The Most Holy Body & Blood of Christ June 3, 2018

“When Moses came to the people and related all the words and ordinances of the LORD, they all answered with one voice, ‘We will do everything that the LORD has told us.’” The Chosen People’s response to their leader sums up our response to our leaders and to our God. Whatever the Lord has told us, we will obey! Today we celebrate the Feast of Corpus Christi — the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ our Lord. This celebration is not supposed to be just a time in which we say “amen” to a doctrine, but one in which we recommit ourselves to living as people nourished by the Eucharist should live. In today’s first reading from the book of Exodus, Moses sent some of the young

men to offer sacrifices. He then splashed half of the blood on the altar as a sacrifice to God, and then read the “book of the covenant” to the people. This detailed their part in the covenant: how God expected them to live and to serve Him. “All that the Lord has said, we will heed and do.” Then Moses sprinkled the remaining blood — symbolizing divine life (sanctifying grace) — and them abundantly, and said, “This is the blood of the covenant that the LORD has made with you in accordance with all these words of his.” God pledged His very life and grace to them, expecting them to offer themselves a living sacrifice of praise to Him. This covenant still forms the heart and core of our religion. St. Paul speaks of this in our second reading. In his letter addressed to Christians (Catholics) from a Jewish background , he speaks of Christ as the high priest who “entered once for all into the sanctuary” to offer the sacrifice that would forgive mankind its sinfulness. He offered his own life-giving self (“but with his own blood”) to obtain eternal redemption for us all. “For if the blood of goats and bulls and the sprinkling of a heifer’s ashes can sanctify those who are defiled so that their flesh is cleansed, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from dead works to worship the living God.” In today’s gospel, we once again hear the account of the Last Supper. The Lord Jesus took bread and wine, transformed it into His own Body and Blood, and gave it sacrificial significance. He made sure that His disciples would understand that this was not simply a meal, but that it foreshadowed, would make present again whenever it was celebrated, and led into the sacrifice of Himself on the altar of the Cross. “This is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed for many.” Through these words, He reminded them of Moses splashing blood on the Israelites and called to mind its significance. Christ’s life-giving Body and Blood, given us in the Eucharist, renews our covenant with God whenever we receive it.
