixty-one years, with a high series of 767 and a best average of 207 in 1995. he used his Ebonite NVS to roll his recent perfecto, in EM-PIRE BOWL’S Vegas Invita-tional league. he would like to thank MARV SARGENT and CORKY DeMAIO for drilling his bowling balls.

Another $3500 To Japanby B.A. Campbell

ORANGE – The most generous and considerate people in the world have to be the bowlers and proprietors sending their hard-earned dollars to the Japanese people overseas after the ongoing earthquakes and disaster there. Marge Miyoda, OC Bowling hall of Fame member and longtime bowler, has been encouraged by the response to the impromptu Japan Quake Relief fundraiser she is facilitating. Ms. Miyoda recently wired another $3,530 in donations to the Bowling Proprietors Of Japan (BPAJ)--which makes the total sent since the start of the fundraiser: $6,451!

Emrich Blasts Perfect Game & 823 Series at Keystone/ ABTA David Emrich (center) Blasted a perfect game and a huge 823 Scratch Series at the ABTA Keystone Event. NORWALK — We returned to Keystone Lanes this past weekend for a two day tournament and had a fair turnout of 154 entries.. The shot was quite easy due to Key-stone having multiple events this weekend. Cut scores on Saturday +112 for the men and +94 for the Women. On Sunday in our 1 squad, the cut score was +128 for the men and +48 for the women. The Super Seniors added to the board (3 men and 1 female) were Rollie Ebilane (+111), Victor Paolucci and Joe Nolan (+110), and for the women it was BJ Jemison (+12). That would give us 40 bowlers making it to the semi-finals.

For all qualifying squads, our top qualifier for the Men was Da-vid Emrich with a huge +283, and for the women it was LaSandra Chaney with a +114. David also started out Sunday Morning with a 300 game, and followed that up with 257 and then a 266 for an 823 scratch series. Each will get a paid entry into a future regular ABTA event. Our top seed draws the Match Series, and this week it was worth $270. Emrich drew a 631 and there were no matches. Next week at Westminster, we will esti-mate the Match Series at $600. For the 3-6-9 qualifying this week, we had Anthony Jilek survive the roll-off to go for the pot, but he would miss on his 1st shot, getting $50 consolation. We will add another $100 at Westminster giving us a total of $2,100. There is a reserve pot of $1,000 also.

This week the doubles finish-ing in first were David Emrich and Alex Castillo with a 1629 for $130. Finishing second was David Emrich and Mike J. Moore with 1545 for $110. We had a total of $1,060 paid out in doubles with low to cash of 1433.

In the semis this week, we would see the Ladies jump out and lead the pack during each round. Winding up with the lead after 3 games was Annaliza Agoncillo with a big +199. Close behind was Alex Castillo with a +198. We would have a tie for the final spot at +91. Don Eide and Aaron hodges had the 9th and 10th frame roll-off to see who would make it to the Match Play and Aaron ad-vanced.

The top seed in semi-finals had the honor of drawing the match game worth $935, and Annaliza drew a 192. We had 3 bowlers who matched that score, they were Don Eide, Jeffery Sargent, and 1 of our fine directors Marvin Crowder. Each would take home $311. We will estimate the pot next week at $1,200 at Westminster Lanes. This week we had three new bowlers join us. Let us welcome these new bowlers to the club, Steve Moreno Sr, Jic Opiana, Sirinya Boony-indee.

Match play would begin, and in the first round the seven losers were Aaron hodges, Renoir Land, Richard Lim, Kelly Wynn, Cleve Johnson, Talia St. Angelo, and Joe Torre, Jr. They received checks of $100 each. In the second round, the losers Alex Castillo, Butch “Snake”hobbs, George Parker, and Michael Villarreal received checks of $107.50 each. This would get us down to the final four bowlers. At this point, our horses would be paying anywhere from a low of $48 (Jennifer Grant) to a high of $410 (Jesse Lane, Jr) $410 on Jesse? OMG “hehe”depending on who would win. In this round we saw Brandon Grant (3rd seed) bowling Jesse Lane (15th seed). In this match, Brandon would get the better of Jesse with a 241 to 181

finish. In the other match we saw Jennifer Grant (7th seed) bowl-ing Jun Tumacy (13th seed). In this match, Jennifer would get the better of Venturito with a 225 to 187 finish. Jun and Jesse finished in 4th and 5th getting checks for $115 each. Our semi-final match was set with our 3rd seed against our 7th seed, plus better yet it would be a little battle between husband and wife. In 30 years this is only the 3rd time this has hap-pened, so it is neat folks-))and of course the Grants are neat people so it fits !! Brandon would start by giving his wife a lucky kiss to start the match. They would both start off with strikes, but in the 2nd frame Jennifer would leave the 6-7-10 and missed all on the 2nd shot. Brandon would continue to strike in the first 4 frames. At this point Brandon was in the lead and would not look back, but contin-ued to offer support and help to his wife. Brandon would finish with a 248/264 to 164/212. That would give Brandon the victory and for those lucky “investors” that had Brandon as a horse, he paid $54. Jennifer finished 3rd and received $200. She is a past champion by the way!

The title game was set on Lanes 43 and 44 this week. An-naliza being the top seed elected to have Brandon begin the match first. In the first frame Annaliza would open up with a missed 10 pin, had torn her thumb a bit so had to adjust her tape which is frustrating. She then had another open in the third frame to put her down by 5 pins after 3 frames with handicap. Both would get strikes in the 4th and 5th frames, but An-naliza would not get a strike in the 6th frame. After the 7th frame, Brandon had a 2 pin lead, and both

bowlers would have strikes in the 8th frame and Brandon would get his 9th frame strike. That would bring Annaliza up to finish out the match first. She would get a strike in the 9th frame and the first one in the 10th frame but left the 9 pin (pocket) on her second shot.. That would bring up Brandon and he had to have the first strike and 8. he threw a great shot, carried to finish with a 235/251 to 216/248 for his 1st ABTA Championship. Brandon has been with the ABTA since 2008 and admittingly has had some let’s say trying times. I will say I have never heard him complain. In fact he always had a great attitude! his wife had a much better record in the ABTA but now he is the Champion and deservedly so. he is one of the Good Guys

Brandon would take home $1,000 for the win, and an addi-tional $850 in Cash & Carry total of $1,850 for his win. Annaliza re-ceived $500 for 2nd place.

Champion Brandon Grant is from Bellflower and used a Mis-sion drilled at Keystone. he is a Coach in high School Football coach at Dominguez and the Track coach at Mayfair high also. (Busy guy) And of course he is married to our 3rd place finisher Jennifer who used a Mission drilled by Al at Keystone. They have 3 chil-dren. Special thank you to the MAN above for all his blessings, each other of course, keeping them grounded and all their friends for the support and cheering during the title, semi-final matches and “Lucky”, their dog. he thanks the ABTA Staff for friendliness and a great job. Annaliza Agoncillo (2nd Place) is from Long Beach and used a Storm Rapid Fire drilled by Josh at Cal Bowl. She is mar-ried to Arnold and have 2 children Aren and Anne. She would like to thank her Cousin Alvin, an-other fine ABTA bowler and past Champion, her family, especially her brother Arnold who just got back from San Francisco in time to see her match. Great people here!! You bowled so great, what a performance by a sweet lady who bowls most every week!!

Champion Profile: Our newest champion, Dino Reyes, is a life-time ABT member and has been bowling for over 30 years. Dino sports a high game of 278 and high series of 680. Dino was using Roto-Grip equipment drilled by Ben Mach for the win this weekend. Dino wanted to thank Theresa and Ramon Maloles, Cliff higgins and Sheri Cross for their encouragement during the tournament. Dino also wanted to thank Jackie herndon for not bowling!! round. They used Paul Varela 226-211-253/690, Ramon Torres 214-226-226/666, Chris Porter 222-228/626 and Leonard Ruiz 215-202/615 to down Katie Jakes. Kevin Gallagher 278-212/681 tried to hold Katie Jakes up, but the team suffered without a couple of their regular bowlers.

Bowlers Depot kept themselves in the race by taking four from Clyde’s Video Games. Steve Gurrieri 235-258-221/714, Jeff Carr 225-247-226/698 and Raul Rosales 211-227-205/643 paved the way as Ramiro Garcia 214-231-248/693 and Dave Bartlett 254-207/644 tried to hold them off, only managing to win the first game.

Sysco swept Linder Insurance thanks to Vernon Adams 215-205-300/720, Paul Barraco 255-213-212/680 and harry Wong 257-212/636. Linder Insurance must have realized the date, and no one broke six.

Zavala’s Taquerias broke ABTA’s winning streak. Jeff Garrison 229-246-219/694 and Greg Neuer 235-209/607 led Zavala’s to a sweep.

Threadworks’ Darrion Tipton 204-213-236/653 and Gary Wright 256/613 took four from Bow-lium’s Arnold Cheesman 275/637 and Mark Fisser 212-203/607.

LAKE FOREST—Bowling the DORIS OZMENT Ladies Monday afternoon league, Yoshiko Pitkin was high bowler again this week, with a 504 scratch series. But, it was Loisanne Sage who hammered out the highest game for the ladies, a super 199! The next highest series was Joyce Myers with 502, and the next highest game was Jean huffman with a huffy 190. Third high series was bowled by Linda Imler who almost hit the 500 mark with a 185/490 and third high game was rolled by Jo Palmer, 187.

The GIL JAY MEN’S LEAGUE bowl down-wind from the Doris Ozment League, so as not to get distracted by the lovely fragrances the ladies wear.( Well, that’s what I heard anyway.) This week nothing could distract Cliff Miller, he stayed focused on his game and shot 202/521, next high series was Don Capobianco 190/521 and third high series was hans Kratz with 499. Tom Ballew and Lou Johnson both had nice 191 games.

The NFL SCRATCH LEAGUE doesn’t worry about whether they are up-wind or down- wind, they just “shoot the eyes out of em.” Mike Pardue shot the high series this past week with a 932, and close behind was Joe Campos with a 929 followed by Dan Murray’s 912. high games were certainly worth observing too, as Butch hewett shot 277, Kevin Kwan 270 and Steve Zimmerman 268. (Wish I could shoot like that.) The ladies certainly weren’t left out of the lime light when Laura Conklin shot a terrific 855, Michele McKovich 793 and Sherry Merrifield 757. High games were 223 by Melisa Gould, 221 by Tia Chang and Kristi Zimmer-man 214. There are 25 men averaging over 200 with Jim Cameron leading with a 224 avg for 120 games. Every gal in the league averages over 175 with Laura Conklin leading with a 201 for 112 games. “That’s not too shabby.”

TUESDAY MIXERS Larry Anderson scored the highest scratch series this week with 243-200/609, next was Ray MacLean 233-202-604, and third high was Tiden Cheng 547. The highest scores for the ladies were shot by Simona harrison 203-187/567. Connie Barnes 198/522, Sheri Tateyama 503, and Rilla Brown 199/501.

HITS AND MISSES is no longer the quiet little social league it once was. No sir! Averages have climbed and scores are getting higher every week. Drew Sebilian knew what it was all about this week with 246-235/671, Brent Evans was no slouch either, and he blasted 245-218/648. Lovell Krisher was consistently good too with 219-215-213/647.Then along came Mike Johnson 11222/613. Ladies, ladies, ladies, ye be so right and I promise to list your scores first next week. Sonia Sabado scored 181/489, Merly Croox 473, Banny Ramos 469, Debbie Taylor shot high game 189, and Sally hunter bowled a nice 180.

3 Game SCRATCH CHALLENGE Congratulations to our top five men bowlers who all scored over 700 this week. Our own Pro Shop owner, Jeff Carr 279-268/745, Bill McKee 276-257/744, Bill Brossart 257-243-233/733, Steve Zimmerman 269-227-226/722 and Mike Cacace 256-227-224/707. Ladies who bowled like the pros were Kimberly Martin 243-216-205/664, Alma Reyes 236-201/630, Carole Reese 219-202/614. Great bowling gals!

DUTCH WELLS SENIOR SCRATCH It’s no surprise that Don Capobianco was “top dog” this week, when he scored 245-241/ 670 When he gets going, there is no stopping him. Other top bowlers were Chuck Conrad 581,and Bob Modzik 566. The ladies showed their stuff too and Junita MacMorris shot high series with 513, and Barbara Korthase shot 505. high games were Edna Sides 194, Juanita MacMorris 194 and Lois Gebler 191.

SVUSD What does that stand for, you ask? Well, I don’t really know but I’ll find out and let you know next week. Anyway they sure can bowl! howard Stephens shot 268-213/ 678. Dan Moreno 211-205/580. Ed Valdes 204/571, Jack Opkins 206, Ed Valdes 204. In the ladies side it was Jackie Kelly 201/526, Laura Blackie 158/415 and Dianna harrison 412 high this week.

MEGA VEGAS If you say you have never heard of Sam hitchcock, then you’re not reading the California Bowling News often enough. This week hitchcock shot 279-224/712 Yikes! Then Ernie Nietzke almost hit the 700 mark with 257-226-214/697 and Ed Regehr 248-225/671 Chris McDonald 636, Keith Klagge 624, Giancarlo Zappala 612 and our own Dave Snow squeaked in a 247 for a 600. We’re very proud of our gals this week also; Lisa Ross 247-21-627, Kristi Zimmerman 214-207-205/626, And Sandy Rosenblum 220/600. by Stacy Rider ANAHEIM — In the thursday linbrook juniors, Andrew Stewart slugged the high game with 243. Tim Oh tackled 224-206. For the gals, Morgan Gober grounded 162. In the junior Adult Doubles, Andrew Stewart scrambled up 245-195-255 for a super 695 series. Abbott Hatch hammered 227-218-180 for a terrific 625 series. Nicholas Gallant grabbed 214. For the adults, Janine Ditch delivered 239 and Alan Lovato linked 200. In the Bumper Busters, Kaylee Pearlman smashd 73 and then posted a season high game of 120. Shai Gardner strolled to her season high game with a fantastic 118 and added 75 in game 2. Other awesome scores were rolled by Khamron Gardner 106-75, Amber Sanderson 105-70, Brayden Singleton with a pair of 102 games, Nevaeh Carlton 78-102, Alan Gonzales 101-82 and Jozlyn Johnson 76-72.
