The SCLAA recently announced that the format, venue and date have been set for the 50th Anniversary Australian Supply Chain and Logistics

(ASCL) Awards. According to the ASCL Awards Chairman, Vince Aisthorpe, the 2010 awards evening wil l return to its traditional black tie format as widely requested by industry participants. This befits the ASCLA’s 50 year history as the premier SCL industry Awards in Australia. “Unfortunately last year’s function was severely restricted by the Global Financial Crisis and we are pleased to advise that the 2010 event will be held at the Crystal Palace, Luna Park, Sydney on Thursday the 28th of October,”

“The SCLAA is very pleased that industry partners are overwhelmingly supporting the return to our traditional style of awards evening with a sit-down black tie dinner, fantastic entertainment and a wonderful evening that befits the achievements of Award finalists and winners,” “We have had some memorable awards evenings around the country in this format and we look forward to running a spectacular event at Luna Park for the industry,” Mr Aisthorpe said. “The ASCL Awards are the longest running national awards program in the industry and the SCLAA is extremely proud of its fifty year history. They are designed to recognise high achievement by individuals and companies in this diverse industry and to acknowledge the

innovative projects that are being carried out every day in all parts of Australia. The program allows nomination of suppliers, business partners, companies or people who work for them and publicly recognises their efforts,” “The ASCL Awards are the most recognised and esteemed awards for a company to be awarded in the Supply Chain, Logistics and Transport industries and we look forward to the 2010 event. A not-to-be-missed event we hope you mark in your calendar.” he said. Traditional and new sponsors, award nominees and interested event attendees are invited to contact the ASCL Award organisers via [email protected]

WA kicked off 2010 with a visit to IFAP’s five acre site at Northlake. The facility provides hands on training experiences incorporating the Fire Safety & Emergency Response Training Centre. IFAP is an independent, not-for-profit, member-based organisation that has been providing leading safety and risk management solutions to the workplace for over 35 years. IFAP trains over 18,000 people a year and offers a wide range of training and consulting services throughout its five training centres and in-company

anywhere in Australia and even overseas. IFAP specialises in the following areas: Occupational Safety and Health, Workers’ Compensation and Injury Management, Construction and Equipment Skills, Sea Survival and Emergency Response, Fire Safety. Our thanks go to Martin Ralph, Ross Pratt and Dustin London for setting up and hosting this most interesting and informative visit. We plan to also visit the IFAP Fremantle Offshore & Maritime Training Centre later in 2010.

TWO VISITS TO WA NEWSPAPERS

Many of us face challenges with management of products with finite shelf life whether it be food, chemicals or fashion items. However shelf life, and the requirement to disperse product to consumers, doesn’t get

more challenging than in the newspaper industry. Nobody is interested in yesterday’s news! We had two separate visits to WA newspapers, given maximum group numbers, and we could have comfortably had another two such was the demand and interest. Anthony Alborn, Advertising Sales Trainer and Business Development Strategist at the West Australian provided an enthusiastic, stimulating and informative tour of the production site.

For the technically and statistically minded a few facts about the Herdsman Lake newspaper production plant:• Operations commenced August 2007.• 1,000 tonnes of newsprint and 200 tonnes of special grade/

coated paper is used per week.• 90% of newsprint comes from Tasmania and 100 tonnes is

100% recycled coming form Indonesia.• A 4-5 tonnes tree can produce approximately 3,000 copies

of the West Australian.• On site newsprint inventory is 10,000 tonnes and valued at

$10 million.• 12 tonnes of black ink is used weekly with on site

stockholding of 60 tonnes.• Electricity bill is $152k per month.• The building is 130m long, 31 metres wide and 21 metres

high and contains 3,125 tonnes of printing equipment. • Construction cost was $30m.• The Swiss Ferag system is the most advanced in Australia

and cost $46m. Our thanks to Anthony Alborn for the significant effort he put into making both visits a great success. Feedback from attendees was extremely positive with a couple of Members saying it was the best site visit they had been to.

A t our first breakfast event for 2010 a good turnout of Members and friends of the association gained the benefit of Dematic’s experience and expertise in voice picking technology. As well as discussion on the business case benefits of implementing this

technology, a live demonstration of different types of equipment was provided. There were also some insights into leading edge solutions which are currently in development including the voice command pick vehicles which can further improve warehouse productivity. A warehouse operative does not need to physically control a rider pallet type truck as it accompanies them semi automatically along a warehouse pick path. Our thanks to Supply Chain Services Australia who sponsored the breakfast, as well as David Penny and Rizan Mawzoon from Dematic. We would encourage other member organisations to sponsor similar events. As well as providing excellent marketing profile for your brand, this helps in keeping event costs down for attendees. If you are interested please make contact with any of the committee via [email protected]
