The day after Sabbath, and the people are waving palm branches (political symbols of Zionist zealotry), and shouting political things about kings and the Son of David. The day after Sabbath, and the joyous, riotous throngs and throwing their coats in front of someone who is riding into town on a donkey - which was itself a political statement, a claim to be the prophesied savior king. Yesterday was so quiet, but today is noisy, and it is a unsettling noise. The people shouting are full of joy, but the people who are not shouting are worried. The Romans in town can all hear this and if they can figure out what it means, they will be threatened. Yesterday was so peaceful, but there isn’t much peace today. No wonder they would tell the man on the donkey, “Rabbi, rebuke your students!” They can’t shout like this. It will upset things. When salvation comes, though, who can keep quiet? If they had, even the pavement stones would have been shouting, because salvation had at last come to Jerusalem. It was the day after Sabbath and the king had finally come! But it turned out all the understandings were wrong. Every last exception would be thwarted, resisted, broken and undone. He hadn’t come to kill Romans, but to be killed by them. He didn’t come to set up a political system to rule the nations as most powerful among them, but a supernatural kingdom to take over the world as something com- pletely different from a nation. He didn’t come to satisfy their wants, but to give them new desires! He came to give them entirely new hearts. When you don’t meet people’s expectations, they usually don’t enjoy it or respect you. So it’s no wonder that the day before the next Sabbath, the shouts were of another kind. Instead of “Hosannah!”, the same people were screaming for his blood! “Crucify! Crucify him!” As I read the story, I see in the triumphant entry into Jerusalem as a mixture of wonder and fear. The wonder that salvation is come to us. He has come! The King has come to us full of humility and gentle love, to welcome us and fill us with praise. But I feel fear when I see that human hearts are so very fickle. Should God let me down, should he fail to live up to my demands, will I also be ready to turn my back on him. But the crowds are not the star of the show. The most important person in the scene is Jesus. As he sat on the donkey, he knew that the crowd would be inconstant. When he didn’t dance to their tune, they would give up on him. Still, he resolutely rode toward his death and our salvation. Because he did, on this day after Sabbath, we gather together to sing Hosannahs and praises to the King. -Ethan Brown April 14, 2019
