Wednesday’s teaser: Bertha Brittle has a toaster with two slots that toasts one side of each piece of bread at a time, and it takes one minute to do so. If she wants to make three pieces of toast, what is the least amount of time she needs to toast them all on both sides?Answer: 3 minutes. She puts two pieces in the toaster, toasting one side of each. Then she flips one of them, takes one out, and puts the completely untoasted piece into the toaster. Finally, she takes out the toasted piece and puts the two half-toasted pieces of bread into the toaster for a minute and she’s done. Sounds like Bertha could use a new toaster for Christmas. Today’s teaser: At school Joe has three friends: Tim, George and Elaine. Two of them play football, two play tennis, and two play golf. The friend who doesn’t play golf doesn’t play tennis and the one who doesn’t play football doesn’t play golf. Which sports does each person play?

If you’re gonna plant your spuds on Good Friday, you may want to get it done in the morning as it’s likely to rain in the afternoon, and we can surely use it. Actually, planting potatoes on Good Friday is just a tradition dating to way back when. Way back when, Irish Protestants were not so fond of potatoes as they are now. In fact, way back when, they sort of had this idea that potatoes shouldn’t be eaten because they weren’t mentioned in the Bible. Irish Catholics skirted the issue by planting them on Good Friday, thereby baptizing the little spuds and making them holy. Either way, the whole Good Friday thing has nothing to do with what is best for your tators. But if you plant on any other day, every person you mention it to — including Charlie Maag — will let you know that potatoes are to be planted on Good Friday. Never mind the fact that the date varies every year. Next year’s Good Friday falls on April 3rd. In 2016, Good Friday lands on March 25th. There could still be a foot of snow on the ground!

Travels have gone well this month, and I am thankful for your prayers through this time. Many of you have casually or more seriously asked me in recent months about what my plans are for the rest of the year. In the midst of praying about and considering what God’s plans for me are after this initial two year commitment, I came across a quote by CS Lewis that has encouraged me to rest, refocus, and trust God.

“Never, in peace or war, commit your virtue or your happiness to the future. Happy work is best done by the

African grey parrot named Casey-Cola, the rock-n-rolla.) Anyhow, she figures it’s a Merlin, and looking into it, I believe she’s right (as usual). Then, would you believe it? While typing this up, we got yet another phone call. JD Somonsen, who raises, trains and hunts with falcons, called and confirmed that, yes, this is a Merlin. A male Richardson’s Merlin, to be precise. JD works with Peregrine falcons. Come fall time, he hunts upland game birds, ducks and even an occasional goose. The Peregrine is renowned for its speed, reaching over 200 mph during its characteristic hunting stoop (high speed dive), making it the fastest member of the animal kingdom. According to a National Geographic TV program, the highest measured speed of a Peregrine Falcon is an incredible 242 mph. Then there are falconers who cross-breed the Peregrine with the Merlin.

“They’re great for small game, they’ve got a high-blown motor,” says JD of super speed and agility in the air, “but they’ve got a bad beak and bad feet.” Now, get this: perhaps the most frequent cause of accidental death for the Merlins — which, according to JD, occupy old magpie nests, cracks between buildings, and have one of the most unbelievable flight patterns of all feathered friends — is a collision with man-made objects, particularly during attacks. Suppose our Merlin was going for a kill when it smacked a window? Whatever happened, it certainly took the wind out of his sails. In closing, JD is always looking for pigeons to train and feed his falcons. He’s got three breeding pairs. So if you’ve got some pigeons you’d like to be rid of (or if you’re interested in getting started in falconry) he can be reached at 509-429-3372. Interesting falcon facts: •The famous Rolls-Royce Merlin

aeroengine is named for this bird.•SpaceX named its Merlin rocket engine

after the Merlin.
