Safehouse 1911 Taylor Avenue Racine, WI 53403 262.634.4571 Sandra wants a piece about being a foster family for crit- ters, so I thought I’d offer up my perspective and experi- ence. As you know, HOPE has no real kennel facility and long term cages for cats is just not acceptable. That means our intakes are limited to “reasonable” numbers of cats and only as many dogs as we have foster families. Every day we are bombarded with pleas for rescue from numerous shelter facilities and the office staff has to pick and choose which animals we actually have room for. This can really be heartbreaking as 99.999% of those pleas go straight to e-mail trash. We can squeeze in a couple cats, even at full capacity, but if we don’t have available fosters we can’t intake the dogs. Now don’t get me wrong, even if we had 500 fosters, we still couldn’t handle all the requests, but I am always looking for “just one more animal to save”. Unfortunately I hear all too often; “I can’t foster because it would hurt too much to give them up”. . . yep. . . it does hurt; but we’re in this business of rescue because animals are dying for lack of homes, not because it’s all fun and games. I don’t want to diminish the good times with foster critters as there are a lot of silly dogs and cats who will warm your heart and cause you to laugh at their antics. Trust me I have stories! There are all manner of big, little, young, old, male and female dogs that need your help and guidance. Once we know the dynamics of your particular family, we can easi- ly find the critter that would fit best. I will warn you that you may indeed fall in love with your foster critter and never want to give him/her up. That’s okay it’s happened to me. . . I forget how many times. I’m 50 plus years old so you do the math! Yet I’ve fostered and placed way more animals than I’ve kept. Some of that is just simple logistics. If I keep them all, there’s no room to help any others. Of course I believe that no better home exists than my own, but that’s my selfish pride coming through not a real desire to help animals. I’m not sure exactly how the saying goes, but it’s something like, “nothing good ever comes easy”. Well, fostering ani- mals can certainly be difficult. Sometimes it’s their health that makes you fret. Non-stop diarrhea, sores that won’t heal, pain that requires constant medication. Most times it’s their behavior that drives you a little bonkers as most have either been mishandled or they’ve been taught no manners at all. You can be assured of pee where you real- ly don’t want it; chewed up TV remotes, holes dug in your yard and possibly a few sleepless nights from barking. Yet after a while you see them change, they’re calmer, they respond to commands, their tail wags more and no poop in the house for more than 5 days! It’s a miracle! It’s actual- ly that for the first time in probably their entire lives, they’re in a stable environment. . . well. . . as stable as a crazy dog rescuer can possibly be. Their personality blos- soms and they’ve become a joy to have around. . . just in time to rehome them. . . sigh. Every time I hand the leash over to the adoptive family my heart aches. I wish I could tell them that they are going somewhere where they will be loved forever, and it’s not that I don’t want them. I can’t let them see me cry because that would upset them. They wouldn’t understand. I’ve got to suck it up and put on my happy face. The pain fades with time and I remind myself, it’s not all about me. Time passes and in a while, I’m ready to do it all over again. This is really hard work, and often I cry but I know I’m making a difference in the lives of unwanted, abandoned, abused and misunderstood animals. Seeing their lives change for the better is one of the most rewarding things I have ever experienced. My life is fuller because of them and when I go to my grave, I will be able to say I added something positive to this world. So that’s the straight poop on fostering. The mostly good, the little bit of bad and an occasional ugly. If the ugly becomes too difficult, you just have to let us know and we’ll always take the dog back. During their time with you we will supply you with all food, medications, leash- es, crates or whatever you need. You will provide shelter; guidance, correction, love and anything that animal will need to become a well-adjusted four-legged family mem- ber. They don’t have much of a chance coming out of a shelter cage, straight into a new home without some basic manners. Your input will give them a better chance of find- ing a forever home not just another stop along the way. Call me! April 2012

Ways to Help H.O.P.E. …

www.hopesafehouse.org Page 2

It’s easy to help HOPE by doing what you do every-day - search and shop the Internet.

Go to www.goodsearch.com and enter HOPE Safe-house as your designated charity. Every time you search the Internet through the GoodSearch web-site, HOPE will receive a penny. GoodSearch is powered by Yahoo so you will get the same great results on all your searches.

You can also help HOPE receive money by shop-ping online. Go to www.goodsearch.com and locate the store you would like to shop and if you have HOPE as your charity we will receive a percentage of your sales. Don’t forget to check the coupons of your favorite stores that are listed on GoodSearch. HOPE can receive money from airline ticket purchases to pharmacy purchases to clothes purchases to pet supply purchases. Hun-dreds of stores you shop on the web everyday are on GoodSearch.

It really is easy to donate to HOPE just by shop-ping and searching the Internet. If you are con-cerned you might forget to go to the GoodSearch website, they have a toolbar you can download so every search will be counted.

Donate:Money: become a member, donate money, pay a vet bill,

donate in memory of people or pets, donate in honor of people or pets

(Every penny helps an animal!)Time: volunteer at the office, at one of our fundraising

events, at one of our meet & greets throughout the community

(Even an hour a month or year helps!)Purchase HOPE merchandiseJoin us at one of our fundraisers:

HOPE Raffle tickets (drawing held first Saturday in June). Purchase tickets and/or help sell tickets for our raffle.

Cause for Paws (held the first Saturday in October). Come to the event and bid on items, volunteer for

the event, join the committee and help make the evening a big success.

(Check our website calendar or newsletter for upcoming events)

When at the vet with your animal, pay a little extra towards HOPE’s bill

(at Northshore Animal Hospital or CrossRoads)

Use your computer to help by using Good Search every time you search on the internet or make a purchase on line.

(See below or our website for more information.)

Adopt a shelter animal Foster a HOPE dog or cat

One important way to help HOPE is word of mouth. If you like our organization, tell people!

Thank you to everyone who donated items on our wish list-your giving was astounding! Because of your generosity, we have all thesupplies we need for this year and next! We are lucky to have such caring and generous supporters. Thank you!

There are still a number of ways to help HOPE:

There is a website available that will help locate pet friendly apartments.

Katie Reardon created www.myapartmentmap.com/pet_friendly/to help find pet friendly apartments easily.

Christie Graham from Homestead Realty, Inc. will donate3% of her commission to the animal shelter of your

choice, if she is your realtor. You can contact Christie byphone at 262-344-1752, by email at

[email protected] or visit her website atwww.christiegraham.com.

Hi Lynn,

We are so happy with our new familymembers. We have renamed though,Vamp now “Emma” and Virgo is now“Otis”. We thought the new names fittheir personalities much better. Emmagives us hugs on a daily basis now andthey both snuggle on our laps. They areso sweet and well behaved. Of course, they rule our hearts.

We couldn’t be happier and everyonewho meets them thinks they’re adorable. They’re love and companionship havemade our holidays so much more spe-cial.

Thank you for what you do Lynn and allthe volunteers. I think Emma and Otisare very happy with their new digs andthe love of a new permanent family. They send their hugs as do we.
