The Parishes of
Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord April 14, 2019
Fr. Joe’s article continued on Page 3
MALLIA'S MOMENTS
by Fr. Joe Mallia
Today the Church recalls when Jesus entered
Jerusalem triumphantly. There were those who
cheered and those who jeered. Those cheering
were in greater number that day, but in less then a
week, the roles would be reversed. The crowds
who got caught up in the euphoria of joy are soon
caught up in the cascade of calls for his death. By
Good Friday, the anger against Jesus was so great
that Pilate was afraid of a riot and so he gave in to
the will of the crowd. Pilate orders a murderer to be
released and Jesus to be condemned. Think about
how quickly we can turn away from God.
We live in an age where people are swayed by
“likes” on Facebook and an emoji on Twitter and
text messages. Like the people of the time of
Jesus, people want to be “part of the in crowd.” No
matter how much we say we want to be an
individual, we give in to modern ways of dress,
various slang terms of speech and even values and
attitudes. How else could people go from cheering
to jeering the same person in a matter of five days?
If I just do what the majority of people do then I
never need to be held accountable for what I say or
do and I can just blend into the crowd. There is
safety in numbers after all.
But the true disciple is willing to be counted even
when they have to swim against the tide. Only a
few followers of Jesus are recorded to be at the foot
of the cross on the day he died; not very many
considering the crowds of Palm Sunday. The true
disciple is focused on values and attitudes that
reflect the love of God and not the whims of a
society whose opinions are like chaff in the wind.
True Christianity is a journey from what others
profess to a personal awareness of the truth. It is a
spiritual path that moves from the cross to the
resurrection with the power of Pentecost! Unless
we make that journey, we too are very susceptible
to the crowd mentality that moves people to cheer
and jeer in the matter of days or less. It is the
journey of faith that grounds us in the strength of
God and does not allow us to fluctuate between
truth and desires or wants.
That is why Holy Week is such a special time. It
challenges us to think about our commitment to
Christ. Do we cheer and jeer him; do we follow him
or ignore him? Are we willing to bend to the will of a
crowd or do we stand at the foot of the cross of
Christ? Do we return to the lives we have created or
do we live in the light of the resurrection?
How will you spend this next week? I encourage
you to make a special effort to journey through these
holy days as a special time in your lives. We all
need to do better at anchoring our lives in faith so
that the winds of the times do not blow us off course.
Let us be together in prayer during this time for
ourselves, for those who have fallen away from the
faith and for those who need us to be an example of
fidelity so that they can find the God whom they do
not even know. God bless you all.

Special Mass times for next weekend:
Please remember that the mass next Saturday
evening is at 8:30 pm. There is no mass at 4:30 or
6:00 pm next week only.
Easter Sunday masses: St. Augustine will
have mass at 7:30, 9:00 and 11:00 am. Holy
Family will have mass at 8:00 & 10:30 am and
noon. The added masses are to help disperse the
numbers of people who attend mass for Easter.
Please be aware that there are more people than
normal at mass this day.
I would also encourage more of you to attend
mass at the Easter Vigil on Saturday night. It is a
very unique mass and though it is longer, it is a
beautiful liturgical experience. Please consider
attending.
Finally, please pay attention to the parking lot
volunteers who will be in the lot on Easter Sunday
morning. The better we follow the guides to proper
parking on the way in, the better and more orderly
we will be able to clear the lot after mass. Thank
you for following the directions.

opportunity to confess your sins this Lent, there are

Easter Food Blessing:
Have you ever thought of having your Easter meal
blessed at church before you eat it? How about the
children’s Easter basket? This great tradition of
having the first meal of Easter blessed comes from a
time when Christians would fast from Good Friday
until Easter Sunday!
If you have never done this before,
normally people will bring the food in
a wicker basket. It will have the
meat, cheese, butter, eggs (colored
or not), bread, wine and other
elements of the Easter meal. The
children’s baskets can also be
brought.
There will be a blessing of food in the Life Center
at Holy Family and in the Social Hall at St.
Augustine at noon on Holy Saturday. Please join
us. The whole prayer service is only about 20
minutes, so don’t be late or you will miss it. See you
there.
Have a happy Holy Week my friends.

Do you have a hole in your heart? Has the loss of a
loved one been causing depression, anxiety or simply
a sadness that refuses to go away? Do you feel alone,
like no one around you understands?
If we trust in God and one another, then help is on the
way. St. Augustine and Holy Family parishes are
forming a group that will provide support, friendship
and a deeper understanding of both life and death. Led
by Deacon Alan, who himself lost his wife Marilyn six
years ago to cancer, “Good Mourning” will provide an
opportunity to simply be with others who are on the
same road in life. Anyone who has suffered loss is
welcome, whether that loss was a spouse, family
member or friend.
The emphasis of the group will be people helping
people. Our Faith will be the cornerstone on this
journey; we will rely on the Holy Spirit to guide each of
us in a way that we can lift one another up, share our
stories and develop friendships that will begin a healing
that only Jesus Christ can provide.
Jesus wept at the loss of his friend Lazarus; mourning
is a human emotion that has meaning and purpose.
But as with all things, Jesus can give us a new
understanding; in faith we will be able to begin to move
forward and trust in Our Lord. Our sadness can be
transformed into “Good Mourning” that has the power
to begin to heal us and others.
If interested, please contact Deacon Alan at
[email protected] or call him at 586-
206-8334. Meetings will begin shortly after Easter.

Festival Volunteer Opportunity
The St. Augustine Flea Market is
looking for families with a truck to help
pick up items from estate sales for the
Festival Flea Market in August. The
flea market has expanded and more
items are being donated by estates,
which helps to bring more income
during the festival. We have a place
to store the items, but need people
with trucks to help us pick them up for
storage. If we have 4 or more families
with a pickup truck, each family would
hopefully need to help us only one
time. It would only take about 90
minutes to pick up and store these
items. If you think you could help,
please contact Linda Pecoraro at 586-
453-4018. Your help would be greatly
appreciated.

HOLY FAMILY PARISH CELEBRATION, 2019
This year the Parish Festival will be taking place on Saturday, June 15th and Sunday, June 16th. On
Saturday there will be a dinner / dance for the adults, with a movie on the big screen for the children.
The dinner will be catered by Village Café and music (dance, rock, and classic rock) preformed by The
“Favorites” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYlO0AJ5YME). Tickets for dinner should be
purchased in advance and can be picked up in the Parish Office. Festivities will begin at 5:30 p.m. and
will be under the big tent. During dinner there will be a LIVE AUCTION. While at dinner, children can go
watch a free movie on the big screen in the gymnasium. The silent
auction will be open for bids until 10:00 p.m. The beer tent will be
open until midnight .
On Sunday the 10:30 a.m. Mass will be held under the tent.
Immediately following Mass will be a free-will offering BBQ. The
K of C will be hosting BINGO and the Silent Auction will be open
for bids. For the kids, there will be games and activities. Under the
big tent there will be a D.J. The Grand Raffle will be drawn at 3:00
p.m. Once again this year, there will be a children’s raffle. Each
child present will receive one raffle ticket. The drawing will be at
3:00 p.m. and the child must be present to win.
Please watch the bulletin for more details and opportunities to
volunteer.

Christian Service in 4th & 5th Grades
Throughout the New Testament, we can read of stories where
Jesus is helping a less fortunate person. His help could be as
simple as providing food to the hungry, or as miraculous as
restoring sight. No matter what Jesus did, he did it with an open
heart and didn’t look for accolades.
As a teacher, I try to instill the importance of helping others.
Some years it may be a field trip to Gleaners to pack backpacks
for kids in need. It could be a collection of food or supplies for the
local animal shelters. This year the 4th and 5th grades paired up
and collected plastic grocery bags. Yes, the type you get from
Kroger or any other store.
These bags were collected and will be made into mats for the
homeless. Each mat uses 700 bags. Besides helping the less
fortunate, the collecting of the bags is also putting less plastics in
landfills. This is just one activity the school does to earn a
“Green School” status.
I encourage you to spend time as a family practicing Christian
service. There are so many activities we could all get involved in,
regardless of the time of year. Here are a few ideas, but the list
is limitless!
• Stop in and visit a home-bound neighbor or friend.
• Send a greeting card (through snail mail) to let a distant
relative know that you are thinking of her/him.
• Spend some time playing with the cats at the St. Clair animal
shelter (SNAP).
• Donate to the giving tree at Christmas.
• Keep extra bottled water in your car in case you come
across someone thirsty while out and about.
• Smile at someone when you would rather frown.
Remember what Jesus said: For I was hungry and you gave me
food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink. I was a stranger and
you welcomed meMM(Matthew 25:35)
