Recovery Report from the Town of Owego
Hickories Park Update Hickories Park, a community
staple in the Town of Owego for
years, has taken on a great deal of
damage stemming from flooding due
to its location on the Susquehanna
River.
Some of the ongoing projects at
Hickories Park include:
• Removal of Flood Debris;
• Upgrade to camping facilities;
• Review and revise a comprehen-
sive plan of the park. This plan will
evaluate and make recommendations
to repair and/or replace the following
park items as needed:
• Electrical services throughout
park;
• Playground equipment;
• Picnic tables and restrooms.
A great deal of the work being
done at Hickories Park will help to
prevent further damages from future
floods.
By making updates, planning, and
using “lessons learned" from previ-
ous incidents, the Town of Owego
and Hickories Park will be better
prepared for flooding, and have the
ability to re-open to the public more
swiftly than in the past.
The Town of Owego Board rec-
ognizes that re-opening Hickories
Park in a timely manner is of great
importance to the Town. We must
ensure that the park is safe for all
residents before it is re-opened for
public use.
Tioga School Wins National Award Achieves Gold of Distinction Level in HealthierUS School Challenge
John Magnarelli, USDA’s top region-
al school lunch official, presented Tioga
Elementary School in Tioga Center with
one of the nation’s highest school nutri-
tion awards, from the US Department of
Agriculture.
Magnarelli applauded Tioga School
students, food service staff and school
officials for earning the State’s first
Gold of Distinction award in USDA's
HealthierUS School Challenge. Only
about 2 percent of 101,000 schools in
the nation have achieved HealthierUS
status at the Bronze, Silver, Gold or
Gold of Distinction levels.
"Through our HealthierUS School
Challenge, USDA recognizes schools
that have accepted the challenge of re-
vamping school food with meals that
look good, taste good and are good for
you,” said Magnarelli. “These schools
have moved away from processed foods
to meals that offer fresh fruits and vege-
tables, whole grains and reduced levels
of fat, salt and sugar.”
“The HealthierUS School Challenge
Award represents long term support
throughout our school community and
commitment to doing the best possible
job when it comes to promoting good
health for our kids,” said Nancy Eck-
strom, R.D., Director of Food Services
for Tioga Central School District.
“Collaboration with other school dis-
tricts through our local Rock on Café
program has allowed schools to share
resources and optimize results. What is
happening here at Tioga is mirrored at
many schools in our area.”
Through the Healthy, Hunger-Free
Kids Act championed by the First Lady
and signed by President Obama, USDA
is making the first major changes in
school meals in 15 years, which will
help raise a healthier generation of chil-
dren.
The new standards align school
meals with the latest nutrition science
and the real world circumstances of
America’s schools. These responsible
reforms do what’s right for children’s
health in a way that’s achievable in
schools across the Nation. Schools can
use the HealthierUS School Challenge
as a means of meeting the new reforms
in school meal programs. Learn more at

Troop 36 Has Successful Food Drive
Boy Scout Troop 36 had a very suc-
cessful Food Drive and Pork Sand-
wich Luncheon on Saturday, March
17. The troop would like to thank the
community of Nichols and Tioga
Center for making both events such
a success. The troop gathered over
100 lbs of can goods for the Louns-
berry food pantry and the dinner was
a sell out. The next troop fundraiser
will be a rummage sale on Saturday,
June 2, at the Creamery Building in
Nichols, and they are currently tak-
ing donations. If you have clean,
gently used items you would like to
donate, contact Audra Ellis 699-

Cathy Lanning 687-2523.
The Nichols Elementary gymnasium
was filled with laughter last month for
the three performances of the Tioga Act-
ing Guild (TAG) production, “Drinking
Habits”.
Friday and Saturday nights were sold
out crowds, and Sunday afternoon was
also very well attended. The audience
was treated to a sit down dinner, fol-
lowed by the show. A delicious dessert
was served during intermission. All in
all, it was a great success and everyone
had a great time. It was more than a
fundraiser for the Community Care Net-
work of Nichols (CCNN). Director,
Robin Benesh, also a board member of
CCNN, sees the TAG performances as a
way to bring live theater to the commu-
nity at a nominal price. “With everyone
doing their part, volunteers, sponsors,
etc, we can keep these events at a low
cost so everyone can break away from
their daily routines, even for only a cou-
ple of hours, to laugh or be taken on a
journey in a character’s life.” People
have been enjoying the TAG perfor-
mances so much they are willing to
make the trip to see a show even if it
means traveling a bit. They had audience
members from as far away as Corning,
Binghamton, Addison, Horseheads, and
even Lewisburg, Pa.

The Junior Varsity girls’ basketball
team from Our Lady of Good Counsel
Church in Endicott recently held a
Barnes and Noble fundraiser for
Owego’s St. Patrick School. Coach
Maureen Markanthony and her players
presented to St. Patrick School Librarian
Linda Williams a gift card for $1,606.08
to use at Barnes and Noble.
St. Patrick School held classes only
one day in September 2011 when flood-
waters filled the basement, destroying all
storage rooms, utilities, and the pre-
school classroom. Students and staff
relocated to the former Our Lady of
Good Counsel School in Endicott from
mid-September through mid-November
while repairs were made. Pre-school
students relocated to the McAuley Cen-
ter, located behind the school.
Due to the flooding, St. Patrick
School was unable to hold its annual Fall
Scholastic Book Fair, which traditionally
raises funds for the school library. The
funds raised by the basketball players of
Our Lady of Good Counsel will fill the
huge void created by the flood event.
Pictured, left to right: St. Patrick School Librarian Linda Williams, the members of Our Lady of Good Counsel JV girls’ basketball team, and Coach Maureen Markanthony.
Luck o' the Irish at Tioga Downs
The luck of the Irish struck Tioga
Downs Casino in Nichols last month
during the St Patrick’s Day celebration,
as $106,923.36 was paid out in jackpot
winnings throughout the day.
Three of the largest jackpots during
St. Patrick’s Day included a guest from
Vestal hitting a jackpot on a 1 cent Quick
Hit Platinum machine for $61,311.75.
No longer than a half hour later, Kris
Ann Kvassay of Johnson City found the
pot of gold on St. Patrick’s Day winning
$25,110.20 on the Golden Wheels 1 cent
machine. Then to round out the night of
winning, a guest took down $10,800 on a
$5.00 Triple Lucky 7’s machine.

Marklove, one of New
York's most renowned
organ builders, and is an
outstanding example of
mid-nineteenth century
organ design.

Dan Lamb Announces Campaign for Newly Created 22nd Congressional District
Dan Lamb, a longtime senior
aide to Congressman Maurice Hin-
chey, announced he is beginning to
circulate petitions to run for New
York’s new 22nd Congressional Dis-
trict. The announcement comes as dis-
trict lines have been finalized, and sets
up a challenge to Republican Congress-
man Richard Hanna in a new district that
tilts slightly more Democratic than the
old 24th district that Hanna lost in 2008,
but won in 2010. Lamb will hold an offi-
cial campaign kickoff event in mid-
April.
Lamb runs Hinchey’s Binghamton
District Office, advising the Congress-
man on key issues, including job crea-
tion, economic growth, education, infra-
structure development, flood recovery
and hydraulic fracturing. The new 22nd
congressional district contains a signifi-
cant portion of Hinchey’s former district
where Lamb has worked for the last 14
years.
“I’m running for Congress to help
restore the American Dream that has
unfortunately fallen out of reach for far
too many middle class New Yorkers in
recent years. Our country’s values and
principles have been derailed by a radi-
cal, politicized agenda in Washington
that Richard Hanna has fully embraced,
and it’s time to help get our country
back on track,” Lamb said. “Upstate
New York has real challenges that need
to be addressed. Our infrastructure is
crumbling, our economy is lagging, our
schools are getting more and more
crowded, our debt is growing, and all
Richard Hanna and the Republican lead-
ers in Congress offer are obstruction and
political games. The best way to reduce
the debt is to put people back to work.
The Richard Hanna approach of cutting
taxes for the wealthiest one percent and
slashing vital programs, such as Medi-
care and education, is a recipe for fail-
ure. It’s wrong for upstate New York
and it’s wrong for the country. I’m run-
ning for Congress to turn this situation
around.”
Lamb holds a Master’s degree in Public
Administration from the Maxwell Grad-
uate School of Public Affairs at Syra-
cuse University and a Bachelor of Sci-
ence degree from Ithaca College. He is
also an active board member for several
community groups and nonprofits.
