THE EASTER LAUGH

Foremost among our responses to the event of Easter are praise, thanksgiving, and joy.

And that's as it should be. At the same time, also consider this response: laughter. Yes,

laughter! This theme in Easter comes from the notion that in the resurrection a divine trick

has been played on the devil. Satan believed that on the cross Jesus had died once and for

all—that the forces of evil had prevailed over the forces of good. Yet God fooled the devil

by raising Jesus from the dead. This theme is highlighted in Holy Humor, a book in which

Cal and Rose Samra have compiled a number of quotations and stories about the

relationship between faith and humor. Here is one of them from Chapter Four, which is

titled “The Easter Laugh and Holy Humor Month.”

Church historians indicate that there is considerable evidence that during the early

centuries of Christianity, Easter celebrations went on for days and even weeks. But in

modern times, these celebrations have faded away....Occasionally, one will come across a

Greek Orthodox or Slavic or Byzantine Catholic church that still observes the old-country

customs...Rev. George Mihalke, pastor of Holy Trinity Byzantine Catholic Church,

Sykesville, PA, wrote: “In our parish we have managed to maintain the joy of our

ancestors during the Easter celebration. On Bright Monday and Tuesday [that is, the first

two days after Easter] we chase each other around after the services, drenching and being

drenched with water. It's quite a sight—the women pursuing their pastor (in his cassock)

down the street and around the grounds, drenching him with water. I'm sure the neighbors

think us quite mad!”

May each one of you experience an Easter filled both with praise and laughter!

In conjunction with the 2012-2013 Annual Commitment, a sermon series will be given that

will focus on several values that we believe in and practice as Christians. Concentrating on

financial stewardship, this series will be loosely based on four sermons produced by

Norman E. Lucas. A retired Lutheran pastor, Lucas served among other congregations at

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Tampa, FL.

KINDRED SISTERS NEWS

Kindred Sisters will assemble Lutheran World Relief (LWR) Personal Care Kits on

Tuesday, April 3, 10:30 am in Koinonia Café. When natural disaster strikes or political

conflict flares, families often have little chance to gather their belongings before fleeing the

danger. Dirty from traveling to a refugee camp or safety, people use these simple items in

the Kit wash away dirt and sweat. Imagine feeling the softness of a towel, smelling a fresh

scent of soap, and knowing someone cares for you! We hope to meet our challenge to

LOLLC to do 150 Kits. Come join us, all ladies and friends of LOLLC are

welcome. Deanna Brown will host lunch for us. Questions: Marge Kretschmar

258-2988 and/or Glenace Klinker 671-3690

Kindred Sisters meeting in March explored the thrills of "Garage Sales" led by the

champion “Garage Saler” Rea Wiruscheske. She brought some of her 150+ small

pitchers collected over the years to share with each of us. “Repurposed” items

brought by others consisted of jewelry, clothes, quilts, and purses. Got us all

thinking about what we have in our homes!

LWR Ingathering, Wednesday, April 11 between 8 am – 4 pm in Jackson Auditorium

parking lot at Texas Lutheran University, Sequin. Volunteer opportunity for men and

women: Experience collecting/loading/stacking the various LWR QUILTS and KITS from

Texas churches for shipment to Maryland. Also need helpers to do clerical as well as

re-taping and repacking boxes. Call 830-997-7937 We will take our Personal Care Kit

boxes to Abiding Love Church, Austin, on Tuesday morning, April 10, 2012.

“WHAT IS GOD CALLING ME TO DO?”

The Stewardship Committee is pleased to announce the 2012 Annual Commitment (formerly

the Annual Pledge Drive). The Annual Commitment is the time to make your financial

commitment to God’s Kingdom from July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013. The Annual

Commitment drive will start on April 15 and conclude on May 6. The goal of the Stewardship

Committee is to have 100% of the members turn in a commitment card by May 6.

All members will be receiving a commitment card in the mail and you can turn your card in

any time during the Annual Commitment drive. Please place it in the offering plate or you

may mail it to the church office. We will be celebrating our Commitments on May 6th with

a potluck lunch immediately following the late service. Thanks be to God!

STEPHEN MINISTRY

The program was developed by a Lutheran Minister who is

also a Ph.D., Clinical Psychologist. The program is designed

to equip the trained people with knowledge and proven

techniques to provide effective counseling and references to

available community resources.

The key feature of Stephen Ministry is COMPLETE

CONFIDENTIALITY. That is, NOTHING that is said to,

or discussed with, the Stephen Minister IS EVER

REPEATED !!! Only your Pastor and the Stephen Leader

will know that you have a Stephen Minister and they also are

sworn to the same confidentiality.

LIBRARY NOTES - April 2012

by: Donna Estes

A quote by: MOTHER TERESA

If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior

motives; be kind anyway.

If you are successful, you will win some false friends and true

enemies; succeed anyway.

If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you;

be honest and frank anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous;

be happy anyway.

The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow;

do good anyway…

You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God;

it was never between you and them anyway.

THRIVENT / HABITAT FOR HUMANITY BUILD

Come join us as we participate in the Thrivent Builds with

Habitat for Humanity on Saturday, May 12. No experience is

required; you just need to be 16 or older. Since the Build dates

are March 31 – May 19, we’ll probably be doing finishing

work like landscaping and painting. We’d love to have tons of

people there including our youth. And please invite your fam-

ily and friends to join us too. This home is being built for the

Diaz family by Austin-area Lutheran churches. Because so

many churches and crews are involved, we need to give the

folks at Thrivent a preliminary head-count in a couple weeks.

Please contact Rex Schroeder ([email protected]) or

Deb Grunska ([email protected]) as soon as possible if you

can help.

HOLY OPEN GOLF TOURNAMENT

The Almost Annual Lord of Life “Holy Open” Golf

Tournament will be held on Sunday, April 29 at Avery Ranch

Golf Club. The entry fee is $55.00, which includes green fees,

cart and range balls. We will be grilling under the big tree

after the late service for golfers, friends and family, followed

by a 1:30 Shotgun Start. The sign-up sheet is in the Koinonia

Café. For more information, contact Rex Schroeder at

228-6365 or [email protected].

BBQ & BAKE SALE

It’s time to dust off our smokers!! The BBQ & Bake Sale is

set for April 21st from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sign-up sheets

are in the Café for briskets, baked goods, drinks, chips, and

much more! We would also accept cash donations to help

purchase briskets & sausages. We need several people to help

smoke the briskets. Last year we smoked 15 briskets and

grilled 150 sausages and sold all of them!!! Everyone

loves our BBQ & Baked Goods! Come join in the fun by

volunteering! There will be two shifts again this year! Any

questions, please contact Deanna Brown or Diane Saegert.

GLOBAL INITIATIVES

www.elca.org/global-links Through the benevolence we pay to the

ELCA we are supporting these global initiatives. A link is now

available on the “For Members” page of our website, so you

can keep up-to-date on what the ELCA is doing to reach the

world for Christ.

BOOK CLUB

Tuesday, April 10th, we will begin The First Paul by Marcus

Borg and Dominic Crossan. Here is a quote from the Library

Journal:

In this scholarly and engaging account, Paul is situated

firmly in his first-century context and portrayed against the

backdrop of history as a revolutionary figure who chose the

way of Jesus as a countercultural alternative over the way of

the Roman empire. This well-researched and highly readable

account is recommended for all students of Paul as well as

interested readers.

The reading group meets every Tuesday for an hour starting

at 7:15 p.m. If you are interested in participating or just have

questions, call Olga at 255-5197

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY

The Prayer Shawl Ministry is going strong and four people

have received these special prayer shawls and blankets.

On Sunday, March 25th, Pastor Watt blessed the completed

prayer shawls and blankets during both early and late

services. As the prayer shawls and comfort quilts are made,

the crafters pray for healing, comfort, strength and peace.

The persons who will receive the shawl or quilt will be blessed

with these prayers intertwined with materials used in making

their shawl or blanket. If you feel there is someone in your

life that has a need from this ministry, please let Pastor Watt

know. If you are interested in joining this ministry, please

contact Deb Grunksa or Deanna Brown.
