Now that we have entered the third week of Easter, there might be some who may not feel the same joy as they did on Easter Sunday. I must admit that I sometimes find this true for myself. Easter Sunday and the octave are so glorious and joyful, yet after the octave there is a tendency to feel a bit of a letdown. Yet the church calls us to keep the joy going. Even though the weekday masses are a bit toned down after the celebration of the Annunciation; the joy of the season is still upon us. Holy mother church gives us 50 days to bask in the joy and the light of the risen Lord. This is why God calls us to keep the joyful spirit going that we felt on Easter Sunday. Once again the disciples have an encounter with the risen Lord. However, they do not fully recognize him. When he appears they become scared and terrified. Jesus had to quickly reassure them that it was really him. He did that by showing them his hands and his side. Jesus had to take it a step further though as he ate a piece of cooked fish in their presence. Do you know that every time we come to mass we have an encounter with our risen Lord present in the holy Eucharist? As Catholics we believe that Jesus Christ is present body, blood, soul, and divinity in the most holy Eucharist. As the disciples recognized Jesus when he ate before them, and in the breaking of the bread; we too are called to recognize the risen Lord’s presence among us. Not only are we called to recognize it at mass, but we are called to recognize it in the day to day of our lives. May the joy we experience continue to be heightened even as the liturgical celebrations may tone down a bit, so that all God’s people may see that we are joyful disciples and children of God. The risen Lord is present all around us. May we never forget that our Lord Jesus is here with us right here and right now. May the light and the love we celebrate during this Easter season continue to burn brightly in our hearts. Help us Lord to continue to proclaim our joy in the resurrection as the Apostles did in the beginning of the church. May God bless you all and continue to fill you with joy.
