Encounter Jesus, Be DisciplesSound familiar? This is our parish mission statement. Four simple words that carry a lot of meaning for us as a parishand as individuals. Today’s gospel could be the inspiration for our mission and, if we had one, it could very well be ourparish theme scripture passage.
Encounter JesusLuke tells us about two disciples who encountered the risen Jesus in different ways – his physical appearance, hiswounds, his sharing of a meal, and in his words. These are all ways in which we also encounter Jesus today. Every timewe celebrate Mass we encounter Jesus in his words and teachings through scripture and in the breaking and sharing ofhis body and blood in the bread and wine.
But how can we experience and encounter Jesus physically? I’m reminded of the story about a little boy who is terrifiedof the dark and wants his mom to stay with him as he falls asleep. The mother assures him that he will be fine becauseGod will be with him through the night. The boy responds, “But Mom, I need God with skin on!”
We all want Jesus’ loving embrace and he offers it to us through the embrace of others, physically, spiritually, andemotionally. In this bulletin every week, we highlight ministries and opportunities for an encounter with Jesus through:
• faith formation for children, youth and adults such as last week’s presentation by Fr. Patrick and our upcoming Mass in Slow Motion on May 6
• spiritual experiences like liturgy, sacraments, devotions, prayer groups, retreats• community gatherings like our Sunday café, women’s and men’s ministries, young adults, seniors, parish dinners
and picnic, movie nights• spiritual and emotional support in our wounded times like our groups for caregivers, cancer, bereavement,
families with special needs childrenThese are just to name a few. I invite you to explore what our parish has for you to experience Jesus.
Be DisciplesAt the very end of today’s gospel we hear that Jesus “opened their minds” so the disciples would understand the GoodNews and he commissioned them to be witnesses and preach to all nations that with repentance and forgiveness comesnew life and peace. My friends, Jesus is not just talking to the two disciples; he’s talking to you and me. We arecommissioned to be his disciples and witnesses to our family, friends, coworkers, neighbors and the strangers around us.Our parish provides ministries and opportunities for each of us to be disciples and be God with skin for those in need ofphysical and emotional support through such ministries as as St. Vincent De Paul, Get on the Bus, Life Centers, ManyMeals and many more.
But even if we never volunteer in a formal ministry, our discipleship in our own homes and daily lives is ministry. Todemonstrate repentance, forgiveness and peace with ourselves and others is witnessing the Good News of Jesus for thosearound us.
Encountering Jesus and Being Disciples is lifelong, ongoing, withpeaks and valleys but so worth it because eternal life with our heavenlyFather is going to be amazing!

Touching SafetyAs with any safety program, touching safety begins with educationand understanding. For example, bicycle safety starts with knowinghow a bike works and the safety risks involved, then we can learnabout protecting ourselves. The same is true for touching safety. Firstwe need to understand about boundaries in relationships, about whatis too close or too far or just right. Then we can learn aboutprotecting ourselves from touch that is out of bounds.
