But over the last few years i haven’t done too many car models. Not because I don’t like them, I just like to build things I see every day. That’s why military aircraft, armor and sci-fi appeal so much to me. It’s the stuff I don’t see everyday that really holds my attention. I guess that’s why — when I do build autos — I don’t really build much of the “factory-stock” subjects. So I lean towards the exotics, race cars and the rarer automotive subjects. But I have found out something very interesting about myself the last few months. When I do build something from outside of my comfort zone I can let go a little and really have fun with a new subject. That being said I am looking forward to building a Ferrari F60 and a Lexus LFA this weekend. We’ll see how well I do but I really don’t care if they are contest worthy or not. Since they are relatively new subjects for me I’m just looking forward to having a little fun with them. Not to mention i get to make something clean and shiny! Well that’s it for this month. I’ll see you at the meeting and keep on modeling until then.

Looks like the busy time of year is upon us here at the IPMSOC. There are lots of events coming up that hold special interest to various enthusiasts as well as we modelers.

Next month on May 5-6 the annual Chino Airshow will be held. Once again I will be at that event, (this time as an air-freak) all the while tending our club booth and trying to educate people on the joys of building plastic models. In late May the Fresno IPMS will be hosting it’s contest at the Castle Air Museum in central California. This is a good opportunity for aircraft researchers as it will be open cockpit day at the museum during that show. Then there are two more shows in June, San Diego and Ontario respectively. Along with those, the club e-board is working diligently on new programs and demos for the upcoming months.

Also in the works is OrangeCon! While the categories have been set and the fliers have been made there is still a lot of work to be done. The biggest is the award making. But we will also need to have trophy sponsorships sold, raffle donations hunted and gathered, as well as letters and announcements mailed out. If any of this sounds like something you would like to get involved with please contact myself or any other e-board member.

The e-board is also working on some kind of club road-trip opportunity. We have some ideas but nothing we are ready to announce just yet. We will keep you posted once we have gathered all the info for this.

As I am preparing for the Long Beach Grand Prix this weekend I was asked to do some model-building demos at the show and in addition to that I was asked to work on some car models. I am not opposed to building car models at all, in fact I have completed quite a few over the years not to mention the hordes of them that are half built in my closet.

The Importance of Membershipipmsusa.org. Complete it and return it to the address on the form.

IPMS Orange County membership is gained by completing one of our membership forms (available at the meetings or on our web site at www.ipmsoc.org) and returning it to us in person or by mail with your dues.

As part of the participation we wish to encourage, all members should feel free to submit articles, kit reviews, humor and anything else that you think might be appropriate for this publication.

Membership is of importance, both here at the level of the local chapter as well as at the National level.

Our club is one of 220 plus local chapters of our parent organization, IPMS USA. As a long time member of the National, I can highly recommend the expenditure of the additional dollars to become a member of the National. With membership comes, among other things, six copies of the IPMS Journal and the right to participate at the IPMS Nationals. The subscription to the Journal alone is worth the modest cost of joining. A copy of the membership application is below or available on our web site or at www.

Contest Results - March 2012

This month’s theme is “April Fools Day” A perennial favourite, anything silly or amusing, if it brings a smile to the face it qualifies.

Next Months Theme is “Speed” Any subject that was designed or built pri-marily for speed at the expense of all

other factors, or held an all time speed record at some time. Race cars yes, factory sports cars no, because they sacrifice speed at the expense of having things like a passenger seat. Models of Sandra Bullock, or a plank of wood rep-resenting Keanu Reeves will be eligible.

Call for Demonstration Programs

We wanted to let the membership know that we are really trying to increase the number of demonstration, skill and technique, type of presentations we offer at the meetings.

As a result, we would really like to ask each member to give some thought to topics they would like to see covered in a demonstration. Naturally, we are also looking for members to be willing to make a demonstration on an aspect of model building they feel they comfortable with doing.

Demonstrations can be either short (say 15 to 20 minutes) like we use during our “Round Robin” demonstration nights – or – the can be more detailed and comprehensive with time up to 60 minutes being avalable for in depth discussions and demonstrations of complex skills or techniques.

Think about things you know. Then think about things you would really like to know, or be better at it.

Members are invited to speak to Sean Fallesen about both ideas and/or their willingness to do the demos. The more input we get, the better the Executive Board can work to address the needs and interests of the club as a whole.

IPMS/OC Contest Themes For 2012By Leigh Eaton

January 20th

TwinsAny Subject where two of something is the predominant or unusual feature. So bi-planes, motorcycles, two seater cars, twin gunned A.F.V.s, twin boomed aircraft, two masted ships. But twin engine aircraft don’t qualify.

February 17th

Leap of FaithAs 2012 is a Leap year we’ll bring this one back from it’s hiatus, any experimental, prototype or one of a kind subject. Had to have existed in the real world so no outrageous drawing board ideas.

March 16th

Oscar NightOK so the Oscars are at the end of February in 2012 but bear with us on this one. Any subject that was recognizably featured in a Movie or T.V. show. “Black Bess” from Green Hornet, Millennium Falcon, Kojak’s Buick, Thunderbird Two, the pink sub from Operation Petticoat etc. You get the idea. Though the Audi from the “Ronin” car chase counts, some vague Renault that got smashed up on the freeway doesn’t, neither do generic Spitfires from the “Battle Of Britain”, although Avias pretending to be Bf 109’s would. Triples points will be awarded if someone brings in the Chariot from “Ben-Hur” with the Fiat 500 in the background.

April 20th

April Fools DayA perennial favourite, anything silly or amusing, if it brings a smile to the face it qualifies.

May 16th

SpeedAny subject that was designed or built primarily for speed at the expense of all other factors, or held an all time speed record at some time. Race cars yes, factory sports cars no, because they sacrifice speed at the expense of having things like a passenger seat. Models or Sandra Bullock, or a plank of wood representing Keanu Reeves will be eligible.

June 15th

From Midway Onwards 1942

Celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the turning point in the Pacific war, any subject from the 1942 U.S. victories in that theatre, Midway and Guadalcanal etc.

July 20th

Colonials vs. The CrownSeeing as July celebrates “Colonial insurrection day” as I like to call it, thought we could fight the War of Independence all over again. So build any American or British tooled subject, Revell, Monogram, AMT, Aurora, Airfix, Frog, Matchbox etc. Revell of Germany does not qualify except for their Matchbox re-issues. Bring instructions or box top.

August 17th

Inaccurate MiniaturesHypothetical, What if, Kit bash or outrageous drawing board ideas. As simple as an R.A.F. scheme on an F-8 Crusader, or as complicated as putting swept wings and jets on a B-17. Must be plausible in the real world so no warp drive reactors or dilithium crystals. Extra consideration will be given if you include a back story.

September 21st

Legends of the FallAny subject named after a real or mythical legendary subject. Achilles, Hercules, Diablo, El Dorado, Bigfoot, Abrams, Stuart, Nimitz, etc. Manufacturer or designer names such as Shelby Messerschmitt, Northrop, Ferrari etc. do not qualify.

October 19th

Fall Into DisrepairAny subject that is broken down, beaten up, or obviously undergoing repairs. Rusted out cars, sunken ships burnt out tanks and the like. The more rust the better!

November 16th

Bling BlingAny thing uniquely customized or modified on the exterior, either for show or for function. Hot Rods and Custom cars, Aircraft display teams, special livery Airliners, suits of armour, one off paint jobs, uniquely field modified A.F.V.s.

December 14th(Note 2nd Friday of Month)

Small NationsAny subject either manufactured or in the service of a small nation. U.S.A., Russia, U.K. and Commonwealth, China, Italy and Japan excluded.

January 18th 2013

Size Doesn’t MatterAnything 1/72nd scale or smaller.

Membership Renewal It is time to renew your member to IPMS Orange County. To make this easier we have a copy of the member-ship application on the following page. You may either complete a paper copy and either mail it or you can bring it to the next meeting. We will also have applications at the meeting.

If you have already done so, and some of you have, thank you. If you have yet to do it, please do so as soon as possible.

We have been able to remain at the same cost of membership again this year. This is largely due to the efforts of our Treasurer to keep the monthy expense for our meeting place the same as before.

By renewing in a timely manner, you will continue to receive our award-winning newsletter each month. Having gone all-electronic, we are no longer limited to the 8 pages we had when the newsletter was printed on paper. In the past year, the newsletter averaged more the 17 pages per month.

This is your club…continue to play an active role!

Call For Newsletter ContributionsBy Newsletter Staff

As the IPMS/OC Newsletter begins it’s 20th year of publication, the Editorial Staff is making a concerted effort to increase the size and quality of the newsletter. To that end, we are in search of contributions of any kind (well, almost any kind!) for publication.

We are interested in receiving:

Hints and Tips

Kit Reviews

Historical Articles

Humor About Modeling

Cartoons About Modeling

How-To Articles

Technique Articles

Reports On Contests

Reports On Visits To Museums

Photo Essays or Walk-Arounds

Contributions may be of any length, either with or without graphics, photos or drawings. They can in any form, hand written, typed, Word docs or even scrawled on the back of a bar napkin. What ever it is, contact the Editor and he will happily make it work.

We do ask that, if you are including photos in your aticle, please do not embed them in the word document. It is prefered that you simply make a notation (<Photo 1>) in the text and then include the picture file as a seperate item. This greatly simplifies the layingout of the article.

Though we are looking for items on all topics, we would particularly like to see articles on Armor, Figures, Sci-Fi and Automotive subjects.

So what if you are reading this and think that you are not up to doing an article, how about just letting the Editor know what you would like to see in future issues, because we are also looking for ideas on how to improve the newsletter.

The more input we get from the membership, the better we can make this publication …and the less often you will see this call for contributions.

April’s Program - Techniques DemonstratedBy Sean Fallesen

Last month’s inaugural “Basics and Beyond” segment was, I feel, a success. Our armor panelists Leigh Eaton and Mike Budzeika, and aircraft panelists Brian Casteel and Mark Glidden, provided a wealth of insight and advice on the topics raised. I learned much from them, including several concepts I’d never even considered (adding weights inside a tank to make it sit “heavy” on its tracks, and splicing together two sliding squares into a U-shape for track alignment on both sides of a tank at once rate high on this scale).

Following up on the panel, we’ve settled on four subjects to be demonstrated during the April meeting in our round robin format. Each brief presentation will be performed four times, allowing everyone to cycle around and see all four if they wish. Our topics and presenters are:

• Sanding and Polishing Canopies, by Brian Casteel

• Decal Techniques, by Steve Munroe

• Seam Filling, by Mark Glidden

• Track Jig and Assembly, by Leigh Eaton

It’s a good night to bring visitors, with techniques on display. Better still, as we will be holding a kit raffle. Hope to see you all there!

IPMS Orange County on FacebookBy Staff Contribution

We want to bring the attention of the membership that there is a new way to be in contact with the chapter and your fellow modelers. IPMS Orange County has it’s own Facebook (www.facebook.com) page.

The IPMS/OC Facebook page is now up to 264 Fans, from all over the country as well as a number of foreign countries

We are posting content from past newsletters, photos of the monthly meetings and contests as well as listing different model related events here in Southern California.

Facebook is a social media site that allows individuals and organizations (such as IPMS OC) to communicate, on an open forum, with friends and fans.

In practical terms, this is a means of giving updates to the membership and

others of news and events of interest to our club. It will also allow you to communicate with other modelers. This includes showing your models, asking questions, and giving answers and other things. The only thing off limits is advertising things for sale or to market model building services.

If you have your own Facebook page, do a search on “International Plastic Modelers Society”, one of the items that will come up is IPMS OC’s page.

If you click the button labeled, “Like” you will automatically receive the updates as they are posted. You will also be able to post questions, make comments, and follow the discussions of others.

One thing to keep in mind about Facebook, and all other social media sites, is that everything you say, or post, on that site is visible to the public. So

don’t say anything you don’t want others to see or know.

The IPMS OC Facebook page is not a replacement for either this newsletter or for our web site (www.ipmsoc.org) but is simply another, easy and quick, means of communicating amongst ourselves.

Other clubs and companies (Airfix, Revell, Dragon, etc) have pages as well which allow you to keep up with what they are doing.
