Drywall Repair

Q: I know you’ve covered this many times before, but my two sons were chasing each other and one of them crashed into his bedroom wall and left a big dent and crack in the wallboard! He’s OK, but how do I deal with such a big damaged area? -- Sara in Des Moines

A: A large area of damage can be a bit daunting, but you can probably replace that section yourself. You’ll need to buy a piece of wallboard that is a few inch-es bigger on all sides than the damaged area. You’ll also need a utility knife (box cutter), a wallboard saw, a sturdy scrap of plywood or a 1-by-1 board, wood screws, drywall screws, an electric drill, drywall tape, drywall putty (or joint compound) and a putty knife, and fine-grit sandpaper.

The wallboard caved in when your son charged into it, meaning the impact probably occurred between two

studs. You’ll find this out when you begin to remove the damaged section.

Use a pencil and straight ruler to mark a cutting line along the top, sides and, if needed, bottom of the dam-aged area. Make the area as perfect a square or rect-angle as possible, which will make the repair much easier.

Using the utility knife, slice along the lines, then fol-low with the drywall saw to cut all the way through. Be very careful sawing next to the studs, as electri-cal and plumbing lines sometimes run along these boards. Use the utility knife or angle the saw to slice drywall that’s flush against a stud. Carefully pull away the damaged wallboard. If part of the damaged area is attached to the stud, tug gently on the attached wall-board to reveal the screw, and then either remove the screw or carefully knock out the drywall from under-neath it.

Measure the new, square hole, and cut the replace-ment wallboard to those dimensions. Make sure the new drywall fits -- it doesn’t have to be perfectly snug, but should be pretty close.

Now, even if part of the new wallboard will be se-

cured to a stud, you’ll still need to add a backing to the unsecured side (or sides) of the patch, especially if it’s a really big hole. The 1-by-1 scrap wood comes into play here. Measure and cut the wood so that it extends an inch or so past the top and bottom of the hole. Place it behind the hole, located about the center of the big-gest gap between the studs, and use your electric drill to secure it with a wood screw, top and bottom.

With the backing in place, put the new wallboard up with a helper holding it steady. Use drywall or wood screws to attach the wallboard to the backing boards and to the stud (near the original screw location but not at it).

Now to cover it up: Place drywall tape along the edg-es of the new patch. Using a wide putty knife, apply drywall putty or joint compound over the tape, feather-ing the edges out to better blend with the surrounding wall. Let the compound dry for at least recommended time, then sand the compound smooth. Additional dry-ing time may be needed before you paint over the re-pair area, and I recommend priming the area first.

Understanding Oil By Craig W. Armstrong

You regularly get your car ’s oil changed, but do you ever wonder why?

Sometimes referred to as a car’s “lifeblood,” oil keeps the engine clean and lubricates its parts at the same time. Oil also transfers heat away from the combustion cycle. Sound complicated? It’s really not.

A car’s engine is full of metal surfaces that move at extremely high speeds. If these parts didn’t have oil between them, they would rub together and the friction would tear them apart. At the same time the oil is keeping the surfaces apart, it is also transferring heat away.

OK, so that makes sense, but how can something as dirty as oil keep a car’s engine clean. It’s actually pretty cool. An engine operates by combustion. In the simplest terms, a tiny explosion occurs, causing a piston to go up and down. This part of the process and many others produce many by-products. These by-products include silicon oxide and acids, which can be harmful to the engine’s parts. This is where the cleaning part comes in. Oil holds these contaminates in suspension and keeps them from

forming on the engine. You hear the term viscosity associated

with oil. Viscosity is defined as the property of a fluid that resists the force to cause the fluid to flow. Basically that means how much pressure can it withstand before it moves. When you see a container of oil marked SAE 10W40, what does it mean? First, the SAE stands for The Society of Automotive Engineers. The numbers tell you about the oil’s viscosity.

The higher the number, the more resistant to flow; the lower the number, the easier it flows. Oil marked 10W40 means that it can flow at a 10 viscosity grade when it’s cold and a 40 viscosity grade when it’s hot, with the W meaning winter.

Keep this in mind; oil gets thicker when it’s cold and thinner when it’s hot. When it’s cold (which makes oil thicker), it must remain thin enough to flow (10); when it’s hot (which makes oil thinner), it must able to remain thick enough to do its job (40). In essence, you’re getting oil that can work all year around.

With this in mind, let’s say that you live where it gets really cold in the winter and stays mild in the summer. Then an SAE 5W30 oil might be the best for your car...make sense?

As for how often to get your oil changed...the debate rages on. The safest bet is to go by what the owner’s manual says.
