Easter ReflectionsWe are at last emerging from what has been a very long, dark winter.The spring flowers are all around us and give cause to hope that warmerdays are ahead. At the end of this month we have the royal wedding tolook forward to and celebrate: a real romance to warm our hearts.Thoughts like these keep us going in darker days.Christians need signs of hope to keep them going on the journey of lifewith God. The church calendar has annual reminders of all the importantaspects of the faith and this month sees the celebration of a number of thekey ones. Palm Sunday, this year on 17 April, marks the beginning ofHoly Week and recalls the day when Jesus entered Jerusalem astride ahumble donkey to a rapturous welcome from the crowds. In church weoften sing the hymn: Ride on! ride on in majesty! Hark! all the tribes hosanna cry; O Saviourmeek, pursue thy road with palms and scattered garments stro w e d .The week starts with such a welcome but, as the last verse of the hymnsuggests, soon turns to rejection:Ride on! ride on in majesty! In lowly pomp ride on to die; bow thy meekhead to mortal pain, then take, O God, thy power, and re i g n .On the Thursday of Holy Week, Maundy T h u r s d a y, we recall Jesus’final meal with his disciples before his betrayal, arrest and mock trial. A tthis meal Jesus gave us the pattern for remembering him, particularly inhis death. This has become the central service of the Christian Church,celebrated from the earliest days to this, across the world in churches,hospitals, homes and many other places. Different titles are attached tothis service – the Eucharist, the Mass, the Lord’s Supper, HolyCommunion, but they all look back to that last supper when Jesus tookbread and wine at the meal and gave them fresh meaning by telling us to‘do this in remembrance of me’.A few years ago I remember that my local supermarket chain hit theheadlines by selling hot cross buns without the cross on them. I can’tquite recall what the reasoning was but I suspect they were trying to bePC and avoid causing offence to those not sympathetic to the Christianreligion. Now I have no trouble with unmarked buns (in fact quite theopposite!) but I can’t quite get my mind around hot cross buns without

the cross. I think that I’m on safe ground when I say that hot cross bunswithout the cross simply cease to be hot cross buns. Simple. In the sameway the Christian faith without the cross just ceases to be the Christianfaith. And so the events of Good Friday must be recalled and in aproper way, celebrated. We believe that in the crucifixion of Jesus Christ,God dealt with all the consequences of human sin and made possible arestored relationship with himself. Indeed more than this, the cross willrestore the whole of God’s creation marred by human sin. For this reasonGood Friday is rightly called ‘good’ and we have two opportunities in theparish this year to reflect on the events: in the morning a Good FridayG e t - Together for children and carers; in the afternoon a three hourmeditative service with music and pictures which people can join in andleave at any point.Critics of Christianity sometimes say that it is a crutch for those whoc a n ’t face the bald, bad realities of life. They say that it’s wishfulthinking or even sentimental rubbish. I fear that it is the Church’s ownfault that they think like this. We have not preached the whole gospels t o r y. We have been too eager to jump from Palm Sunday to Easter Dayand we miss the cross in between. There is no darkness blacker than thatof Calvary. ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’ plumbs thedepths of human despair and is certainly not sentimental rubbish. But thank God the gospel story does not end with Jesus’ death on thecross. From out of the darkness of Good Friday dawns the light of EasterD a y. On the day of Christ’s resurrection God acted in a very dramaticand public way. By the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, Godhas declared that Jesus is who he said he was, the Son of God, theSaviour of the world. And so on E a s t e r S u n d a y we will declare, withChristians across the world: ‘Christ is risen. He is risen indeed. A l l e l u i a ! ’

Oh No! Not Sprouts AgainQ: I grow my own vegetables –potatoes, carrots, cabbage, runnerbeans, onions, tomatoes and lettuceetc. – but would like to grow somemore unusual things. Is this diff i c u l t ?A: What is unusual to one person isoften familiar to another but manypeople, particularly when starting outgrowing vegetables, stick with the sortof vegetables you describe. Most ofthe veg I am going to talk about hereare not unusual as in ‘I haven’t seenthat before’ but are less often grown ingardens or allotments for one or moreof the following reasons: they ared i fficult to grow, they requireprotection or conditions that we can’talways provide (like sunshine!), theytake up a lot of space, or it is diff i c u l tto know what to do with them when itcomes to cooking. Some of them arereferred to as ‘Gourmet’ v e g e t a b l e s ,but don’t let that put you off .There are many unusual varieties offairly common vegetables, sometimesoffering only novelty. Having oncetried Beetroot ‘Chioggia’ – prettilystriped with concentric rings of redand white in the photographs – Ifound that cooked it had anunpleasant appearance of raw fleshand no special flavour. I amgenerally wary of too novel a variety,but give them a go if you fancyfeathered sprouts.Some of the best vegetables to groware those that you can simply harvest,cook and enjoy almost as they are

such as Mangetout Peas, with theirparticular flavour enhanced by thefreshness - something you will notfind in supermarket products.Mangetout (literally ‘eat all’ inFrench) and Snap Peas are grownmuch as ordinary peas, but have twoadvantages; they taste sweeter andoffer better yields as you eat theentire pea, pod and all. I find snappeas more forgiving than the flat-podded Mangetout; de-stringed theycan even be eaten with nearly full-sized peas. And, if you let either gotoo far, you can always shell out thepeas as normal.

Florence Fennel is a plant that needsvery regular and reliable watering andno cold spells, to ensure that it does notbolt. I have never been able to producegood bulbs with the lovely aniseedflavour that goes so well with fish;you can always use the feathery leavesfor flavouring or garnish instead.

If you are keen on decorative veg youcould try Chard ‘Bright Lights’,

which is an easily grown spinach-likeplant, with stems in shades of ruby,orange, yellow, magenta, pale pinkand white. They don’t taste quite sorefined as Swiss Chard, and are notquite as hardy, but I’ll forgive themfor the pleasure of a mixed bed ofthese jewel colours with green orpurplish leaves.Having only previously raisedPeppers and Aubergines in potsoutside, growing them in a home-made ‘poly-tunnel’ at the allotmentwas a revelation. They grew reallywell, with many of those peppers stillgreen at the end of the seasonripening to red after picking. Apartfrom watering and keeping the airmoist with a bucket of water theywere no trouble at all, much easierthan tomatoes if you ignore having toconstruct the protection, which isreally essential for good crops.

I have had variable results withWinter Squash (as opposed to thecourgette-like summer squash) as itneeds a sunny, open site and a goodfour month stint of warm weather to

Butternut Squashbbbreally do well. You also need a lot ofspace and to be prepared for 6 fruitsper plant one year and none the next.When they grow well and are allowedto ripen properly, some varieties keepfor up to 6 months (e.g. Butternut andCrown Prince). I find it better to growthe smaller varieties, such as Butternut,Acorn and Sweet Dumpling as I’mnever really prepared for dealing with5kg of squash flesh in one go. T h esmaller squash, with the exception ofbutternut, do not however tend to keepfor so long. You should have time to grow these ifyou get going soon. Solid RemixYouth Celebration

Where do you go on a Friday night inFebruary for a beach party, bouncycastles, rapping and African drumming?Chelmsford cathedral, of course, for theyouth celebration REMIX.Some of the youth group from this

parish had a very exciting nightworshipping in a very FUN way with300 plus other teenagers in thecathedral. One of the activities theytook part in was “LYRICIST

LOUNGE” where they learnt how to write a rap. The following rap,written by the group, helps to explain the evening a little more.....(Imagine a heavy dance, microphone and lights and start rapping......)

Chrishall Village Market

Chrishall’s ten markets a year have now turned into four. Curiously this is notdue to a lack of organisers and producers; there are insufficient customers on aregular basis. Through the generosity of producers, who give 10% of their takings to thedonations fund, the market has, since it’s inception in 2002, given almost£8,000 to village organisations and charities further afield.This is a huge achievement for a small organisation which also aims to providea venue for local people to enjoy a cuppa and bacon roll along with a bit ofshopping and a meet-up with villagers.The market welcomes table-top stalls run by those who have produce andcrafts to sell. Villagers voluntarily runmost of the produce stalls - home-baking, preserves, eggs, bread, plants, fruitand veg. - and they are happy to sell your produce for you. Your takings (less15%, for market expenses and donations fund) will be delivered to you afterthe market. Icknield Way Choir Exciting project!

This year marks the 400th anniversary of the publication of the King Jamesversion of the bible (KJV). We are proposing to mark this anniversary witha celebration, which will be centred around Handel’s Messiah which veryl a rgely used passages from the KJV as texts for this great oratorio. T h i scelebration will take place at Holy Trinity Church, Chrishall on the eveningof Saturday, 9 July.In order to prepare for this there will be a schedule of rehearsals over aperiod of ten weeks, starting on Saturday 16 April. An important part ofthis preparation will be a ‘singing day’ intended to take place on Saturday14 May. This will be led by Tim Crosley, who directs the EC4 choir andorchestra in London.If you would like to join us for this project, it will involve a commitment tojoin the majority of the rehearsals and especially the singing day. Chance (Or Was It?)And Sculpture

“I can see you living abroad. I see you as a painter...no...a sculptor. Yes,you will be a sculptor and live abroad!” I had been standing outside myuniversity in Bordeaux, and, on a whim, had offered my hand to read toa gypsy who had been pestering me. Had she said I would have endedup as a tight-rope dancer, I would have dismissed her in the same way.That was 50 years ago. I have been indeed living abroad for more than40 years, and am a sculptor. All that by chance, really. When settlingin East Anglia, the transparent light and dramatic skies prompted me totake up painting again, an old favourite from school days. By chance, Ifound a good - and mad- drawing teacher who convinced me to modelthe human body in clay “to understand how it works”. It was arevelation: the feeling of clay in my hands, the joy of creating a shape,seeing it evolve and come alive, was a turning point. I could not sleepfor days for sheer excitement. By chance again, after months andmonths of attempting to find a proper sculpture teacher, I met an oldfriend who mentioned that he had heard of a professional sculptoropening her studio for classes in a nearby village. It was in 1989.

Now, more than 20 years later, Icannot imagine life without sculpting.Faces, hands, bodies, plants, leaves,seeds, all for me is bursting with a lifethat I want to capture and translate intoa sculpture. It has required stubborndetermination, constant hard work,resilience in the face of repeated set-backs, an absolute belief in what Iam doing, and, undoubtedly, a degree of ruthlessness to reach my goals.
