PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

I am happy to report that we have no more shows until next year. That gives us plenty of time to rest up and recharge our batteries.

Doing three shows in a year's time was quite a challenge, but thanks to our many willing workers, all three shows were very successful.

Success does not just happen -- you have to make it happen. On behalf of our Society, I want to thank each and every one who helped to make it happen. We can take pride in knowing we did something no other Society (to my knowledge) has ever attempted and we did it well.

Our last show, just completed, was a huge success. In spite of a still-lagging economy in California, particularly, we have had the best show we have had in years. Our attendance was up considerably, our dealers did well, and so did we. Thanks again to all who helped.

Our next important club function will be our annual open house on Sunday, April 18th. Shop clean-up and preparation will be on Saturday, April 17th. Please come and help clean the shop and get it ready. We passed out a lot of literature about our club and our

2

shop at the show, and we do expect a good crowd of visitors and new members. The nicer our shop looks, the more enticing it will be for newcomers to join us.

We will have demonstrators, tailgaters, some equipment and material for sale, and a silent auction.

We need a host/hostess to help organize the food and some volunteers to help welcome our visitors. If you are willing to help, let me know, please.

Thank you all, Joe Hammond, President

MORE SHOP HOURS

For those of you who do not have enough shop working time, things are looking up. We are working on getting more shop supervisors to open for us. This will give us working hours seven days a week. The new times will be posted at the shop and are on the second page of the Petrograph. We have had some people agree to open for us. This will include hours during the day, as well as evening. If all goes well, we want you to use the shop as much as you need. The more you use it, the more sense it will make to open. If you have nothing to work on and want to do something, come on down. We always have saws to clean and many other things to keep you busy.

And do not forget the shop clean-up on Saturday, April 17th. And attend the open house on the 18th. We will, as always, have a good time. Hope to see you using the facilities more.

Bill Collins

SHOP HOURS

Beginning on Monday, March 15th, the shop will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Monday. Shop Supervisor will be George Mondragon.

SHOW COMMITTEE REPORT

WE DID IT! Three great shows in one year plus a few days. They said it couldn't be done. We not only did it, we did it BIG!

I would like to thank everyone who helped make the 1993 show a great success. To name names would take up the whole Petrograph. Many thanks to the entire Show Committee. Everyone did their job and did it well. They really made the show HAPPEN. To all the members who brought cakes, cookies, and pies, "thank you". They were delicious!

3

The cases were outstanding and I was very pleased to see so many new member cases, as well as the veteran member cases.

Even the weather cooperated enabling Jim Barron to open the patio for the BBQ'd hamburgers, etc.

Ron Miller is your 1994 show chairman. I hope you give him all the support you gave me. Volunteer.llilli for a committee chairperson ill a co-chairperson.

POLISHING METAL BY TUMBLING

Tumbling can be an easier way of fi nishing gold and silver rings and findings. The customary use of rotary brushes tripoli or white diamond and rouge is messy and can be a continuing expense. I weal' away one or two brushes to polish an intricate pattern in metal and these cost about 60¢ to $1.00 each. I use a vibrating tumbler as the agitating action gives faster results than the conventional barrel. Small tumblers don't. eem to give enough action or hold up as well. Mine has a capacity of three quarts. I've used it regularly for 7 years, and it is still going strong. My experience is with plastic pyramids that are embedded with abrasive. These are color coded; bl ue is coarse, green is medium, and white is fine. It is important to remove bubbles, scratches and grooves before tumbling. Otherwise, you will end up with nice, shiny bubbles, scratches and grooves. Ei ther files or rubber abrasive wheels can be used. I tumble 10-20 rings 01'

findings at a time in 1- 1 112 cups of pyramids, 4 oz. of water and a teaspoon of shaved Ivory soap. More findings can be added, but I never have more than that at one time. Of course, I start with the blue und end with the white , tumbling for 8 hours in each.

The findings should be rinsed between each tumbling. I have tumbled rather fine and delicate patterns and clasps in this manner, and there is no noti ceable weal' on the metal. The pyramids last a long time. Mine are 7 years old, and the white ones are the only ones showing weal' and will be replaced soon. A word of caution -- new pyramids of any grit are sometimes a little rough or jagged on the edges when purchased. I recommend that they first be tumbled alone with only water and soap for 6 to 8 hours to weal' away these rough areas before first use with findings.

The final bU1'l1ish and polish is done with steel shot. Mine is the old fashioned material that corrodes easi ly and must be handled carefully . I store it in an anLi -freeze solution. When tumbling r pour the anti-freeze solution back into the storage container and immediatcly pour the steel into the tumbler and covel' with ammonia water (Windex). I use it full strength, although r have heard it can be diluted half and half with water. 1 use one cup of steel shot. The importa nt thing is to not leave the shot exposed to the ail' at any time. 1 oncc answered the phone right in the middle of setting up and left the shot exposed. Five minutes later it had a grey corrosion. r had to run it for 4 hours in the white pyramids to clear this.

Shot comes in severa l shapes. I like a mixtme of 3/8 inch rods or pins, barrel and footba ll shapes. The small pins c!ln reach into delicate pattems and the others burnish the outer surfaces. I like to run these for 12 hours. When you finish this phase, pour off the ammonia solution and transfer the shot to the anti-freeze at once. Let the answering machine handle the phone.

6

There is much better steel shot now that resists corrosion. It is quite costly, but might be worth the investment if one does ~ lot of silver and gold work. Please note I say gold and SlIver. Do not use steel shot on the inexpensive "jewelers metals". These metals will tarnish and need to go through the white pyramids again.

I have not been happy with the use of crushed walnut shells or corn cob in the tumbler. These require more cleanup of the findings as they pack into the intricate patterns. Also, nothing in my experience gives a better luster than steel shot. The tumbler, polishing media and steel shot can be quite an initial investment for a casual amateur jeweler. But it is a wonderful way to work with gold and silver when one does a lot of metal work.

I know Russ Sanborn worried about money all over the place, but Dick Minor and his wife Clara managed to keep all those records straight as to who was going to attend what at our August show. I don't know how they did it.

Dick and Clarajoined M&GSCY in 1972. They were immediately put to work cooking for the shows. Clara hails from desert country, Banning, Califo1'l1ia. Dick is from Ohio. Dick and Clara met while working at Montgomery Ward in Oakland. Small world. I w rked there at one time, too . They were mal'l'ied in 1940 alld set up housekeeping in Oakland. They eventually built their own home in Hayward, and it is fi lled with "trophies" of their many trips and hobbies.

After working fo r awhil e at Montgomery Ward, Dick went to work for the Post Office. He also had a tour of duty with the Navy and later returned to the Post Office in Oakland. In 1965, he worked on the super Post Office on 7th Str et. His job was to set up the methodization of the automated machinery to handle mai l from four East Bay counties and all overseas mail. He retired in 1973.

Dick und Clara love the out of doors and went on numerous field trips. They are still traveling and recently retUJ'I1ed from a Mediterranean cru ise with the Korsteds. Dick says they really enjoyed the many field trips the club llsed to go on. He and the family were tent campers, doing all the things campers do, including trying gold panning. They eventually graduated to a trailer, but now do their camping in motels.

One of the most memorab le fi eld trips they ever took was with the Groves, Pau line Fancher and her husband, to Texas Springs neal' .Tuck Pot, Nevada. They were looking fo r limb casts . He says they were alit in the middle of

nowhere with the trailers near each other when suddenly a pickup truck arrived on the scene and an angry driver got out with two shot guns and informed them not to mess 1"'ith his claim or his wife. They took his advice and limited their activity to playing cards. In the middle of the night there was a horrendous noise. They figured out they had been invaded by a group of coyotes. Not much sleep that night. They eventually got brave and did find the limb casts they came for.

Dick also told about the early shows. These were the days before display cases when collections were simply laid out on a table. He also talked about the hard work putting on the show at the fairgrounds in Pleasanton .

. Seems it was housed in most of the buildings there. Roy LeRoy was president at the time, I believe. Dick also was assistant and show chairman in the past. And everyone knows he handled the paper work for our August show.

Dick is also a woodworker and has built two large grandfather clocks. He also does water colors and in between times he and Clara are bowlers.

Clara was a cabber. Dick's favorite lapidary work is faceting, although he has done just about everything. But today they said they restrict their club activity to getting the Petro graph put together each month. And they have been doing this for 16 years. Do you wonder why I selected them as gem of the month.

ROCK RUMBLES

At last a letter from Jetta Stedeford. She and her husband are living in Zion, Illinois after being transferred jobwise from California. She said we should all count our blessings

. and not let anything happen to M&GSCV. She finally found a gem club, but no shop facilities. She has checked .in Wisconsin looking for a more active group, but it seems the store is the same, small membership and no shop facilities. She said she's also spoiled by our shop prices on slabs. She'd really get ticked if she saw our latest from some of our old timers. She's going to insulate her garage so she can at least have some shop facilities. It's kind of cold right now.

James Bullock also dropped by the shop. He and his wife Anette were the couple who went wild over opal. He found a job and they moved to Arkansas. They have a new baby. As a thank you for all the things they learned through M&GSCV, he and his wife have donated a polished opal for the auction.

Then the other night Doc got a phone call with another rock donation. I hope to have his name later. \ I have taken on a part time job with Cal State University, Hayward, and ran out of time last month to tell you all about birth stones and some of that other information. Silly to some and most interesting to others. March had a

7

choice of birthstones. If you chose bloodstone, it is dark green with red, yellow or white spots and is a kind of quartz. The gem is for discerning logical and analytical people. The stone is supposed to have an effect on hemorrhages and inflammatory diseases.

The other gem for March is the aquamarine. The owner of this birthstone would be a go getter. This is a gem for the strong and determined. If you dream of aquamarines, you should have a happy love life.

What should you say about April, except diamond is the birthstone.

Everyone worked so hard at the show. No pet rats asked to get in this time. The snack bar under Roy LeRoy even served pizza this year. If you have gone to many gem shows, you really appreciate our food. I think they serve cardboard and charge you gourmet prices. And it isn't the host club's fault. The caterer comes with the building. Amy DeVoe and Joe Strelick and crew really delivered. Even general chair, Arnold Barron, stuck his nose in occasionally. Our skirting sisters had that crew going like mad. After the August show, this one seemed to be a snap. Horace is quite an organizer. (He's our procurer, I mean purchasing agent.) And as usual, Vern McCollough was everywhere. He had a couple of new helpers this year. Darn, I missed a bunch of the names.

John Gullok says the skirt wrapper uppers beat the record for getting the job done in the least time this year. We had a terrific young helper whose name I need to get. Great to see that Bill Walsh was able to make it to the show. We had hoped Judge Eweing could make it. He is in a resthome and would love to get cards.

The other night Kim Newel was working on the ring she was donating for the auction. Seems she was being teased unmercifully because she can drive a big rig truck with all its gears, but couldn't handle the stick shift in her friend's car.

Pat Rigor has been mentioned several times in the Lapidary Journal since the article about her appeared in the Lapidary Journal. They missed talking about her in the last issue. Stardom is so fleeting.

Did you see the case put in the show by the Miller kids? With our skirting assistant and the Miller kids and a couple other of our children, maybe we have someone to manage the shows in 10 years. It's nice to know.

Seventeen new members paid their dues to join us at the show. So many others took applications that we ran out. We need each and everyone of them. Please make them welcome.

George Mondragon will be opening the shop on Monday mornings.

George and Leona Valha have recently returned from several weeks in New Zealand. They attended a wedding while there.
